Septic contractors also have highly mixed relationships with local inspectors as well. Our local inspector attempted to coerce us into using his buddy by slow rolling the admin (gubment) side of the process. When we switched to another contractor after seven weeks of no action, the inspector came out to the site, physically and intentionally broke piping at the tank and then said we failed inspection. We caught this on video, fortunately. The contractor made good on it and he also went to the state capitol in person to report the local inspector.

You want sunlight to fall on your drain field, the effluent gets wicked to the surface and evaporates, less going into to the ground water. I am in South Central Missouri South of West Plains. I have been a licensed septic installer for the state of Missouri for 16 years. And let me say there's a lot of shady contractors out there.
In the state of Missouri you must have at least three acres of land to install a septic tank with no license. Otherwise a licensed installer must be on site. And in many cities they will have their own building codes. And it's almost always more than the County's which generally have none.
Concrete tanks are better and generally cheaper than plastic. Plastic tends to collapse over the years. And then there's always the idiot who drives over it! Septic tank should be able to go decades with no trouble. If they're working properly they won't even need to be pumped. That is providing you follow some simple rules. Use Quick biodegradable toilet paper and don't flush diapers in the like. Wipe grease out of the pans and throw that away before washing them. The same with large food bits. It's best not to use a garbage disposal although most of that will float out of the septic tank if you have leach lines it will clog your leach lines given time. It's best just to use the strainer and no garbage disposal. Now soon as you take a dump in the septic tank the enzymes from a human body will continue to break down the solids. although you can buy enzymes to flush into the septic tank. It's unfortunate they had a bad installer. But not surprising although I generally Ace the test on recertification, many flunk it. I'm mostly retired now just working the ranch and garden Seasons coming up quick.

If you take a little bit of Black Water, and run 300 gallons of showers and dishwater and clothing washer water into it... you now have over 300 gallons of BLACK water... it seems ridiculous on its face. Septic systems leaching nasty water at the surface, contaminating ponds and watersheds and ALL THAT STUFF..... with THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of gallons of black water that never had to BE black water... if we never add Grey water to black, we'd have less than am 1/8th of the water being consumed total becoming dangerous Black Water... its like we create our own problems with these all - in - 1 septic setups.
I'm gonna try 2 separate pits. Grey, and black.
Outhouses are legal in my state, so having 2 toilets flowing ONLY their waste into a 5 ft deep hole in the ground, IS THE SAME THING.. ergo, it can't be THAT big a problem.

Only $6k?!? You got off very cheaply!
Mom was hit with a choice, back in about the late 1970s, from her city; mandated to connect w/city sewer, @ a cost close to $20000, or, she had to prove the old “septic” was still viable (really, a non-reinforced hole w/about 2’ of dirt over it’s wooden “lid”).
One of my bro’s dug up the old half-collapsed lid (must have been same one installed when the old place was built, probably back in about the 1940’s)… repaired it (replace the wood lid & rebury); also, leach-pipe diverted the washer, sinks, & tub out to the yard to help water plants, via a continuous leech-pipe through lots of planted areas…(saved many gallons off purchased city water needed to keep her jungle alive in the desert).
….then she had to demonstrate to the inspector that the full bathtub, full sinks, & the toilet would all drain well @ the same time (nope…the graywater irrigation was Not disclosed, but done right, & very appropriate to reuse graywater in a desert climate.
The legal loophole was an old law, & kept intact in the connection mandate, that guaranteed a variance & grandfathered-in old septics, as long as: it was the same septic the property had when the owner was notified to connect to city sewer; &, was still in usable condition.
Technically, all that leach-pit had to handle was the one toilet; it lasted at least another 30+ years, though, I think the new owner was required to connect…& by then, it cost more than mom’s fee, by a significant chunk of money more.
There really are better ways to handle waste!
The “Humanure Handbook” has been a classic for several decades.
The “Solviva” book, by Ana Eddy, about her Massachusetts farm, is even better.
And, there are some other twists to the idea, from numerous others.
There are pros & cons to most.
==> One big issue w/composting buckets/units, is, when it’s bad weather out, or, you are too sick to empty it, or, too old & decrepit to handle it…what will you do?
It is possible to modify systems (see: “Solviva) & come out with a system that essentially works same as a flush toilet. One key for that, is to add red wiggler worms to the composting container the effluent flushes into.
One composting unit that looked excellent, & was being built into houses in Africa, but then, it dropped off the map, years ago…that unit looked like a toilet indoors, but had a big Acme screw, which turned a bit each time the toilet seat lid was raised or closed, gradually moving the solids out under the wall, to a closed compost pit; liquids simply drained into the pit under a layer of leaves & dry grasses…solids landed on top of that, to compost.
There are big “bladders” to sit in a yard & all effluent is put into that to compost…toilet waste, kitchen scraps, yard waste, go into it, compost, generate methane which is piped to stove & heater & gas lights in the house, to use that (must put something like steel wool into the pipe, to catalyze-out the bad odor). . The composted solids break down, becoming great fertilizer for the plants.
Germ theory was flawed when it was made; yet most industries make products & processes that are based on that theory as-if it were true…it never was.
But now, it’s many zillion$$$$ industrie$ which fight hard to keep promoting bad science & bad products…many of which are killing us slowly or quickly.
We really need to correct the crooked path we’ve all been led down for many decades & longer. Our poo & pee ARE fertilizers. Bears poop in the woods, as do all creatures. .
The better path, would include: design composting systems that use worms to abate coliform bacteria & parasites, to create a lively finished compost for our yards/gardens, & use the liquids in the garden, also. All graywater should be reused at least once, if not more times (fresh use, then flush toilet, then liquids go through planters of water loving plants).
There is really no good excuse to keep polluting groundwater & sensitive wetlands, ocean, & other bodies of water, using sewer systems or even engineered septic systems. Engineered septics are very costly NIGHTmares!

