males take a vow to remain vegetarians, celibate, non smokers, non alcohol drinkers for 40 days
they reach the temple and with the darshan they fulfil their vow
they wear black dhoti, black shirt and go barefeet during these 40 days
its a family tradition in many hindu households in the south to visit the temple for the darshan on makara sankranti day in january
