Great tips, wish Id known those 3 yrs ago! Align to edge is one I use at times, but align axis to face is so handy I assigned a custom shortcut. On angled floorplans, it is a life saver. Alternatively I create a working view with each of my predominant axis orientations first thing when modelling, and this also saves tins of time.

Thanks for that mate. Very clear and informative. Used with scenes this tip is awesome when preparing my models for creating documentation for shop drawings.

These 7+ minute detailed vids on one feature are great. Thanks for taking the time to do these for the folks that have been using SU for a while and can use these "advanced" tips.
How about a Twilight render video?

Steve Hodges As much as I would like to, I tend to shy away from renderers, because I don’t want to showcase one over another... plus, I don’t have a copy of Twilight!

Great video, Aaron. This will be very useful. On the align topic, is it possible to align two different objects with a third object? So for example having two cubes at different heights from the ground and aligning them with the base of a third object.

Hi, initial shape was an icosahedron, not dodecahedron, but regardless, this is a very useful and helpful video, thank you. Kicked myself when I found out about the align axis facility, that's a game changer.

Millio Smiles Yeah... I caught that AFTER I recorded (I corrected myself in the description). Once you pass six sides, does really even matter?

Hi I love these quick tips a lot. I have trouble drawing a Archimedes screw right now, do you also have a quick tip for that? I watched your screw tutorials already but it doesn’t seems to work well for these wide and flat surfaced screws.

Great video, I didn't know that about the Zoom tool-that is doesn't align itself to the cursor. Also the tip about aligning the axes to a face is really useful, gotta try that one out

    Great Vid Aaron.
Did you notice how impractical is the 3D text?! especially when it comes to consecutive entries.
Why does it get closed after each entry?! You know dear, I think we are in need to a SketchUp Builder lesson about tips and tricks in using text & dimensions.

    • @artworksenvisioneering2167
      @artworksenvisioneering2167 5 років тому

Thom Thom created 3d editable text which is a great plug in if you want more functionality for 3D text. Never under estimate the text function in Layout. Often the fastest way to work in text.

Thank you. One thing I was hoping you would cover is how to properly orient a plan. Let's say you have a site plan with building, geolocated, ...and the building is not oriented north-south. We can use the "Views" toolbar...select the"Plan" icon (roof as seen above) (or "Align View" from context menu)...and that gives us a plan, which is oriented "north up"(top of monitor). If I want to rotate the view exactly around the Z-axis...such that the building itself is oriented up-down, and the north arrow is not...I can't find a way to do that. I just keep rotating and hoping I am getting darned close by panning the image to the edge of the screen and judging whether my exterior wall is parallel to the monitor edge, then panning back to center.
Is there a way to orient the building exactly up-down in this example?

Aaron, Thanks for that. Have a really messed up house drawing and have managed to mix up terrane axes with house floor plan.
Your align view and align axes tips were great. I have lots of axes floating all about now and can go through each one to return the total to global axes but is there an option or app for " global realignment of all disparate axes to the singular world origin ?

SketchUp really needs to think about adding a “look at” functional that brings the active geometry to full screen like Alias Auto Studio has. Then it would be a simple two mouse clicks to center the geometry and hit align view or vice versa. Thanks for the video.

    • @aarondietzen2995

SketchUp has that. It's called "zoom selection" and it's in the context menu. You can even assign a shortcut to it which makes it super helpful

Lately I have been trying to move "House components" on a site. (All on same Z level). Trying to find the best fit. Although inferencing may be great for many things ... It's not for this. "Nudging" little bit here or little bit there can be very frustrating... Is there a way to use the keyboard arrow keys to move things around? Not necessarily along any of the red or green Axis... But maintain the Z level ? Switching off inferencing would also be great... Any gems there?
