Okay people, you need to sit back down and chill. Listen, literally every video these guys have done over the years had some sort of twist or variation to it. I can not remember ever having seen a recipe where it was THE ultimate original recipe, much less one that fits everybody's perfect vision of one. Cooking and baking is a very personal thing, plus Ben is a very creative chef. If you cannot accept the fact that their recipe might just not be the one you're looking for and you have a feeling it's not going to be as tasty for you and a waste of time, shut the fridge door and leave. Thank you and good night.
***** I gathered just how much you don't care from all the comments you left. Doesn't make an ounce of sense, but it's Christmas, so I hope you have a good day. Happy holidays!
Right? I mean...they actually mentioned in the description that it might look like a traditional cake but that it actually isn't. I just don't understand why some people use their time to leave rude comments when it's really easy to simply do it the way they like. The Sorted boys are a cool bunch with lots of refreshing ideas but obviously they're not for everyone. I don't know how people don't get that. Thanks for your reply, though. Lovely to see someone in the comment section who isn't fueled by hate. :)
EndingsAreHard if they don't want people complying they shouldn't call what they made a battenberg cause that's not a battenberg you don't vary things in a traditional cake like that you just don't do you stop complying about other people complaining
This recipe is great! Boyfriend has severe nut allergy and the lack of almond in this helps. Also, I don't like marzipan so another bonus. Thanks, Sorted! :)
Usually yes it should be made with marzipan... and please do if you like that! But personally, I'm not a fan of marzipan which is why this one is our absolute best version! :D
Thanks for the kind words! we do already have both... if you struggle to find them on youtube then head to our website where you can search for 'pizza' and 'sushi'
Mix real whipped cream with room temp cream cheese and spread between the layers of cake. Lay out a bottom piece of marzipan on the intended serving plate and set the checkerboard sponge cake on top. Drape large sheet of marzipan over entire cake. Snug it around the cake, trimming away the excess marzipan, then wiping any crumbs on the serving plate. Delicious!
Will try this tomorrow. But instead of cream cheese I will use lemon curd to glue these babies together. And a good old royal icing will do as well. But thanks and yes I am so glad I found this channel, though not being the target group of subscribers!🤷🏼♀️
One way to do it is to melt marshmallows in the microwave (like 30 seconds, not over-zapped), and then fold in icing sugar until it's moldable :) Otherwise, I think you can probably buy fondant in specialty cake shops like here in NZ
in portugal we do it with normal cake and chocolate cake. and instead of the fondant we use melted chocolate. we call it ''xadrez'' which means checkers
If you don't want the fondant to be sticky after cookie cutting it, you can pop the cutter with the fondant still in it, into the freezer for a minute. And then take it out same way with a knife or any utensil. :)
I am a baker and I would advise not cracking the eggs directly into the mixer for a couple of reasons. Crack them into a little bowl first and you can eliminate any errant egg shell and also the occasional 'bad' egg.
Not a silly question at all. If there is an almond taste its probably because the cake was made with marzipan (almond paste) to cover it instead of the fondant icing the guys used. You can buy it in blocks (with similar consistency to the fondant icing) and then roll it out to however thick you would like it before you use it to cover the cake :-)
you could try putting jam in before you bake.. that way you would have colour and flavour. Maybe lemon zest for the other one but it wouldn't be very bright.
take some normal sugar and bit it in the blender by it self, makes it refined. it is just the texture that changes. Bit small portions, makes it easier and faster
Traditional Battenberg cake is covered in Marzipan and filled with Apricot jam. The pink and yellow is right though! And not everyone likes marzipan so fondant is a good replacement in my mind, but no jam? I have seen it with other types of jam or jelly as well. But still, lovely work!
The extra cake trimmed off could be good for cake pops. Mix it with a tad bit of frosting until it's play-doh texture. Then roll them into balls and insert sticks with a little chocolate as glue.
I just have never seen it in stores around here in Germany. Maybe we don't have it here or I did not look closely enough or not at the right places. But thank you for the other video recipe, it will make my future cakes so much more glamourous, if I get the opportunity to do bows and other stuff :)
Hey any suggestions for some recipes for a kitchen with extremely limited equipment? I only have two burners, no oven. I cook loads of pasta and stir frys but I would love to branch out more.
Why no marzipan guys? That's the best bit! This does look really good and simple though, will definitely try it out but with marzipan instead because I love it tooooo much.
