    Ive been doing everything on a 1965 Tamron 400mm f6.9 adapted to an A6000. No IBIS, No AF. It was a long and hard road but Im so used to it now, its second nature. It will be heaven for the day I upgrade to the 21st century!

      But you’ve developed some skill that modern photographers lack because they’re too spoiled with technology. Brandon stated that 8 fps is ok for your grandmothers birthday party but not for wildlife photography is a bunch of donkey dung! Although my Sony a7iii only shoots 10 FPS it blows nearly every camera off the planet for low light, which many photographers shoot in. I’ve had the a6000, as well as plenty of Sony cameras and the a6000 takes some really great bird pictures, even with the 55-210mm kit lens.

      @@nwyetiphotography yes I agree with all points. I had surrounded myself with photographers this year and they all told me after seeing my photos that if I really want autofocus, go ahead but I really don't need it. I was grateful to hear that compliment. Also, I stopped using the motor drive and just flick the shutter fast if I need to know. I noticed the 6000 "hangs up" sometimes. It's annoying. However, I don't really bother taking loads of frames if I know exactly what I want, I can get it in less frames. Even moving subjects, tracking fast flying birds across a scene.

    I'm in your shoes. I don't have the resources for the newest and supposedly greatest. I I've been doing photography for over 50 years. Some professionally but mostly not. I say enjoy the shots you get. I've done the slr film and have been doing digital since 08. I use a Canon rebel xs and t7. I have a Canon 75 300 4 that quite old. It was given to me and it was from a rebel slr. You can still get this lens new for 200. For me it is patience and learning all you can and enjoy what you have. Something higher would be nice but unlikely for me im just having fun with what I have. Great video. Keep it up.

    I would think anything over 12 FPS is just more work in post.
    Also when you say expensive in lens world, I was thinking like 3k-5k. Wow, 11k-12k is freaking expensive.
    The "EOS R" vs the Sony a9 on paper I don't see a huge difference. But I also know that on paper is well "on paper".
    So, at this point you had me drawn in pretty good, great way to setup the issue.
    I will say the "Camera A vs Camera B" comparison was pretty easy due to knowing your buddy is shooting with a fast telephoto prime. The DOF or Bokeh is stronger on those pics, so I was 90% correct with that info in hand.
    The editing part for me was super helpful, not just for wildlife photos but editing in general.
    Great video and for that you have a sub from me. Thanks!!!

    I bought a second hand Nikon D850 last year and use the Sigma 60-600mm. Also bought the 1.4x TC, but rarely use it because the image looks way softer and less sharp with the TC aswell.
    If i would get a chance to get a hold of the Nikon 600mm f4 for a good price i would get it. But for now really happy with the gear i've got and still got to learn so much with this gear.

    I have the Canon r6 and my biggest lens is a very used tamron 70-200 2.8. The best I can get with that lens is hummingbirds. They animal eye af is awesome I must say. But I need a bigger Focal Length for wildlife. But the camera does amazing.

  • @bernhardkoster2329
    @bernhardkoster2329 2 роки тому +1

    I have to disagree on one point. Patience is only the second important bit when shooting wildlife. Know your subjects and how they behave. Who knows that most birds poop before they fly? You can use this for timing to catch the bird in flight rather than on a branch in a tree. You don't need 20+ pfs if you know your subjects but all the rest is pretty much spot on.
    Being a disabled wildlife photographer brings its own set of challenges on top as I can't just walk wherever I want so I have to plan ahead for pretty much every shoot and where on my mobility scooter to put my equipment so that I can take shots without having to get to my rear top-box etc.
    I just managed to get myself a Canon D1 Mark 4 after 45 years of Pentax and the first thing I did was to blackened the white Canon writing on the camera. This makes quite a bit of a difference as there is less reflection when rising the camera. For lenses one can get camo sleeves but you can't get that for a camera (or at least I have never seen one so far).
    Anyway, great video and very useful tips. Now subscribed 👍

    I really feel your pain. My first full frame camera was the Canon EOS R. I actually sold it because I got in the bird photography about 4 years ago and bought the Canon R5 .. now I have the Canon R7 as a backup. But I really hated using that camera and then when my wife got in the photography I bought her the Canon RP and she immediately got into bird photography following me around. I knew her limitations because of previously having the Canon EOS R.. so I broke down and bought her the Canon R8 which actually gets 40 frames per second in electronic shutter. She doesn't have all the banding the the Canon R7 has. The Canon R8 retails for about the same price as the R.. and the autofocus is phenomenal. It has the same auto focus that the R6 Mark II has. It just doesn't have the image stabilization in the body and the toggle switch. But I basically set her up with manual and auto ISO and she just runs and guns with that with the RF 100 to 400 lens. It's super late, super fast, and she is super super happy! As long as she doesn't want to borrow my 500 F4 I'm happy. Hahaha.....

