Christmas 1989 I was too busy enjoying my first ever CD player and proper HiFi, along with the latest blockbuster home micro computer games. I was 18 years old and had started earning my own money, so these were presents to myself for a change!
mikey p Sure did and the model in question was an ivory white Sony XO-D50CD + CDP-M55. Not much on Google but there are a few photos in white etc. Yeah like your dad the first CDs I ever heard were those two, plus Europe - The Final Countdown and ABBA - The Singles - The First Ten Years. The last one I heard at a specially arranged department store CD demonstration in 1985, which was held in the evening after it had closed; by appointment only! Luckily my mum worked there and got me an invite. The store was an upmarket one called Christopher Pratts in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It was around 100 years old or more, but sadly has moved out now.
mikey p Yes I still live in Bradford but I do not have any photos or videos of that evening in 1985; shame as it was good. The music was played on a powerful system with large speakers, all well placed and setup. I also had a nice Panasonic SG-X7 Music Centre in 1985 to 1989, which sounded good if a little bass light but no CD player. mikey p Yeah got the Sony in December 1989. My parents never bought a CD player for themselves, they just used whatever I had in the house. My mum used a beautiful Technics LP player which we only recently threw out (my fault!) and I regret doing so, as I want to use it now! The Pansonic from 1985 I mentioned was in a sort of dark grey colour, hard to describe but looked very stylish. Yes I remember shows llike Knightmare and Gamesmaster, Micro Live, The Computer Programme and a few others. I even remember downloading games and other programs from our TV, by recording the sound on to a cassette recorder! I sometimes did this from our local radio stations. I feel truly very lucky to have been a child in the late 1970s / early 80s when the home computer revolution first exploded; nobody had ever seen computer graphics before, apart from the occasional green terminal screen in a blockbuster film. I often wonder what kids of today feel and think about the latest computer stuff, because for me way back then it was in the true sense of the word....magical and mysterious! As for going to Kent....no but my mum and sister have a few times. My hometown of Bradford was once a good place, but as you know it is a dangerous multi-cultural melting pot place these days. There is some great history and architecture though.
mikey p Yep I can identify with all you have said and yes....arcades were brilliant! I was born in 1971 so I remember when owning a good digital calculator was a big deal, and around 1984 I had one on a wrist watch but that was being a bit too flashy and nerdy!
The reason why I said the early years were magical etc, was because computers and a lot of technology we tale for granted now did not exist in peoples everyday lives, and then suddenly out of nowhere it went beserk! I saw the a microwave oven in 1982 for the first time, and could not understand how it could possibly work and actually cook food.
The computers I had or used to begin with were; NASCOM 2; ZX Spectrum 48K (rubber keys) and later the + model; Amstrad CPC464; Atari 1040STE and then PCs. I've used just about nearly all the known computers from the 1980s, such as C64, C16, Plus4, BBC Micro, Jupier ACE, ZX81, Dragon 32, Amiga 500/600, VIC=20, Electron, MSX 1 and many, many more!
Yes I want to get out of the EU, as it is something setup after WWII by the elites to construct an eventual single world government, police force, global currency with the total loss of freedom that would bring to us all. Sadly no matter how we vote, the results will be adjusted to make sure we stay in.
mikey p Sadly although I had a very rubbish cheap camera back in the 1980s, I never took any photos of the things I owned; I could not afford the photo developing costs with my pocket money either. I recently sold almost every retro computer I owned, but I did put a quick video up on my UA-cam channel, not to do anything interesting, it was just to show it working for my Ebay auction. It's a rare computer and I had two, the Atari Falcon 030.
I also sold all the expensive upgrades which were mainly pro audio stuff for it; very sophisticated and impressive for the 1990s. I just have a ZX Spectrum 48K, ZX81 (now stopped working for some unknown reason), Commodore 64 (breadbin model) and a Psion Series 3 PDA (I also had a 3mx). I have a few bits left that I did not sell, such as a couple of virtual floppy emulators with SD card slots. So not much of a collection these days lol!
I ploughed the money from what I sold into more electric guitars and also upgrading my audiophile music equipment. The only collection of sorts I have now is around nine IBM Thinkpad laptops, mostly 2004, 2006/8 models and they are superb.
Yes I would like to know who voted Cameron in too, I certainly did not vote for him! Not sure I will vote again, I mean it is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic....it is going to sink no matter what!

1989 was when the "Get Ready for ITV"campaign started, a lot of the regions chose to bow out and stick two fingers up at the Generic ITV ident that was being made for all regions namely ( TVS, TSW, Anglia, Granada only used it briefly considering it was their idea in the first place, and Scottish used it for a total of 2 months only), considering so much money was put into the campaign and idents, its no wonder it was sub-par TV in 1989.

1988 even though it had santa claus: the movie and allo allo i would have had to go with star wars :)
1989 was very slim pickings, it probably would have been bbc..... just for the movies.

1989 - the start of the generic look
What I'll say about that TV line up is "old white men". At least now we have some young people, more women (often comedians) and people of various colours - helps break up the tedium.
We didn't like Paul Daniels in our house as Dad meet him twice and was rude to him both times. And we've always thought Noel Edmonds was a fruity creep.
