I was able to hear a detailed explanation of the drone mapping business! I am now 66 years old, and after retirement as a civil servant in Korea, I started flying drones as a hobby, and after learning 'Premier Pro' for video editing, I am uploading drone videos on UA-cam, and three years ago I qualified as a drone instructor After acquiring it, I give lectures at drone flight academies, and I also work on pest control with agricultural drones. In the meantime, an acquaintance asked if I could make a map of agricultural land, so I watched your UA-cam video to learn how to use Pix4D capture and Drone Deploy, and I learned a lot from your lecture! I will be visiting your channel often to learn more in the future, and I also learned something very useful from this video. Your lecture was the best!
Hello I would like to say, thank you very much and I really enjoyed your video. I've always was interested in mapping and just really didn't know how to break into the market. But you helped me alot. Again thank you.
Great video! Getting my Part 107 in a few weeks and looking to focus on drone mapping. Hope to see more videos on how you got to where you are and the different aspects of the job other then just make a plan, fly it, then upload.
That’s exiting, welcome to the industry! I’ll see how I can integrate how to get jobs and proven methods to get clients with mapping hopefully later this year!
You can't do accurate drone mapping without a surveyor or photogrammetrist all you can do is, sell fancy 3D maps that have no "claimed" spatial accuracy. Its not as simple as buy a drone, fly drone get clients.
That’s not entirely true. You can still capture using an RTK drone or processing using PPK methods. It’ll be cheaper yes, accurate yes, but obviously can’t pass it off as a “drone survey”. I have several clients that pay for us to run mapping missions that aren’t geo-referenced with survey grade accuracy. They only care about relative accuracy as they are using it for visual inspections. But again it’s the client that you are selling your services to and what they are looking for. I do disagree with the “you can’t do accurate mapping” statement though because it’s been proven to not be 100% true. I still see your point though. Just my experience!
@@DylanGorman If you can't certify it to be willing to spend millions of dollars to design off of it, then it's not accurate. Can it be close, sure. Accurate.... mmm well no. So again I wouldn't advertise that. Still good video though!
Dylan, Thank you for taking the time to make this beautiful and explanatory video for everyone. I already took a complete mapping course with a drone 3 years ago and only now will I be able to start with this activity. I'm here in South Florida and I don't have the slightest idea of the base amount I can charge future clients, to carry out mapping, with photogrammetry and 3D information..... Can you help me with this and tell me where I can get it? This cost reference and what can I charge customers? I know it varies from region to region, but I don't want to charge anything below what the market charges. I am already an experienced drone pilot and know how to do mapping.
Its a very complex answer that differs for all of our clients that we bring on. I always ask them about what problems they are currently facing with property management, asset management or project development management. I then build a drone based solution around it to cater to their needs. I know I make it sound simple but it really just finding the right client that will say yes, believe me I have had more no's than I have had yes.
Hi Dylan, Great Video thank you. Would you recomend "Cold calling" some folks? What I mean is if I were to fly say a New Development, Shopping Center, etc. ( I do know some people in Real estate) . It’s funny that you say that. I really need to set up another account specially for drone work. Unfortunately a lot of the work I do I cannot show publicly. I’ll see what I can do though as I know people have asked in the past about one!

Dylan, with a small property like this do you ever feel the need to run a separate flight at a different gimbal angle in order to capture better 3D details? I've been experimenting and have been seeing that I have seen some better results doing a flight at -30 degrees but you need to expand the flight path as it can't see the property at the close proximity. Maybe I'm doing something wrong and you can offer some suggestions for achieving the best 3D results. Thanks and love the videos!
I do photogrammetric mapping of forestry areas. I'll do 5 passes if an area is particularly complex - one nadir (top town), and 4 passes with the camera at a 30-45 degree oblique angel from the cardinal directions. However my work isn't making me nearly that much money -- I'm paid a flat salary and the photogrammetry data is ONLY used to plot spray drone flight routes - what the company is paid for is the sprayed acerage.

