The SRA have offered the following comment on this video: There has been no change to how we calculate the pass mark. There is still no fixed pass mark for SQE1, therefore. We still set the pass mark assessment by assessment. What has changed is the way that the marks are presented to candidates. We are now using a system of scaled scoring where candidate scores are represented on a scale of 1-500 where 300 will always represent the passing score (regardless of where we have set the pass mark). The percentage of correct marks needed to achieve the passing score will still change for each assessment depending on the relative difficulty of the assessment. This change will have a lot of people worried, so I thought a quick video would help
What does this mean for someone that passed FLK2 under the old scoring system but will be sitting FLK1 under the new system? Also does this not mean the exam is now harder because previously you could pass with 52%?
The important question is whether one passes or not. If you have already passed FLK2, this is not affected. As to whether the exam is becoming more difficult, I am not sure. I don't think this change will have substantive effects, even though at first glance it looks like the pass level has increased.
Do you think the formula will affect the score positively?
I don't think it will have any significant impact. This is just a different way to respond to the variying level of difficulty of the exam papers.
