Those battlefields were so bare because all trees and buildings had been destroyed by huge artillery barrages. What had been farms and crops and forests had been turned into a wasteland.
My great grandfather was a major in the German Army. He lived long enough to tell us about WW1. This reminds me about him. He told us. He ordered his men to never fire on Christmas Day. As he said. It was the only order he gave. He never regretted.
Paul McCartney and his band wings did a song that's played at Xmas called pipes of peace.the video shows this truce with him playing character on both sides.
Being in the trenches in summer would have been FAR better. Winter usually brings far more rain/snow which would turn the ground at the bottom into acres of mud and freezing cold puddles of water, which in turn would cause soldiers boots to become waterlogged. Those boots would be unable to dry properly because of the constant presence of water on the ground, which would lead to even higher numbers of trench foot and similar problems. Not too mention the increase in things like frostbite and frost nip due to the cold. Also a latrine is a toilet.
Tolkien served in ww1 and he's said that perhaps the inspiration he subconsciously made with the dead marshes were from the dead bodies in the bomb craters in no man's land
Små grodorna the song indy sings is indeed about frogs and we Swedes sing it at midsummer when dancing around the midsummer pole (sometimes at chrismas too dancing around the christmas tree), its origins are a mystery but its a french melody and its quite possible that its a mocking song angainst the French army from the napoleonic wars. The Brittish mock the french and call them frogg eaters and we were part of that war on the Brittish side so maybe thats were the song comes from. But no one knows for sure. Its from the right era though.
The video to THE PIPES OF PIECE by Paul McCartney tells this story. There was also a Christmas advert by Sainsbury’s which also told this story, it brings a tear to the eye.
The tradition of indoor trees comes from Germany and the first known dressed tree in Sweden is from 1741 and was dressed with apples, saffron pretzels and wax candles. From manors, vicarages and school teachers' residences, the Christmas tree spread into the countryside, and by the end of the 19th century it was common throughout the country.
Two things from the British pov - first there were no helmets yet in 1914, and (more important) no conscripts . Conscription didn't begin till 1916. Also, almost none on the volunteers ('Kitchener's Army') were yet engaged. They were mostly regulars and Territorials (that is, reserves).
It's important to remember this truce only primarily happened to between British and German troops the French for obvious reasons really didn't take part some did but the majority didn't same for the Belgians.
My father always believed that the terrible loss of so many young men in such dreadful conditions in WWI used, in his words, as "cannon fodder by inept leaders", was the point that so many people in the UK started to drift away from the Church.. I've no idea if that is true or not, but certainly we are a far less religious country than we once were..
Those young men were used as cannon fodder by warmongers. It was no-stop slaughter of the innocents in a war to end all wars. In 2014 the supermarket chain Sainsburys launched a Christmas advertising campaign to commemorate the centenary of this moment. The result is a moving account of one moment in time and well worth watching.
There is a fantastic French movie on this : Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas) from 2005 by Christian Carion with Diane Kruger and Guillaume Canet, among many other obviously.
The trenches and the battlefield you see in this video is basically what the battlefields look like in Ukraine now. No cover at all, especially in the south. It's all muddied farm fields, for miles upon miles, a front 70 miles or more deep (Ukrainian side) and 400 miles wide, and it's basically all flat. There's some cover in the east, but not much, especially around Bakhmut. The soldiers at the front all in tranches, every once in a while making a push. But this is a modern trench battle. There's no escaping the watchful eye of the drones or their bombs. Don't expect any repeat of the Christmas Truce though, as the ground freezes over after this mud season, it's again time for tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to make a showing again, hoping to push through the lines. Russia to try to make a rush to take Donbass as they have tried for the last 9 months, and Ukraine to liberate the areas occupied by Russia. The few weeks of lull from mud season in the south will be broken in not too long.
I'm on r/europe a lot (it's amazing, talking about things happening now then countries bringing up arguments with things other countries did things 200 years ago). Last week someone posted a photo of a Ukrainian trench, the mud everywhere, the landscape nothing but mud and mangled trees. Someone posted colourised photos of ww1 trenches and black and white photos of current Ukrainian trenches. It was hard to tell them apart, only way was some shots Ukrainian armour etc obviously modern. It's appalling the worst of ww1 trenches with drones, modern missiles etc to cope with on top.
@@dirtystarlight dont talk rubbish.. WW1 trenches were piled high with dead bodies, soldiers ravaged with dysentery, and they lacked any sort of consistent supply line.. The Ukranian trenches are very very very muddy.. That's true... But they are not filled with disease and countless dead bodies.. And they also have a constant supply line.
3:00 look at this guy, he is propably siting on a latrine. It is basicly a hole in the ground you can sit on to do your "business". Ok after having a second look it also could be the entry to the underground section. Not sure. 29:16 to answer your question. Nope the ortodox x-mas is at the 7. January, so this also could happen around the x-mas time. Also, i guess the reason that germany is the first country that comes into your mind when it comes to x-mas. It is because x-mas is basicly a german invention as far as i know. Even if the traditions have changed a lot, the basic tradition of a x-mas tree comes from the germanic tribes, to celebrate their pre chritianic traditions. I think they celebrated the starting Winter, especialy the fact that the days become longer around this time in the year.
Easter in Russia is just like Christmas in Russia. Currently 13 days behind all the other countries who use the Gregorian calendar instead of the Julian one.
I'm British but I think I have heard k pronounced as G or J when people speak Swedish. Both a k and gu sound are formed really similarly with the tongue on the top of the mouth.

Nope. No "dj" sound in swedish, so everytime you see a J or something that should be a similar sound, it's a lot like your Y sound. And also.. A big difference in WW2 and many of the wars you have fought after that. In WW2 you were on the defending side, the good side. That's not so certain after that. There's a reason many of the countries you have been fighting in hates you..
Watch the sainsburys ad about the Christmas truce .
💯- this is a must watch!
Those battlefields were so bare because all trees and buildings had been destroyed by huge artillery barrages. What had been farms and crops and forests had been turned into a wasteland.
You should watch the 2014 Sainsbury's Christmas advert, it's literally about this event .

The Royal Guardsmen brought out "Snoopy's Christmas" which relates to the 1914 Christmas truce, in the late 1960s. I play it every Christmas.
You want to watch Saisburys Christmas advert about the truce, very touching and makes you think.

It came to Britain thanks to Queen Victoria's husband Albert who was German
Sabaton put it best..
"War.. whats so fucking great about it?"
In Liverpool , england , there is a statue commemorating the 1914 Christmas peace.
The latrine is the bathroom, well more like an outhouse or just a hole for them to shit in.

What's a latrine?! Give me strength!!!
Men standing against those in charge. Just for a while but so important. Never the soldiers fault.
What a shame they didn't just all drop their weapons and go home.
The football is in a regimental museum in the UK. I forget which one though.
If not already, you should check out Sabaton, No bullets fly, the animated version 🙂

Ww1 1000s of men were dying in the trenches every day.. Very different
@@markmorris7123 Nobody said it was exactly the same or equally bad. "... basically what the battlefields look like.." And yes. In many places it is.
It is why after both world wars we were able to live in peace it was those in charge not the ordinary man.
To this day some of the battlefields are still scared, I`ve visited the battlefields of Belguim and France many times and its still shocking to see.
Yes mate it was called a war of attrition.