Thanks Dylan, this looks very good, I’m on the edge of getting a drone to help create site plans. I don’t need accurate georeferencing but I do need to be able to pull accurate measurements from my drone map/model. I’m trying to figure out if I’d need GCP’s, I really don’t want to take that extra step yet. Can you take fairly accurate measurements from your drone map without GCP’s? I really appreciate your videos and responses. Thanks Dylan
I've had a Mavic 2 Pro over 3yrs now and I only thought my drone's purpose was for amazing Photos and Videos...only today I learned about Drone Mapping...and the very last few seconds I now seen that a 360 degree camera could be used with the Drone. I have had the Samsung 360 camera well over 6yrs and it has barely been used...I recently brought high capacity memory cards on sale back in 2021....so lets say if I really wanted to produce the top quality mapping...Could I implement my phone with a DJI Gimbal, my 360 degree camera and my Mavic 2 Pro? My Mavic 2 Pro has been used mostly in the car scene in very low light at night. I found a purpose for what I have been gathering all these years? Growing up I always told myself I loved reading maps. It'll be cool to show people that I can create a 3-D map of their house and property!
How does the 'customer' view the final models? Do they have to go into DD to view, or can the models be sent to the customer for viewing on some other image viewer?
hello i tried to use drone deploy for making a 3d model but when i connect first to my dji go app it doesn't connect with the drone deploy app , please help me
It depends on the project. Most of what we do is for property inspection (cracks in pavement, trash on site, water buildup on rooftops). If we do anything with earthworks then we do use GCP’s!
Very cool! Would using a camera with a LiDAR sensor to map be preferable? Or does matter really matter? In my work I’m already using my own utility application to access my iPhone 13 pros LiDAR sensor to scan the interior of residential property for accurate square footage measurements and I use my drone to get exterior pics that you can’t get from the ground . That’s a nice database. Would LiDAR be better?
I really like your videos! Its hard to believe you have been in the industry for 9 years, you look no older than 25... maybe you are much older and have the gift of looking youthful! Keep up the great educational videos!
Awesome vid. My sons band is Dylan too so awesome name as well! You mentioned having contacts in the industry. What if someone doesn’t have contacts in the industry? In my industry I’m talking about agriculture. I am a actual pilot so I have Contacts in the aviation industry but generally speaking pilots don’t want to talk to anybody who even admits to having a drone license. I really like the idea of being able to help farmers monitor their crops. How do you suggest I go market myself to farmers when I don’t know any and I know nothing about farming ?
So I picked up a DJI Mini 2. Would this drone work to learn using this software? I picked it up cheap to see if this is something we can survey small properties. Thanks!
Pix4d is another option but they arent as affordable as drone deploy and they have a bunch of add-ons that you would need to purchase in order to get the same data deliverables. Drone Deploy also offers other tools outside of 2d/3d maps, but as a single contractor I can see how $1000 a year is a bit steep. My first project with a client paid for the first full year of it and every project after was profit/ savings for next years annual purchase.

interesting business. $500 a month is a lot to pay but I can see the benefits there, would you say it's better to just jump right in and pay for it first and then look for clients, or the other way around?
When I first started using Drone Deploy it was $150 a month but they have gone way beyond that now. I’d say first starting out find some free or cheap tools to use to first learn about it and then branch off from there.
Is mini pro 4 good for stuff like this; iknow it doesnt have sdk support as yet but it does have the waypoint feature that i think can be used until yk 3rd party support
I almost bought it but luckily I went to see Google Play reviews first... Reviewers say Android App is useless. Some even say that it's dangerous to use! Doesn't support some drone models as iOS app does. As I've understood, whole service is useless without app? If you've got any contact with them, let them know they need to fix this if they want to charge it 500$ per month!

Whatever the max amount that you can spend is the drone that I recommend!
What kind of drone licensing/certification do I need? Part 107?
Yes part 107!
Is the DJI air 2S supported? And when will your course launch? Much appreciated!
Was the 3D model in this video done without GCP’s?
If so I’m very impressed and very interested in getting into this.
It’s was not done with GCP’s but you can easily create a model with one!
You can for reference but if it’s for any survey work or engineers you will need to use GCP’s for that data to be accurate!
@@DylanGorman you will also need a survey license to be able to sell that data at that point.
@@tommyb9746 Correct, or if a survey company hires you to capture the data you can go that route as well! It's what we do almost all the time.
You can do the 3D model just by using the drone camera (Sfm - Structure From Motion).
The enterprise DJI's has a controller that does what your iPad does, so hope it works on those drones.
How does the 'customer' view the final models? Do they have to go into DD to view, or can the models be sent to the customer for viewing on some other image viewer?
you know he's super legit with his work when he gets new truck and new macbook pro! great content.
Haha thank you!
hello i tried to use drone deploy for making a 3d model but when i connect first to my dji go app it doesn't connect with the drone deploy app , please help me
Are you typically not using GCP’s for accuracy of the mapping?