@@Chimonger1 My parents only paid the 6,000 because my dad dug all the trenches and got everything shored up due to a steep incline. The other reason is the distance from the sewer line to the house. He purchased all of the pipes that met the requirements. The city only had to attach the pipes at the street level. Otherwise, it would have cost 5 figures.

And yes he put a slope under the tank to have it ready to let go the extra liquid correctly in the tank when full..he also put a extra pipe to let air in and gaz out … with a screen of course.

I'm with you, Doug, 100%! The way we continue to treat our bodily fluids is downright ridiculous. The Humanure book should be required reading. Besides, treating it the old way is filthy and a waste of water and soil nutrients.
Cleaning a toilet (water flush or cassette type) is disgusting work. Humanure is nutrient rich, doesn't stink (done right), doesn't require protective clothing to clean up problems, etc.
It is less expensive by the thousands of dollars. No recurring bills. Adds nutrients to the earth that we have systematically drained away. And it is fairly labor free.

It's always been about the local government power and money when it comes to septic tanks. Ours and 20 of our neighbors had to collapse our septic systems that were working just fine, to then be put on a "city sewer" that would grind up your waste and pump it to a lift station. The cost; $3200.00 to install the new system of which each homeowner had to pay out of pocket. This didn't include the cost of collapsing the old system and the final yard grading work. The kicker, $135.00 a month for sewer and we are responsible for that "city grinder pump" that each of us neighbors have. If it breaks or malfunctions, it's on the homeowner. So basically, local waste departments in Indiana bully people into their forced system and you go from $0 a month to flush a toilet to $135.00.
Needless to say, we sold and moved to our off grid cabin in the middle of nowhere and use the bucket system. Makes me smile knowing that I will not pay someone to poop and pee.

What they look for are multiple homes that are close in proximity. Some guy that's a quarter mile away from his next neighbor, they don't mess with. It's all about the money and nothing to do with the poor fish swimming in the creek...the same creek that has run off from pesticides that farmers spray along with livestock.
And that 135.00 a month, that goes up twice a year like a normal utility bill. And your system is never paid for. Because we asked if we could just write a check and be done with it. Waste Department shot that down. To much money to be made.

    • @davidmc8110
      @davidmc8110 2 роки тому

Well... there are some reasons why that composting idea isn't particularly the wisest choice; disease and parasites are a couple of them. If people take the extra care of the location of human waste, it is given a good length of time to decompose, the pile can get up to a good composting temperature during the summers, and one pile is left alone long enough while a new pile is used... People get a bit careless, and they may not be bothered too much when they are younger, that they notice, but then they get a little older, some weakness develops that makes them more susceptible, they think it has never affected them before... and that kind of stuff can take a person out.

My daughter moved back after she got out of the Marines and tried living there. (My kids hated living in the country) She didn't last a year.
I rented it out and had some good, but mostly bad renters who always trashed the property out.
I was ready to sell when some very good friends asked if we still had it available. It was such a disaster when they came to look at it. They said we will clean and fix it up. They have been here 1 yr and 2 months and have done so much work. There is a 5000 gal metal tank set up to catch water off the garage to use for gardening. They went to look inside it yesterday and it is full of trash. 🤬 I am so angry that anyone would do this. We will overcome this too.
So happy for your family, country life is the best.🙂

Built a new house and had the septic professionally installed. 30 days later water was backing up into the house. Called the septic company and they came out and diagnosed the problem and said the septic failed and I would have to pay for a new one to be installed. I said no way! I called the company again, talked with someone who had a brain. They came out and diagnosed it correctly: The house had settled and the main drain was pushing up against a baffle in the tank. Here in WV, I don't live off grid but I do live in the country without a "commercial" sewer system. We use septic tanks with leech fields and I have never seen a problem in my 55+ years. That being said, you are correct, it is so important to have it installed correctly. The tank size should be a minimum of 300 gallons per bedroom (900 gallon for my house) and a leech bed that is perfectly level and is the correct size as determined by the perk test. I don't know of anyone around me that has to do any more maintenance than flush bacteria down a commode a couple times per year. You are so correct in saying that there are many options. Whatever way a person chooses, the most important thing is to install it correctly the first time. I'm so sorry for your daughter's difficulty, but what's life without a few challenges to overcome? Peace be with you my friend.
