Crazy How These Stars Are Placed in Shapes For us to See from earth, But in Reality, They're not even Close to each Other 💯🙏🏽🕊❤️

This video was very clear and crisp, in communication about the orientation of these two constellations (asterisms). Exactly what I was looking for.

Thank you for a great video! From where I live, due to light pollution, I can really only see the seven stars of the Big Dipper, the "feet" of Ursa Major, and the stars Polaris, Kochab, and Pherkad of Ursa Minor. However, when I went to a dark sky reserve last year summer for the first time, I really was amazed at everything! Seeing all the summer constellations as well as seeing the full extent of the little dipper was a really cool experience for me.

I am fairly new to this channel. I allways loved to look at the sky at night and wondered how people can see star constellations. Thanks to your channel now I can see, Orion, Taurus, Gemini Canis minoris, Canis majoris and Auriga in the winter night sky. Thank you so much for your amazing videos. Love from Germany.

Thank you for a great video. I just got back into astronomy about a year ago and your videos are great little refresher courses as well as a source of things I didn't know. I hope you keep doing these videos.

I am in bortle 5 and I cannot find the big dipper, hence cant find the little dipper, hence cant find the north star, hence cant find the green comet. sigh I am in northern California and know to look due north but not sure how high up it is in the sky Feb 1, 2023. Someone said it is lower in winter and another said try 60 degrees up (6 fists) from horizon??

Here in San Diego Im seeing the little dipper on the northwest. Its more like 75-80 degrees relative to our horizon

@@ElRayDelRio Yup, I got some bad info. I finally found the comet and it was straight up by Capella. I was never looking straight up before. I finally got my comet photo. Thx

Yes, unless I go out to dark Bortle 2 skies I cannot see those Little Dipper stars. Also the second star in the Big Dipper's handle is two stars easily seen with binoculars or if you have dark skies and good eyesight you can see Mizar and Alcor, they are binaries.

  • @Astronurd

If you are bothered by light pollution then a pair of binoculars will bring the little dipper into view and show you the direction it's orientated.

Last night I think I saw e Big Dipper for the first time in my life (40+). Have I never looked at the sky before, or what? I'm in London, UK, and it was almost overhead (middle of May), as it's so big! I couldn't find Polaris or the Little Dipper, but I'll try again tonight.
It's like that question: if a colourblind scientist studies everything there is to know about colour but never sees colour until much later on when medicine can provide a treatment, when she finally sees colour does she learn something new?

    Great job,
I see timelapses of stars circulating around Polaris. Do you know how long it would take for Big Dipper(for example) to make a 360 degrees around Polaris? Thanks!

It's about 23 hours and 56 minutes, the time it takes Earth to spin once relative to the stars. It's a bit less than 24 hours because the Earth moves on slightly in its orbit and has to rotate a bit more for the Sun to appear to make a full revolution in the sky.

Great video but the Big dipper has an 8th star 🌟 that's why it's called the forgotten one 😉
It's the Alcor and it's where I came from in 1972

Yes but I'm more interested in the stars? How far are they? They must be fairly big stars to see them so bright. Maybe a topic for another video. Thank you for the video fellow science nerd, 😉
