This album wasn't his best, sure, but "Feel the Lightning" is awesome, very chilled out yet exciting. And "When I Was Done Dying" is a lyrical masterpiece, almost like a spoken word piece.
There's no guest vocalist on feel the lightning it's just him using vocal effects. Also no mention of learning to relax? I think that song is a culmination of all things dan deacon but at the top tier of his quality
Dan Deacon is like if Fuck Buttons got happy and turned into a hyperactive cartoon, then were thrown into a blender with 1,000 harmless internet memes, a dash of vegetable oil, and finally became nightmarishly deranged after spending an eternity trapped in a looping episode of Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! That's the way I see it.
absolutely loved this album, as i am not a fan as the far gone experimentalists. I believe dan said himself that what he's doing seems to average music listeners very experimental, but to experimentalists what he's doing is pop music. I love this balance. I also think this album is much greater than the sum of its parts, but can agree that memegen is quite lack luster.
Take It to the Max really screams Battles to me. I'm actually loving this album, probably my favorite of the year so far with Sheathed Wings and Learning to Relax. His tinydeskconcert was really great as well.
My opinion on Feel the Lightning is that Dan puts more passion into this song with every iteration of it. UA-cam search the song and you'll find the live versions. I say versions because Dan changes it up often and it has a better quality with just Dan's voice being modified and the inclusion of other elements. I'm particularly fond of his appearance on the NPR Tiny Desk where he adds a piano that replaces or aggregates with the fancy computer noises. If Dan released a Feel the Lightning single with remixes or live versions, that album would give the forward momentum this album needs.
I followed everything you said and i agree a lot, BUT Bromst is my favorite album. Not that you're wrong in saying what you said about it cause i totally see it... we're just both right. More than his music he seems like a pretty rad human being. It'd be interesting if you could ever interview him.
I think this review was lightly underrated. I love the direction the music is taking, and sometimes lackluster vocals are key to certain affects. Overall I think it was more of a 7/10 for me.
did you check out his npr tiny desk concert for this album? It's fucking hilariously incredible. (The beginning is kinda bad because his piano is out of tune, but after that, the music is awesome, and the vibe overall is just amazing)
Let us all take the time to remember that Dan Deacon is responsible for the viral hit known as "Drinking Out of Cups" Good to see him still turning out material.
I really wasn't too into America, but this album's hooked me so far. Feel the Lightning, Meme Generator, and Take it to the Max have really been sticking with me since I first listened to it. Bromst is one of my favourite albums though, and I feel like this album leans more towards what I'm interested in hearing from Dan, rather than the direction he took things with America.
I didn't think the album was amazing as a whole or Deacon's best but the track "When I Was Done Dying" might just be my fave single of the year so far.
Damn Anthony, I came to your channel through your BROMST review the week you uploaded it. Congratulations on all the awesome content you've put out. Gonna watch this video now.
OH yeah, I forgot you didn't even like it! BROMST was and is one of my favorite records ever. I remember I came to you again when you reviewed Bitte Orca, and that was when I started watching all your stuff. I wonder what Tyler(sirallaboutmusic) and that other dude, blanking on his name, ended up doing
I feel like you shouldn't put so much weight on the rest of an artists compositions especially with someone like Dan Deacon because artistry is always changing your form in some way or another
Hey Anthony you should review this album by Devendra Banhart it's called "Mala" you can listen to the whole album on UA-cam. I just heard it and I think it's brilliant but I want to know your opinion as well. Can you guys Thumbs-Up!
I think you got it right on most of the points you made here. It's a welcome change from the craziness of his previous albums, but it might've popped out of the oven a little early. That said, I still love it and I'd even rate it a bit higher with a light 7. That's just my opinion, though.
Funny thing, the two tracks you did underline as enjoyable (When I was Done Dying and Take it to the Max), were the two that I enjoyed the most, but I enjoyed the whole thing really :)
Great review as always, could you review "Schick Schock"? It's the new album from an austrian band named "Bilderbuch". The album is pretty hyped in germany and austria. I don't know if german lyrics are a problem for you but I would love to know your opinion on this album
So a new Tallest Man on Earth single dropped.. Seems like he has put more instrumentation in this song than what we are used to hear from him..but idk how should i feel about it..have you heard it? If so, what do you think about it??
I really liked this album a lot. To me it is both joyful and artist at the same time and one of my favorites so far this year. I am glad I listened to the music before I listened to your review. I think you got this one wrong.
Ok. I'll say one thing. Bromst was definitely better, but gliss wasn't too much of a disappoint. I really do like "Feel the Lightning". That song is pretty cool.
*Ok so as a heavy hitter in the electronic music scene i have to wade in here and share my opinion! In case anyone doubts my credentials i was the inspiration for the aphex twin albums '26 burts for cash' and the famous ep 'come to jimmy' I also influenced many other artists, but this comment isn't about me and my successes. As a HIGHLY successful youtuber i thumbs DOWN this video! and im going to tell you why? The problem here is that hiphoptano is out of his element when it comes to electronic music. This album doesnt have gangsters rapping about skool playground violence and raiding a mcdonalds for chicken nuggets, so anthony doesnt know how to approach this album. As a key member in the progression of the electronic music scene i can safely say this album has plenty of creativity on display. This artist is going places and i bet my yolo cap that his next album will be dope. THINK about it!*
Hey Anthony! As always thanks for the reviews and showing me some cool music, have a question though. When (if you ever) can't hear some of the techniques and information on the production of the album and cant find it in the album booklet how do you find it? Maybe some websites, books, e.g. Thank you!
You definetely should review some Chevelle's albums (like Hats Off to the Bull or La Gargola). These guys make really characteristic and progressing music :3
Underscored my beloved melon. Dan speaks to the heart of the disaffected antisocial intellectual in this album. Good stuff, Gliss Riffer easily a 7 in my book.
dan is a strange man, and you may not understand all of his methods, but that's because he's euphoric as shit. If you ever feel depressed i recommend giving dan's music a shot at helping you get out of it. Not saying it'll work 100% of the time but it certainly helps me.
Can you please review Year of the Caprese by Cherub. This is an R&B electronic band out of Nashville that incorporates groovy, funky 80's vibe beat. I love this album and would really appreciate if you would give a listen to this album.
This album wasn't his best, sure, but "Feel the Lightning" is awesome, very chilled out yet exciting. And "When I Was Done Dying" is a lyrical masterpiece, almost like a spoken word piece.
Learning to relax!
There's no guest vocalist on feel the lightning it's just him using vocal effects. Also no mention of learning to relax? I think that song is a culmination of all things dan deacon but at the top tier of his quality
learning to relax have sooo many good things inside.

