- Today I talk about how our season is going so far, Are we up for production or down??
Plus I throw Dad some questions about the changes I've made to see what he thinks of them.

Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

I'm not a farmer, nor have I ever been but I love watching The Once A Day Farmer. You obviously love what you do and it shows, keep up the great work and I look forward to watching many more shows
That’s awesome to hear thanks! 🙏👌
I didnt used teat seal on dry cows and now after 5 months using it the ssc of those cows have been lower than they used to be. And to use the right antibiotic depending on the bacteria its a lot more effective. Really nice cows andrew, good luck.
That’s interesting aye! 🤷
Yeah i think it’d be a massive game changer 👍
Great to see the interaction between yourself and your father, fantastic to see him let you try out new things on the farm. Every day is a school day and the only way to learn is try it out 👌
Very educational
Beautiful Waikato!
Loved your day.
Great to see the boss more reviews of things with the boss please like to hear the old ways of doing things and now we do it better
👍

Great video Andrew. I love seeing mother and daughter coming in together. One time I had 3 generation calving on same day probably never see that again. Keep them coming 👌
Woah what are the chances of that 🤯
will be interesting on what the end result at the end of the season on the mastitis rates in heifers and cows - I know we (NZer) leave our cow on grass but I can see for the winter season why places like the UK and Europe house their cows over the winter out of the mud - I will be interested to see what dairy farmers like Tom Pemberton have with the different system - the issue is always $$$ of building the shed the size that is needed because it is big money
They have to bring the cows in because they wouldn't have any fields left after the winter. Too much rain to leave cows in the fields.
Get pretty wet over there so they have to where as we aren’t that bad, so don’t need to.
Infrastructure like that to house cows is very costly plus it’s also very labour intensive 🤷
Irish farmers getting good results with selective dry cow.You cannotgive dry cows antibiotics now unless you have proof of high cell count in individual cows some milk buyers now insist on all suppliers milk recording. You have to get a prescription from vet to buy dry cow tubes. Most farmers now use teat seal on heifers usually put in by a hoof tech with turnover crate. Some cows housed here for 5 months in wet areas with peat ground were as in the east 2 months full time and maybe one month by night. We seldom get snow.My friends currently cells is 102,6 clinical cases so far and4 lame cows so far.Scanning results 1.6 empty in milking cows after 14 week breeding and 1 empty heifer out of 61.No sexed semen used, last year he used and ended up with less heifers than normal
I think your extra colostrum milkings will pay off when this year's heifers freshen. You'll see it in the life span of those calves.
Also, yes, you definitely need to be treating your mastitis with the correct abx. Some are completely ineffective against certain bugs.
I'm jealous of your weather, we're too hot here. :)
Best wishes.
Yep that machine would be a seriously good investment 👌
The heat sucks! 😩
Enjoyed the Video
do you strip the cows out before milking? a simple but time consuming step but very worthwhile when you catch the mastitis without having to go looking for it after the SCC has gone up.
Give them a shot of B 12,and watch the coats improve, plus mating is not far away so selenium as well 😉
Yep just done mine
I was wondering about that 👌
I'm not sure of your milking routine but, was curious if you use a barrier teat dip post milking; when we switched to a barrier teat dip post milking our SCC dropped over 30,000, was well worth it in my thinking. Any ways, always enjoy your videos, Jeff
Yep always use a test spray after we take the cups off 👍
Thanks Jeff! Jeez 30k is bloody mint 👌
Hello Andrew good video. For me makes things confusing since your seasons are different than here. We are ending summer. I wonder if there is a difference in milking 2 times a day than 1 with mastitis? Have a great day.
I agree spring isn't til October but goddammit that grass is growing like mental for a few weeks now 😅
It’s good aye! Sounds like it’s going to be a hot dry spring so it should be flying even more soon 👌
@@TheOnceADayFarmer for sure, hopefully this prediction for a few days rain every few weeks holds true though and it'll be spring growth til March 😀
