I was fortunate enough to have had a chance to see the movie in the theaters during one of its rare re-releases many years ago. And now I've procured a DVD through let's just say unofficial sources.
I agree Disney needs to step up and deliver this. This is a piece of American history and culture. We know and understand that the oppression of human beings is wrong, but as soon as we start learning and treating the southern slavery time period as history, we can see and accept it as our culture. This movie was and should be a historical piece of artwork. To Disney: Releasing this would be a great benefit to the American culture, if you handle it correctly, releasing this will be great PR
That would be great if Disney did! I had been wonder for years were this film was, I had forgotten the title of the movie but remember the song. This was such an encouraging film to a little girl that I was in the 70's. I got to watch this film and get an understanding of slavery. Yes I thing Disney should join forces with the NAACP to release this film. I really want my kids to see! I had no idea James Baskett received an Oscar for this work.
I love this film, and I'm not sure if it should be re released because I don't know where I stand on it. I hate racism but people will see it in a multitude of ways and you can't control their perspective mostly. It would be interesting to hear what Whoopi had to say.
@JourniHeart23 Baskett did receive an Oscar for his performance in 1948, just six weeks before he died. I am livid that Disney refuses to release this movie (and I'm a liberal!). Just keep writing letters to them, they'll have to give in eventually. Actually, you can find the movie on ebay. There are bootleg copies all over the place.

Song Of The South is one of the best movies ever, I visited Mr. Baskett’s grave in Indianapolis.

let me know, I've looked for it. Most are in a European format, not DVD or video tape.