It depends on the project. Most of what we do is for property inspection (cracks in pavement, trash on site, water buildup on rooftops). If we do anything with earthworks then we do use GCP’s!
Clients that want to pay next to nothing for work these days. Makes it hard to afford high priced drone deploy.
Hey Dylan, this is good but it doesn’t show how you get clients which is really the most important thing
Keep up the great educational videos!
i have dji mavic zoom , only 12 mp can you use this drone for drone mapping ?
Awesome vid. My sons band is Dylan too so awesome name as well! You mentioned having contacts in the industry. What if someone doesn’t have contacts in the industry? In my industry I’m talking about agriculture. I am a actual pilot so I have Contacts in the aviation industry but generally speaking pilots don’t want to talk to anybody who even admits to having a drone license. I really like the idea of being able to help farmers monitor their crops. How do you suggest I go market myself to farmers when I don’t know any and I know nothing about farming ?
Great question! Schedule a call with me as id love to discuss this with you: calendly.com/dylangorman-pb/20minfree
Drone Deploy supports the Air 2, but what about the Air 2s?
The current free trial DroneDeploy period is only 14 days.
So I picked up a DJI Mini 2. Would this drone work to learn using this software? I picked it up cheap to see if this is something we can survey small properties. Thanks!
Mini 2 unfortunately does not work with Drone Deploy. The GPS in the mini 2 also isn’t usable for survey grade accuracy (unless you tie it to GCP’s)
hi does drone deploy support the air 2s as well?? it only states the air 2 only on the website?
Currently no, just the air 2 currently.
Thanks a lot! One thing I can`t quite get is do you set camera angle manually when u launch the route or the drone would know? Thanks again!
It’s all done automatically in Drone Deploy, super easy!
@@DylanGorman Figured it out today, works like charm, thank you!
Glad to hear!
$1000 a year per user for 2d and 3d maps is a little steep for someone starting out. Any other affordable options for 2d/3d mapping?
Pix4d is another option but they arent as affordable as drone deploy and they have a bunch of add-ons that you would need to purchase in order to get the same data deliverables.
Drone Deploy also offers other tools outside of 2d/3d maps, but as a single contractor I can see how $1000 a year is a bit steep. My first project with a client paid for the first full year of it and every project after was profit/ savings for next years annual purchase.
1200 a year is just 2D. 3600 for 2D/3D it seems. Cool idea but difficult to get started without massive commitment.
@@Marc-io6pv I agree with you on that, for me cost is justified but just starting out there are other more cost effective solutions.
@@DylanGorman Yeah it's still interesting and like anything else you have to speculate to accumulate, there's the month only subscriptions I guess. Just looking into it in the UK & alot are established surveyors with all the kit, knowledge & accreditations. So we're aiming for the lower end of the market... which is? Good video idea about the why's rather than the how to's maybe. cheers man :)
Look into reality capture
i live in belgium how can i find drone deploy missions for my country ?
I have a Dji mini pro 3. It's not listed as a compatible drone but do you think it will be since its relatively new? Or should I buy another drone?
That drone wont work, however if you want the best beginner drone (and probably the best drone for the cost) to start flying stuff like this I would recommend the DJI Air 2s (amzn.to/3Q1soQj)
interesting business.
You can take a lot of the same concepts and use it with the mini 4
I almost bought it but luckily I went to see Google Play reviews first... Reviewers say Android App is useless. Some even say that it's dangerous to use! Doesn't support some drone models as iOS app does. As I've understood, whole service is useless without app?
If you've got any contact with them, let them know they need to fix this if they want to charge it 500$ per month!
It works best on IOS devices, especially the newer models. It may be a thing with Android that doesn't allow for best compatibility, im not 100% sure
Great vid. Can you do this with a mavic 2?
Yes! Drone Deploy's website also has a list of compatible drones as well!
Hey I sent Matt an email because I got the 2 weeks trial before seeing this and have 9 days left, have you had issues with not being able to continue flights for 2D or 3D mapping after swapping batteries? I fly the Mavic Air 2, any help would be great. Thank you.
The battery thing that you are talking about has happened a few times to me. It's fixable I just don't remember how I did it. Drone Deploy also has great support to get problems like that fixed! I'll see If I can reach out to Matt for you!
@@DylanGorman I just resolved it yesterday. Just had to close the app and restart it and it worked fine. Hopefully he can at least extend my trial for now. Great videos keep it up.