“Feel the Lighting”, “Sheathed Wings”, and “When I was done dying” are certified bangers of a track. The whole album starts real strong.
Well now I am older,

Now what does that say about me?

Take It to the Max really screams Battles to me. I'm actually loving this album, probably my favorite of the year so far with Sheathed Wings and Learning to Relax. His tinydeskconcert was really great as well.
I still love Gliss Rifter. I think it still stands up today. My gateway album. Hello from 2015!
2015?
There's no pleasing this guy
My opinion on Feel the Lightning is that Dan puts more passion into this song with every iteration of it. UA-cam search the song and you'll find the live versions. Black and blue.
White and gold, fuccboi.
Red and Gold...
"Feel The Lightning" is actually Dan using Synths to change his voice, no guest vocalist.
I think this review was lightly underrated. I love the direction the music is taking, and sometimes lackluster vocals are key to certain affects. Overall I think it was more of a 7/10 for me.

Fun Fact! The "guest vocalist" on Feel The Lightning is actually Dan's voice pitched up and modified.
I didn't think the album was amazing as a whole or Deacon's best but the track "When I Was Done Dying" might just be my fave single of the year so far.
actually a Dan Deacon/Merzbow collab would be wonderful on the ears.
if you're deaf.
Damn Anthony, I came to your channel through your BROMST review the week you uploaded it. Congratulations on all the awesome content you've put out. Gonna watch this video now.

Feel the lightning feels "empty"?
I never knew empty could feel so amazing.
as someone who's never heard anything from him, i like this quite a bit. seeing him live this saturday. might not stand up to his early stuff, though
I love that album
Where's that Jimmy Burt's Gaming guy and Misaka Mikoto? Oh well. They'll get here eventually.
My ADHD ass loves Dan Deacon

What do you think of the song Mind On Fire from this album? That song is like my fuckin jam it's so fun
When my friend died, I listened to it a lot.
Funny thing, the two tracks you did underline as enjoyable (When I was Done Dying and Take it to the Max), were the two that I enjoyed the most, but I enjoyed the whole thing really :)

I take it back. This album slaps. Loses momentum the second half tho.. Next album needs to be more wild.
I thought this record was great!
I really liked this album a lot. To me it is both joyful and artist at the same time and one of my favorites so far this year. I am glad I listened to the music before I listened to your review. I think you got this one wrong.

think i heard aphex's other album 'Selected Ambient Burts'
good man
Joe Blog Yeah, that was a great album, but I must admit I'm not too fond of the controversial "Burkqts".
Practice makes perfect.
Keep trying mate, and one day, your comments will be funny.
I think the problem is just that this isn't REAL electronic music
Hey Anthony!
As always thanks for the reviews and showing me some cool music, have a question though. When (if you ever) can't hear some of the techniques and information on the production of the album and cant find it in the album booklet how do you find it? Maybe some websites, books, e.g.

Hi, mister Fantano. Not related to this (imo) excellent record, but you should try the last Mourn record, fresh indie rock/punk from Barcelona.
You reviewed purity ring debut album "Shrines" and I'm curious to know what you think of their new album "Another eternity"
You definetely should review some Chevelle's albums (like Hats Off to the Bull or La Gargola). These guys make really characteristic and progressing music :3
also the 'guest vocalist' on feel the lightning IS dan deacon
Can u review some old swans albums??And what are your top 5 swans albums?

Underscored my beloved melon. Dan speaks to the heart of the disaffected antisocial intellectual in this album. Good stuff, Gliss Riffer easily a 7 in my book.
That's the W R O N G #
I don't get what Anchovy Fandango has against Danny D.
I first heard about Dan Deacon's band Dragoon on Matt Besser's: Improv4Humans podcast on the Earwolf network! Anyone else?
Hey Anthony, review the new Logic single, Top Ten. I know you usually dont review singles, but I really want to know what your thoughts are on it!!!
Feel the lightning is the song that made me a fan of Dan Deacon. 😅
dan is a strange man, and you may not understand all of his methods, but that's because he's euphoric as shit. If you ever feel depressed i recommend giving dan's music a shot at helping you get out of it. Not saying it'll work 100% of the time but it certainly helps me.
