    Several commenters that are smarter than me pointed out that the rear hatch is probably used to remove the gun and that makes a lot of sense given how the gun is mounted internally and couldn't be taken out of the front. Thanks guys!
    For anyone interested, I have a few albums of the inside of the Type 97 on my Facebook and tumblr pages if you want to take a look. Links are in the description.

      Agreed. Japan due to a shortage of raw materials tended to sweat the tiny details and micro design every aspect of their tanks and air craft. They weren't always the best, but pound for pound, they were great.

    12:10 There were also AP rounds for the type 1 47mm gun which could in fact penetrate a M4 Sherman tank frontally at 800 yards. Around 800 yards, The AP rounds had 58mm or 2.28 inches of penetration. The frontal hull thickness of most m4 shermans was around 51mm or 2 inches so given the right ammo, the type 1 47mm could definitely penetrate M4 Sherman's from the front. This was sourced from U.S army's "20 July 1945. Report No. 12-b(52), USSBS Index Section 6" report.

    • @issacfoster1113
      @issacfoster1113 3 місяці тому

      If it was using the very rare Japanese type of APCR. In most cases of tank battles I can't penetrate the Sherman. A similar battle that took place where 3 Chi-Ha and 3 Sherman's. When the last Sherman turned it's fron armor below 500 yards. It didn't go through.

      Amazing how they used that stuff all over the place for decades and people didn't just keel over dead every time they got near it, considering people seem to consider it somewhere in the vicinity of chlorine gas or radioactive waste. Unless every Japanese tank member in WW2 died of lung disease after spending days and weeks in those machines, I wouldn't worry too much.

    Finally I made it to the new upload without being 1 hours late. A thing with the Chi-ha and most japanese tanks was that the gun could be independently moved by the gunner. the guns had mounting for horzontal trunions allowing the gunner to aim without needing to turn the turret. this kinda helps with the engine "problem" you've mentioned earlier. the updated Chi-He did away with this and switched to a gear operated.
    I feel really jelous seeing you do all these tank videos. too camera shy to go down rosemead tank museum a mile away from home.
    Hope you do a video on the US tank destroyers especially the M18.

    I have to say I love what the Japanese did for ready ammo storage in this tank. Rounds are packed in through a door in the back of the turret, then pulled out the other end through that box to load during combat.

    I think it'd be interesting to do a video on what kind of requirements someone would have to meet in order to operate a tank.

    But that hatch at the back could be a hatch to lift out the gun? So it's maybe for maintenance.

      In thinking so too now that a few people have mentioned it. I wasn't aware this was a feature for rear hatches on tanks of this era

      Don’t make me laugh. The M4A1 could take on anything in 1942 , and was quite decent in 1944 considering that most of the german forces were StuGs and Panzer IVs. The term “ronson” was assigned to it after the war, as the company never had a catchphrase until many years after the war, and the soldier used “zippo” lighters anyway. It also was one of the safest tanks to be in during the war, only losing 0.6 men per destroyed tank.
      And you say the Chi-Ha was better? The Chi-Ha would shoot shells at it, then have them all bounce as if it’s fighting a tiger. While I do have some respect for Japanese equipment and even tanks, this is completely absurd.

    Very cool you got the Chieftain to colaborate on this one. I have to agree with you about how the japanese tanks are often overlooked and we could use some more information on them. On the other side however I would like to see more information on how lesser known tanks that served in the pacific theatre fared against the Japanese onslaught. Tanks like the M3 Lee/Grant, Matilda, M3 Stuart, M2 medium tank, and the M2A4 light tank. One of my books says the M3 Lee/Grant did fairly well against the japanese but doesnt say why. My guess having all those guns on board would come in handy against a Banzi charge.