I think acr would speed your milking up and lower your scc we av 10 cases/ 100 cows per year and a scc of 80. We teat seal everything and use antibiotics tubes with scc over 200. Great videos look forward 2 watching them
Would definitely help as nothing would be getting over milked, if we extend our shed at some point we’ll definitely put acrs in 👌
Those are good figures graham 👍
We mik our cows once a day for 2 months after calving and our scc is1 20 and we use dry cow
Andrew what time do you and your dad start milking and my condolences on the passing of the queen
Starting just after 5 at the moment, yes very big day in history 👍
my SCC is 180-220. too high really. maybe 100 to high. been really wet at times this winter in Northland. had long dry spells too 13 % behind for season.
alot of mastitis and also subclinical mastitis
We only use a seal on dry cows with a cel count above 50 for older milk cows and above 150 fore heifers
Why is that? Is it just case they don’t need it?
@@TheOnceADayFarmer in holland we are not allowed to use a lot of antibiotics that is the main reason
yeah down here cell count been higher then what we like can’t wait for herd test to find some high celled cows
Same here 😅
We calve in June and July
When does the silage properly start in newzealand, I’m going over in October working 🚜
Depends where your going, but here in the Waikato about October when we start planting maize 👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer I’m going down to the south not far from Christchurch
How many gallons are your cows averaging a day when fresh? Just wondering can't wait for my nurse cow to calf . Also My replacement heifer needs to be bread I found her cycling a few days ago so I marked my calendar. The dairy I go to get them AI done only charge 35 dollars Including the seamen . They guy was like it easy to learn. I was like I'm happy to pay you to stick your hand up my cows butt . It's just not practical to keep a tank for 2 cows.
What are your cows doing per cow at the moment? Definitely teat seal the cows, definitely worth it. Great video. Your doing a great job
Probably around 1.35 at the moment, usually peak at about 1.5.
I’d be interesting to do it and see how it goes for sure, hopefully he comes round to the idea 😂
@@TheOnceADayFarmer Andrew you could compromise and teat seal 50% or some percentage and compare next season mastitis counts between sealed and unsealed cows. A less costly test that way.
How is your Lab doing? She's a beauty.
She’s doing good, I need to film her and put her in a video soon 😅
Hey Andrew has Fronterra come to the party yet with an increase in farm gate price as the world dairy auction price went up this week 👍
Haha nah they actually decreased it not that long ago, was a good milk auction but i think it’s the only one that been positive in like the last 12 😅
We dc therapy everything over 120 scc also teat seal all our cows. it does cost. but saves alot of time and cows. Nothing worse than the favorite cow going 3/4
Yep fully agree with you on that 👌
I think your dads enthusiasm towards 2X colostrum cows is not as high as yours😊 might be a function of age . You will come to appreciate that 😊😊
Haha it’s definitely not 😅😂
Has anyone tried colloidal silver for mastitis? i wonder if that would work.
🤷
Your going for early planting this year Andy ?
Yep trying something new 😅
Did you ever consider some of your cow are being over milked with no acrs. Something like a delaval duovac would be a good investment
Yep they would be, but a lot of people don’t have ACR’s in NZ.
Will get them eventually but probably not this season.
The duo vac is another option. It drops the vacuum when the milk flow stops. But the cluster still stays on the cows. . Also in lreland most people teat seal all cows if they get antibiotics or not. But then again that's for cows that's are going to be housed for the winter. Very different to your system
As long as the milking plant as a good vacuum reserve and pulsation are stable over milking shouldn't be that big an issue
ACR can cause more problems with not being setup correctly and under milking cows and having half witted lame brains fiddling around with them
@@KiwiJim13 I won't be with out acrs speaking from my experience with then. Scc is under 60k most of the year. But them again never had scc issues then I didn't have either
Acr in a 16 a side is unnecessary cost, better off spending else where
What sort of dairy farmer are you, don't even have overall on milking
Haha nah I haven’t been wearing them this season and to be honest it’s really comfy with out them 😂🤷