    Coming from someone shooting wildlife with a potato, I’m jealous of your cheese sammich (and honestly had no clue Prime Rib equipment was so salty...😬🥺). I’m using a Canon 70D and just picked up a used 70-200 f4, previously using a 55-250 f2.8 (I think), editing is done with the native apple photo software though a friend has recently gotten into photoshop and edits my photos for free so he can practice (having friends is cool). I’ve had the camera for several years but only recently really started getting serious, so I really appreciate the “middle of the road” perspective as most people seem to forget not everyone has a Prime Rib.

    I gotta say you did a pretty good job trying to make as close as possible.
    The bokeh is still a bit more pleasant on the other image taken with the expensive setup, far less uneasy, in my opinion. But something about the branch on the expensive setup I did not like as much, and actually preferred your image slightly in how the branch was rendered.
    Then again, your setup isn’t that crappy, is it? I mean, it is not a mobile camera. If it were, no amount of editing could get it even close to the expensive setup.
    But ultimately, this is about making wildlife photography available even to people who cannot afford the optimal setup, which will be prohibitively expensive to a lot (if not most) people. And a cost hard to justify for many more.
    In that spirit, your video did a good job.

    Hi! I just stumbled on your channel, and I look forward to digging through your videos!
    I'm looking for some advice: I am doing a safari to Uganda (traditional safari/gorilla trekking) Jan 2024. I have always wanted to get into photography and purchased a Canon EOS Rebel T7i as a graduation gift to myself years ago. I still haven't had the determination to sit with it and learn my way around the thing; all that to say that my goal for 2023 is to begin my photography journey in the hopes of being decently prepared to collect a few good shots of wildlife while on my first international trip (can't really find a better reason to begin a shelved passion project).
    What lens should I purchase for the trip? Any misc. equipment would you recommend? I plan to get into wildlife photography on the home front as well, so I want something I can grow with since I am an absolute beginner who is also always in need of more funds to make all her dreams come true. I may be in a dilemma. I want to upgrade my body in the future (leaning towards Sony), but I need to put the work in on my T7i before I invest any further to make sure this is a passion I'll be willing to go broke for. 😅
      As for lenses, I'm considering renting a telephoto lens for the Africa trip (I don't want to commit to Canon at this point, so I don't want to invest too much in the way of Canon lenses). I do have a trip to Glacier this year as well and would like to capture wildlife, landscapes, general trip documentation, a few videos and pictures of friends, the same things I would be interested in doing while in Africa. Thanks for the low lighting tips, something I'll have to figure out, especially on safari!
      Are there any lenses you recommend that can be used both on Canon and Sony? I am willing to invest 2-3k in lenses at this point but would want to have the ability to use the lenses in the future.

      @@Jay-es1gn There are several adaptors that can be used that will allow you to use Sony lenses on Canon cameras. For the most part, adapters work ok but sometimes it will be at the cost of fast/accurate autofocus. Mating cameras with their native counterparts will always yield the best results. I would suggest adapting a Sony lens to the canon if you’re leaning towards a future switch to Sony. Hope that helps.

    Owl is an easy bird to shoot picture to, they are big, doesn’t move much, and moves relatively slowly. Try your gears on smaller and more agile birds… These is no workaround to match budget gears to the big primes or flagship camera body. Can budget gears get somewhat ok results, definitely yes. But there is no comparison to the general IQ or bokeh. Furthermore, One can get much better results than yours with only $2.5k budget: a $500 used 5D/6D/7D series body with a $1500 used Canon 500mm f/4.5 prime lens and $500 for a budget gimbal and tripod/monopod combination… will get your images about 90% to indistinguishable to the $15-20k gears.