I thought usually in a batten burg cake, you'd use marzipan to drape over the top because to me I think that would taste like angle cake with fondant. Oh and could you possibly do a recipe for angel cake
its their version of the Battenburg... the great thing about food is that you don't need to stick to the original you can mix it up a bit and call it your own... thats what they do every episode
Sophie Muir Not to say you were going to, but don't use Dr. Octors food dye. ;-; It stops the cake from rising. : c But have fun!! I'm sure your mum will love it. ^.^
If you want to crack your eggs with a crack around halfway around the shell, you just crack it on the INSIDE of the bowl, not the top. :) x Love you guys!

+Ava Chamberlain Exactly my point. This is a cooking community channel, where everyone plays to their own strengths. There is no place for hate here.

Usually the variations make the flavor better or just different. Some of these changes are just shortcuts.
This recipe is great! Boyfriend has severe nut allergy and the lack of almond in this helps. Also, I don't like marzipan so another bonus. Thanks, Sorted! :)
i made and it came out perfect:) But I didn't have any fondant so i just made a simple vanilla Icing:) thanks for another amazing recipe!
Cream cheese? Fondant? What about apricot jam and marzipan?
I agree. Ruined
Usually yes it should be made with marzipan... and please do if you like that! But personally, I'm not a fan of marzipan which is why this one is our absolute best version! :D
I think lavender and green tea would go great as well!
This is great! Almonds are so expensive these days, I was specifically looking for a recipe that didn't use them. Thanks guys!
I had never seen such a cake before and I know so much about food, whenever I find something new im amazed!
Can't go wrong with chocolate!
Ben: "one with lemon and yellow flavor."
Never knew colors had flavor.
Still love you Ben! ❤
I love battenburg one of my favourite cakes will be giving this a try myself :)
Usually yes... and please do if you like that! But personally, I'm not a fan of marzipan which is why this one is our absolute best version! :D

I have never once made any of the recipes in Sorted videos, yet I watch every single one. Well played Ben, well played.
Used to love the Marks and Spencer's Battenberg. Live in Canada now and they aren't here anymore :(
Sorted videos are now my revision procrastination, completely obsessed! :P
Will try this tomorrow. But instead of cream cheese I will use lemon curd to glue these babies together. And a good old royal icing will do as well. But thanks and yes I am so glad I found this channel, though not being the target group of subscribers!🤷🏼♀️
:D Ben's face at the end is the face i make at least 50 times a day, a look caught between laughter and anger while jamie's right beside trolling
And we're glad you found us too! :D
You can add a few drops of almond extract to the icing when you make it, or like they did with the food coloring, add it, mix it up, then roll it out.
One way to do it is to melt marshmallows in the microwave (like 30 seconds, not over-zapped), and then fold in icing sugar until it's moldable :) Otherwise, I think you can probably buy fondant in specialty cake shops like here in NZ
I like when Ben says "silly mind games" , it's so funny!
Would marzipan taste alright with the rose and lemon?
I love Jamie's cheeky smiles. :)
I use jam for putting in the middle of the cakes and marzipan ontop because it makes it sweeter. :D
Glad you're enjoying them! All of the recipes? Think you might have your work cut out to achieve that!
YES! I've been looking everywhere for a new cake for birthdays and I think I've found it. Gunna try it out tonight!
It's cool for a treat every now and then!
in portugal we do it with normal cake and chocolate cake. and instead of the fondant we use melted chocolate. we call it ''xadrez'' which means checkers
So glad that I've found your SORTED channel - been obsessed with watching your videos!!! ;)
If you don't want the fondant to be sticky after cookie cutting it, you can pop the cutter with the fondant still in it, into the freezer for a minute. And then take it out same way with a knife or any utensil. :)
I swear you guys deserve to be well known
I just discovered your channel, and I LOVE it! Your videos are short, sweet, and to the point :)
Of course!
This is the first thing i ever baked as a kid in school, we had no electric wisks so had to do it by hand. it took a while. tasted amazing though.
I am a baker and I would advise not cracking the eggs directly into the mixer for a couple of reasons. Crack them into a little bowl first and you can eliminate any errant egg shell and also the occasional 'bad' egg.
It's our Sorted twist! :D
that blender is so pretty - I WANT IT!
The ending was epic. Ugh, I love Ben and Jaime. :D
Lesson one I learned from sorted: To start a recipe, insert butter.
