Dropping Into The Largest Blue Nose Mine

- This sprawling abandoned mine has captivated many historians, photographers and mine explorers over the years. We were no exception and eventually made the pilgrimage out to its remote location as well... Perhaps needless to say, we were not disappointed by this mine or its setting.
The ore body at this site was discovered and developed in the 1930s and production of the industrial metals at this mine peaked during the Cold War period.
Some may wonder why I was not as aggressive as normal in chasing down some of the winzes, raises and blocked drifts that we came across... The reason is simple. We were not the first explorers here and I had detailed reports from some of the prior visitors. In other words, I knew which areas had been covered and had a fairly good idea of where things ended up. You'll see me getting aggressive with the exploring into the unknown or virgin mines, but I focus more on just enjoying the known mines like this one (unless there are unexplored areas within it).

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever.
I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

Red Diamond product line is still in production at Austin Powder Company. I worked for them for many years in the 90s.
Austin is the Kmart of the shot service and blasting products.
I think these mines that push to what we consider to be "Modern" times, without the workings being all that modern, are fascinating, you see equipment you know is much newer, in mines built to much older standards.
70s and 80s mines are my favorites! Plenty of large modern equipment and electrical hardware, but rail and timbering were still in common use. It makes for very visually interesting mines.
@@Porty1119 This line was definitely in function during the eighties, lots eighties evidence here!
Love the handy work, its not often you see a mine well propped up like that, cribbing was excellent. - Thank you for taking the time to document and share.
I have to say this was one of the more captivating tours I've seen in a long time! The timbering, graffiti, artifacts, and equipment was absolutely exquisite! Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
for sure !
Wow! A lot of drifting there, and presumably just as much down lower!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
For a relatively modern mine it was very cool... Thanks! 😊
Hi Justin, I wonder if that skip rail/ladder were all part of an emergency exit at 12:52 as it did say Exit also ??
Those grizzly holes were massive so they must have been shifting a lot of bigger ore pieces around.
Thank you for sharing, much love. xx ❤
It still amazes me to see the amount of precise engineering, design, labor and the size of the construction underground that rivals the building of full size skyscrapers and huge bridges.
Weird question do you guys have like someone up top or like standing by on a radio incase of a cave in
Wish someone years ago had filmed the crews actually setting the cribbing plus how long it would take to do sections. BTW, you've done an excellent job of video taping and giving a running discussion of this mine. I noticed you don't have any repeating expressions in your talking. Very refreshing.
Man, what an amazing mine...!!!
Awesome mine, nice to see all the mine carts/artifacts that are still in it.
Have a great weekend!!!!! HEAVYPANS!
Absolutely awesome mine, so much to see it amazes me how good the timber looks after all those years. Looks like new some of it. I just love looking at the rails & tunnels & the ladders up & down the shafts , need nerves of steel to climb those. Stunning mine enjoyed the tour. 😊👍
Great mine explore Justin!
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
Austin Powder Co. Was located in Glen Willow Ohio. It was turned into a land fill that has been closed and slowly developed into a business area and natural park reserve.
It's located less than two miles from where I'm at. Thanks for another great! Mine and explore.
Thanks! Enjoyed trailing along behind ya.
Ever wonder if you take out all the post and beams and planks and laid on the ground end to end, how far it would reach
Always great Justin. Dropping a video tonight or tomorrow on my channel with an abandoned anthracite coal mine 2 compartment haulage shaft (not backfilled 100% intact), 2 GE mine locomotives and 3 hoists, feel free to check that out once it's up. Have a good Thanksgiving!
Wow, that mine you described sounds incredible!
@@TVRExploring thanks. This is my first video of exploring I edited in 19 years of exploring...haha
@@TVRExploring uploaded my shaft video on my channel. If you're bored or have free time you should check it out. In the comments, I time stamped some shaft shots! You never see intact coal vertical shafts.
Unique find! Thanks for taking us along to see the features
What a extensive mine with great Timberwork and the Technik still inside.
What did they mine there and when does she quit working
Thank you for taking me with you
Take care greetings from Germay
Yours Frank Galetzka
Another good explore , looks like a tram /locomotive mine , at least the last operation was ! 😎
That is one great mine there Justin. shame about that shaft plugging itself like that.
Austin Powder also had a small distbution center near me in Masontown PA up until the 1980s
what a great looking mine
Thank you Justin. I am stuck isolating in my room at home with COVID-19 so this was certainly a welcome treat. I never wanted to be anywhere else but home so badly in my life and this took me there. Stay safe and stay healthy my friend.
Apart from the dust a lot of it looks like it might have stopped working the day before you went it, its kind of eerie in a way...at 17.09 I wonder what the silver thing is sitting on the cribbing? ...its huge.