I also haven’t received an email reply from your connection yet and my trial only has 7-8 days left, maybe you could ask him to check his messages specifically from people seeing this video it would be much appreciated ✌🏽
I’ll see what I can do! I apologize for the delayed response from him, he’s usually pretty good at getting back to people!
@@DylanGorman it’s all good 🔥
Can we do it professionally with Mavic Air 2s?
Yes
Tried the free trial, couldn’t get the drone to run the mission
Will a DJI air 2s do the mapping as good if not better than the mavic 2 pro? Thanks!
They should be about the same, I’ve got a video coming out next week about it.
That's funny! I work at ID Plans too! Been flying for a while and wanted to get into the ortho side of things.
Hey Chris! Mention this to your regional manager and I can get you through the right channels to set up a call with my team to potentially get you on some of the jobs!
I have a Drone Business How would you recommend I get clients for drone mapping? Are there any companies that will hire some pilots for mapping so that I can practice? Thank you man
I’d look into your local area and see what kinds of companies are working there that could benefit from mapping. I’d then give them a few free samples so that they can see first hand how it can help them out. Do that a few times and start building local clients, it doesn’t matter what industry it is in, you just have to put yourself out there and show your value!
Nice this video is sweet. Where do you apply for waivers and what waivers are there and what's permissions procedure?
I appreciate it! There is a simple way now called LANNC. its a one click waiver to fly in controlled airspace!
Why would you choose the inspire 2 over the phantom pro 4 v2? I have the opirtunity to purchase either.
P4P V2 is what I’d choose. Only reason I used the inspire 2 was because I had certain projects that leveraged the better camera image.
Could you take pictures from the side of the buildings to eliminate the distortion?
Absolutely! They have a feature called “facade” mode made specifically for that!
@@DylanGorman Wow, great channel and super quick response! Thanks for the reply. I'm looking forward to learning more and watching your business succeed :D
I appreciate it! Working on more cool videos soon!
Great videos ! Could I use for farm mapping on farms around the size of 500 Acres with drone deploy ?
Yes, absolutely! It will just be a lot of data haha!
how does your clients contact you ? do you have a website?
This looks like fun to do. Once I get my 107. I'll offer free Drone Mapping to the first few clients. So I can get some practice in and then scale from there. Thanks for showing and making this video.
Thanks for all the great tips! You rock Dylan!
Thanks for watching!
Is a surveyor license required to start a drone mapping business, legally?
Depends on your state and the services you intend on providing
Thanks for the video. Very interesting and useful. Liked and subbed...
Thanks for the sub!
Great video. How do you maintain line of sight when the drone is flying on the other side of a building, without having to walk around it?
With the drone being 160-200ft in the air you’ll be able to maintain VLOS without any issues
Park further away.
Dylan, thanks for the great video! What use cases do you see for environmental work, potentially?
TONS! Erosion control, land assessment, vegetation management, species monitoring. The list goes on
Hi Dylan.Thank you for this informative video. I'm thinking of buying my very first drone, DJI Mini 3 Pro, for travel. But then I saw your video on "Top 5 tips to get Paying clients.." and this video. Now, is it possible I can start drone mapping with DJI mini 3 pro for now, and when I get a couple of paying clients, I can get a the Mavic 3?
Where is Drone Deploy based out of?
Is this a Chinese company?
San Francisco, California
Can a drone map the inside of large empty warehouse?
Thank you
I’m sure it’s been done, I haven’t yet attempted it!
I am going to try and follow you advice, as it has always kinda been my dream to fly drones, ever since I was a kid, I have always enjoyed flying RC aircraft, but now days I don’t do that too often, and this way would be a good way to get back into it.
Looking forward to have you here for your journey! I’ve got more videos in the works!
Awesome information!! thanks 🙏
Glad it helped!
Guys is this model viable in Greece?
You didn't film it doing the actual mapping???
Bro...
Why is does that matter? It’s just the drone flying back and forth in the sky in a grid. Nothing exciting to look.
Is this the same as 3d modelling a building through drone pictures?
Basically yes!
Are you hiring drone pilots ? Located in Kansas City, MO with a 107 cert. Also a Commerically rated Single Engine and Multi Engine pilot with extensive knowledge of aviation. Would love to join your team of drone pilots.
Thank you Dylan amazing informative video. Are you able to make a lengthy video on how new drone pilots can market themselves in order to gain new client within a certain time frame like 3 months or 6 months.
Like a step by step walk through of how you marketed yourself when you first started in order to gain new clients.