Lesson two: To make it tasty, add more butter.
you could try putting jam in before you bake.. that way you would have colour and flavour. Maybe lemon zest for the other one but it wouldn't be very bright.
like the checkered look when sliced
Never realized how easy these things are!
take some normal sugar and bit it in the blender by it self, makes it refined. it is just the texture that changes. Bit small portions, makes it easier and faster

Good idea... coming soon!
I really wish I could just have you guys in my kitchen....Forever. That way I wouldn't have to make anything myself.
The extra cake trimmed off could be good for cake pops. Mix it with a tad bit of frosting until it's play-doh texture. Then roll them into balls and insert sticks with a little chocolate as glue.
I'll have to try this although as an almond lover and fondant hater mine will be covered in the more traditional marzipan.
I just have never seen it in stores around here in Germany. Maybe we don't have it here or I did not look closely enough or not at the right places. But thank you for the other video recipe, it will make my future cakes so much more glamourous, if I get the opportunity to do bows and other stuff :)
Caster sugar is the really fine sugar, here in the states it's called bakers sugar. Regular sugar has more coarse granules (:
I know it's the sorted version but a hint almond is a must with the Battenburg!
Hmm is it possible to cover all the cake with the fondant?
My mom loved this recipe and we'll make it soon!
Cheers from Greece guys♥
I don't like apricot jam so I'm glad someone is using something other than apricot jam!!!!
guys you do it every time! Love this cake so beautiful!! xoxo
Have you ever tried turkish delight? It tastes like that! :D
made this yesterday, it was SO good and with a cup of tea... Heavenly
Food innuendos are the best.
What kind of tea would you recommend to go with this? I'm not a regular tea drinker, so I'm not entirely sure what goes well with what.
I love that you've done it without marzipan.. all the ones in the shops have it, and I can't stand the stuff, this is definitely a weekend activity
That is sooo cool ! I think ill trie to do it tomorrow ? Kann you use vannile extract instead of rosewater to ?
He pays them back by making them awesome food. How nice! :P
what a beautiful mixer
rubber scrapers. honestly. every scrape is a mouthful.
love love love your subscribe pillow and @ 'at' trivet!
Wow, that looks delicious! I might adopt the tea and cake tradition. :)
I love your funky mixer.
Hey any suggestions for some recipes for a kitchen with extremely limited equipment? I only have two burners, no oven. I cook loads of pasta and stir frys but I would love to branch out more.
Always wanted to know how to make battenburg!! Its my fav cake!! :)
oh wow I've seen this cake before but I never knew what it was! definitely trying after my exams!! :)
can you use jam instead of cream cheese as the glue?
love the recipe guys x
Cool, thanks! I got a few ideas of things I want to try now.
Awesome cake guys! Looked absolutely delicious!
this reminds me of the Rhod Gilbert show I went to yesterday, Rhod Gilbert: The Man With The Battenberg Tattoo
Where can one procure a pink "sorted" pepper mill?
Im looking forward to your Christmas holiday recipes!!!!
That's what we like to hear. Did she have a favourite colour/flavour?
Best cake of all time.
could you all do a pumpkin soup recipe i would love to make some for thanksgiving next week
I liked when Ben mentioned silly mind tricks, Jamie nodded his head. It would be a Jamie thing to do.
Battenberg Cake dessert is very good. That is tough. YES.
Its looks really good.I'm going to try it.
Regular sugar is fine!
You guys should make a cinnamon coffee cake
Have you seen our Mince Pies video we did with Will Young?
i like the intro that tastemade had for you guys
thanks wondered how to perform this method for a long time now! :)
haha Jamie's face when Ben says put your pink one in there :P
its their version of the Battenburg... the great thing about food is that you don't need to stick to the original you can mix it up a bit and call it your own... thats what they do every episode
Of course, it's your cake!
I'm gonna make this for my dad's birthday.
But I'll do it in the classical shape of a cake, ( but the inside will still be different colours. )
I am doing it for my mums
Sophie Muir Not to say you were going to, but don't use Dr. Octors food dye. ;-; It stops the cake from rising. : c But have fun!! I'm sure your mum will love it. ^.^
I am making this the next time friends come over for tea!
Omg these are my favourite desserts! I'm so glad you guys made this, definitely gonna try it :) Thanks again Sorted
If you want to crack your eggs with a crack around halfway around the shell, you just crack it on the INSIDE of the bowl, not the top. :) x Love you guys!