Tons of beautiful timbering! This much timbering translates to instability. A big mine for sure! Nice artifacts as well! I'll bet there are miners alive to this day that worked this mine. Nice capture of it Justin!
Thanks for another great video
Good afternoon from Southeast South Dakota
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
have you ever been in a mine that has not been recorded
You have to wonder how they got all that equipment down there. A lot of work!
Great explore! Glad you're still at it!
The mine is impressive, but the carpentry is incredible. Can't imagine trying to haul all that lumber underground, must have taken eons
I do want to see hours of the footage ,thank you so very much for another great explore 😊
Man there was some pretty amazing infrastructure and carpentry.
Nice Justin mine Cat heaven!!!; )
incredible!!! lot of $$$ and development!!! ouch !!! must of been some great ore bodies associated with this mine!!!
thanks for the video…Happy Thanksgiving !!!
This mine showed itself off to you for sure like loads of ore cars and shafts and tones of wood everywhere you go , i was like shocked to how big the mine was cause i bet there was like 10000 miners working in there at the time or less who knows but i hope that mine gets used again cause most places in there looked fairly new.
very cool mine.
That was a very interesting big one wow, great timber works and a lot of stuff too see, thank for a fascinating explore, loved watching it Justin.
There must be some hoists up on the surface , is there going to be more on this mine ?
Wow, what a great mine.
Nice big mine that looked quite tidy to explore. Enjoyed that very much!
It looks like a lot of new electrical is installed...
I agree and vict pipe clamps also
I’m thinking 80/90
What were they digging after? And thank you for the video happy thanks giving
Grande, cool woodworkings
I am shocked, its not been stripped for metals, i see someone has done copper wire stealing , dang drug heads
G-day Justin hows things buddy I mentioned you to a bloke in your part of the world you may all ready have heard of him Matts of road a friend of his has a mine on private property I suggested you if thats ok anyway he's based in Hurricain but the mine is your neck off the woods.Anyhow if he gets in touch you will know what its about I thought since you guys have all the right gear or that sort of thing you might be interested. Cheers mate I hope you have a Merry Christmas and all the best to you and the guys for the New Year I hope its a good one for you.👍
It always amazes me how much wood and steel that's in these mines and the guys that drug all of if into the mines. And also ,seems like most of these mines have flat floors in their haulage areas.
Nice job guys
wow just amazing love to explore 1 day
I don't know how you can possibly walk past a mine cart without trying to give it a push. 😁
Great upload hello from Australia opal miner here
much more modern than the usual you visit- even electricity !
Climbing those old manway ladders is madness. Out West you have dry wood...here it is all mush from the water as you'd imagine.
just looked up Austin Powder company it looks like a good company and this is a great mine it looks like they closed it for the holidays vary cool thou to see it in tghis great condition !
Impressive mate. Looks like newer drives have blasted through much older workings? Some electrical looked to be 1960's or 70's.
Absolutely lov your videos. . .
Looks like it’s was worked into the late 80’s or early 90’s.
@15:12 " LUNCH ROOM HOURS 12:00 12:30 ". And Red Diamond was a Div of the Austin Powder Co. 1833 Akron, Oh.
There still open . @23:10 the Cigars are still around too, St. Louis.
What precautions do you take to avoid any gas pockets, fungi or mold?
Sure did, as usual. Thanks Justin. Stay safe guys!
The way it was left, it looks like they thought they might start it up again. Looked like most of the electric was about turn on ready.
@25:06 wonder what is black, red, yellow, green cables or ropes?
This mine is nicer than my basement.
Some of the cribbing is uniform and some is hastily done. I'm aware of through family connections of cases bad ground incidents in the mining district some of which resulted areas being sealed due to fatalities or worker safety.
I bet there are a lot of interesting and frightening secrets beyond the inaccessible parts of this mine.
Long love the ore car
I think the Cowboy and girl were the "Hill's". Specifically Hank and Peggy....
That’s a big mine and lots of money went into it and frame working plus electricity
The Tuscanello cigars are still being made by Avanti Cigar company in Scranton Pa. I smoke them.
Wonder how many miles of tunnel and stopes are located here? Did you have tunnel maps before exploring this one?
is it possible to fly a micro drone mith hd camera through mines and map the entire rout??
I think you were in a different mine at the end.
Hi Guys, there is more than one Blue Nose mine , where is this one?
12:03 um is that a bird wing? was it? heh i hope that these animals rest in peace
With two pipes was one water and other air psi ???
Who ended up with the blue nose? The grizzlies? The only reason that mine phone was still down there is because Frank wasn't there yet! lol!
Be great if you could explain the type of rock you are witnessing.
"Keep"
"Out"
"Danger"
Why all the quotations on the sign?
Thanks :)
mmm rabbit jerky
✨😎
Do you ever find lost veins of gold
Any exposed ore would have been removed while the mine was in service
7:45 I heavily disagree. The blocked off passage saying KEEP OUT was far more interesting than an hallway with just plain ore chutes.
One I've only seen in this video and the other is shown in every upload. Seriously ore chutes? Even that large minecart was more interesting
2nd
I don't know how you can possibly walk past a mine cart without trying to give it a push. 😁
