  • The story of Khujjuttarā, one of the two foremost laywomen disciples of the Buddha and Queen Sāmāvatī, the laywomen disciple foremost in loving-kindness (Mettā).
Khujjuttarā was the laywomen disciple foremost in great knowledge about the teaching of the Buddha, and he says laywomen should take her and Nandamātā as examples.
Because Queen Sāmāvatī could not leave her palace in the city of Kosambi to hear the Buddha’s discourses, Khujjuttarā, her servant, went in her place, memorized what the Buddha said, and then returned to the palace to teach the Queen and her 500 ladies-in-waiting. The teachings of the Buddha that she memorized are preserved in a collection of the Sutta Pitaka called the Itivuttaka.
Two alternative translation of the Itivuttaka, one by John D. Ireland and one by Ajahn Thanssaro are available here as ebook and audio:

Khujjuttarā was also an effective teacher: The Buddha commented (in Udāna 7:10) that the Queen and her entire entourage had reached at least one of the stages of awakening, some even became once-returners or non-returners.