    I don't know...seems to me that knowing the animal's behaviour, and being capable of understanding when to capture a peak moment, that's worth something that 20 fps may not manage (you got there ..at 9:40)...20 or xx fps is simply a substitute, albeit a real help. Ah, but that's just the fuddy-duddy "old school" in me ;-)

    I am confused, why would one take away contrast just to add it back in when using curves? Like you explained why you wanted to reduce the contrast but then straight afterwards you just undid it with a different section.

    • @OverlandExposures
      @OverlandExposures  2 роки тому

      Generally speaking, I tend to lift the shadows on the curve. When you lift the shadows it creates a new threshold. As long as your other points in the curve don’t go below it, your blacks can’t get any blacker than the lowest point you’ve set. What I did on the curve is lifted shadows and squished the mids into it… but not below it. It’s difficult to explain without showing on a scope. But once you see it on a scope it’s easier to understand. It’s like a rising tide lifts all boats. The lowest point on the curve would be the waterline.

    I have a baked potato hahaha. It's an XT4, but I do not have any "pro" telephoto lenses D: Why must photos and videos be such an expensive career/hobby.
    I do have a Canon telephoto kit lens, which works fine for slow stuff, but isn't the fastest focusing lens, especially via adapters. Then again I live in the city and question my wants for an expensive credit card debt when all I get are pigeons and sparrows.

    Question from a newbie: I would like to take videos of birds in my backyard similar to this example on UA-cam: ( ua-cam.com/video/xbs7FT7dXYc/v-deo.html ) where the camera is stationary on a tripod and pointed at one spot while recording birds landing and eating food ( not flying in the air ). I have am considering buying a Sony A7Siii and a Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS Super Telephoto Zoom Lens but don't know if that is the best option. I am concerned the SonyA7Siii does not have enough pixels and I am concerned the Sony FE 200-600mm will not work well at dawn or dusk which I read is a problem with that lens. Do you have any advice on which camera and lens to buy to take bird the type of bird videos I want to capture ? Thank you.

    • @OverlandExposures
      @OverlandExposures  2 роки тому

      The Sony a7Siii is one of the best video cameras ever made for the pro consumer. Having less pixels for video is actually a better thing because the pixels have to be larger to cover the full frame. Larger pixels gather more light than high density/high megapixel cameras. This is why most cinema cameras only have six or eight pixels. A high pixel count usually only impresses photographers and even they will pay at the expense of low light performance. That’s why a lot of the sports photography and wildlife photography cameras hang out around that 20 megapixel mark. It’s enough resolution for them to be able to crop in without losing much but also performs better in low light when using fast shutter speeds. The 200 to 600 mm F5.6 to 6.3 is an excellent choice of land that would suit that camera very well for what you are doing. I almost always prefer a zoom lens when shooting video. This allows me to capture the environment and the subject in multiple different ways from a single vantage point. It allows for a better story to be told. Hope this helps!

      @@OverlandExposures Thank you very much for your thoughtful response. Do you think the Sony 200 to 600 mm F5.6 to 6.3 is a better option than the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | S or Sigma 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM | S ? ( To be honest I am a little concerned that the Sony 200 to 600 mm F5.6 to 6.3 will not work well enough at dusk or dawn when most of the birds are active in my backyard )

      @OverlandExposures  2 роки тому

      @@newlifeeveryday1821 I couldn’t answer that to be specific. I’m sure there are some very specific lens comparisons in those realms. However, I would always gravitate towards native mounts. Hope that helps.

    Your FPS doesn’t really have much to do with it in my opinion. I shoot the Canon 5D MK IV, which shoots only 7 frames per second, less than your camera, and I’ve achieved stunning results. Your camera is just fine, no “hacks” needed. Best advice is learn to be a photographer to achieve the results you want. Hone your craft. Photographers, even wildlife photographers, have taken stunning shots for over 150 years, long before the new fancy stuff came on the scene. Learn your craft. There’s no easy workaround, and a $20,000 rig won’t make you a better photographer, just a poorer one.

      The Z6 can shoot up to 12 frames per second in High-speed extended mode (12 bit NEF), so you need to change your settings it seems? It is also possible to shoot up to 120 fps (JPEG only) which is a feature not often highlighted.
