As a former correctional officer in Sweden I can say this video is pretty correct on the Swedish side. But note. One guy was in jail for 4 years until trial...there he was judges not guilty. And note.
it's not a competition. If there are people struggling on another country, it's a sad thing. Remember. The saying isn't "treat sweden as a human", it's "treat humans like humans".
You should, swedens prison system is great, the only downside is rapists also barely get any prison time when in fact they should just be killed right away to prevent them causing more harm in the future.
Are you serious? Should we seriously be proud about taking more care of our prisoners than our elders? Of Course those who has done horrible things should be punished.
I was watching a short documentary about prison that had a few stray cats wander into the prison yard. The cats were friendly and quickly adopted among the different prisoners. The crime decrease and productivity increased among the prisoners since it would let them spend more time with their cats.

Did you know that when a prisoner walks in to his prison cell in sweden he have to build everithing himself because its IKEA i am swedish and i aprove this message
The prison system does vary by state but I’m pretty sure none of them do as well as Sweden. But North Dakota is aiming to find out if Norway’s prison system will work do hopefully, that will spread to the rest of the United States.
Hello I am from Sweden. I am friends with People all around the world. I have no Idea where you’re from but almost every person im friends with knows Someone Thats from America, UK etc.
I'm Swedish and my dad was in prison before I was born. He's always found it mildly amusing and a bit unfair when he thinks about it and has talked about it. They were in a barrack where they slept and there was a community area with a TV and games, lots of comfy couches, etc. He was shocked to arrive there according to him to see such lax conditions. They got well prepared and excellent food each meal and had three options to choose from and they even had Coffee Time(Fika) with loads of pastries and goodies served twice a day. He didn't need to work due to a back issue, so he spent his time chilling, reading and watching TV. He was only in for 9 months and to this day he's shocked by how much comfort there was in *prison.* Yknow the place represented by iron bars and striped suits? However, that's kind of where the sad part goes. A lot of money goes into the prison systems, while things such as our elderly care has been worsening. They don't get tended to, they have to eat cereal and milk three times a day due to budget cuts and they just don't get the time they need after spending their lives working. It's sad. And then there's the schools with old textbooks from ten years ago, underpaid teachers and buildings that are barely kept up, school lunches that taste less like food and more like cardboard. My dad has always thought that why should there be such incredible amounts of money put towards criminals who have done wrong with three course meals and accommodations equalling four star hotels when the elderly and young don't get properly cared for? Especially the elders. Do the prisoners really need such an overflow of food for example? I'm not saying don't treat them like humans, of course we should since it seems to clearly be helping--but do they really need three course meals To be rehabilitated?
Your comment made me realize something. I was kinda thinking after watching this video that something was off, but I couldn't quite figure it out. Now I know. It's the "humane treatment = materially comfort" thing. I mean, those prisons are materially better equipped than probably 80% of the houses of free people in Brazil, or most of the world. And we all know (or at least should) that this doesn't happen because you guys deserves it better. It's simply because of power. Colonialism. Imperialism. Capitalism. Acumulation. Concentration of wealth. We're all human beings, animals born on planet Earth. Why do you guys have all the comfort in the world and other countries don't? Is it because we are lazy? Dumb? Of course not. It's history. It was a choice. We build societies that way. So anyway, what I'm trying to say is, maybe materially the prisons in Sweden simply match the way that people live in there, so for you guys it's kinda normal, but seeing it from Brazil (and dude, I'm a middle-to-high class young white girl in the second richest state of my country, which is the biggest in south america... so there's a looooooooot of people 'below" me) this is just unfair. Not to the sweden, but to humanity living in other countries. I think we as humanity passed the age of thinking nationally. Seriously. I think that we should enter an age of global responsability. Just like it is completely unfair that rich people in US lown mansions, big multinationals corporations, and basically invest on anything they want and guides world market to their will, while poor people, specially blacks, deals with gang, violence, drugs, prison, etc., it is unfair that there are countries where prisons have a fully equipped kitchen when 60% of people in Brazil right now (actual data) has to choose what meal they're gonna have (breakfast, lunch OR dinner). If you guys have the spare money, you should stop creating more and more and more and more needs. Cause this is an infinite road to take. If you search for more needs, guess what? You're gonna find it. So we all have to ask ourselves when is it enough. When are we gonna say "alright, so I have home, food, shower, security. I'm good. Let's help other people now". So when is it going to be enough for "lucky" countries who acumulated wealth over the exploitation of the rest of the world? When will you stop and say "alright, I think overall our people are doing ok, now I can start reaching people from other countries and start to give it back". And I think this specially for countries with a history of colonialism, such as Portugal, Spain, England, Germany, etc. They have been able to grow and be rich on the sake of enslaving our people. Cause not just the consequences of this persists till this day, they actually continuously perpetrate what is now called neocolonialism, or imperialism, in various ways. Just to give an example, the STATE of Norway bought a brazilian public mining company because our State needed to pay debts. Every so called "3rd world country" (a name to make us believe that we're actually inferior, and just didn't work hard enough to be alongside the "1st world") knows public debt is a way to maintain us poor, selling our companies and letting you guys exploit us. This is not new, this known by anyone who has spent 30 minutes researching about it on google. And I'm a social scientist - so I know a little bit deeper than that. Anyway. I just think treating like a human being shouldn't be equal as giving rich-country-material-comfort. I think it would be an awesome lesson to teach prisoners: how to live with less material things, to focus on building connections and good relations, as opposed to throwing them money. It would build awareness in Sweden. On how you do not need more stuff. You don't. You really don't.
I am Swedish and i am in a church group for youths. One time when we met we made Easter eggs for the inmates at a custody nearby. I remember making special halal eggs for the Muslims without gelatine candy. Later I was told that the prisoners get better food than the school students and old people.
In France the prison are the worst, they are 130% overpopulated, some of them are 210%, the prison is like a hotel, you can do whatever you want, throw guns into the prison, the warrens will close their eyes on this because they are not enought payed to risk their lives

My class almost planned a heist after graduation because we new we would have it better art Sweden’s prison instead a life as a “photographer”..
The prison system does vary by state but I’m pretty sure none of them do as well as Sweden. But North Dakota is aiming to find out if Norway’s prison system will work do hopefully, that will spread to the rest of the United States.
It will probably start in smaller or blue states, then VERY slowly trickle over to red states
I'm glad Sweden is so peaceful. My best friend lives there.
Hello I am from Sweden. I am friends with People all around the world. I have no Idea where you’re from but almost every person im friends with knows Someone Thats from America, UK etc.
In America, you get caught selling drugs, you go to prison. In prison, you sell drugs 😂
It's not only sweeden that has this system, it's common around all of Scandinavian countries
and Nordic, which is broader than just Scandinavia ;)
Shut up and watch the video
Hey at least you’re not American here the military is where almost all are money goes
The fact that more money is used for prison & rehabilitation than school education tells you a lot about the education system too
I am Swedish and i am in a church group for youths.

America's prison system is a business, not a rehabilitation.

"While the two nations share vastly different demographics" wow, way to gloss over a huge contributing factor.
Sweden focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
They take crime as a failure of the state to help a person while the U.S. Focuses on punishment and incarceration mainly for money due to the for profit prison system
