Out of curiosity Jason, can you recommend any good books I should pick up on mentalism? I've been hearing thirteen rules is supposed to be pretty comprehensive. The first part, was easy to do: Simon's pic was on the back of every "color card". Heidi's pic was on the back of every "symbol card". Need I go on?
I do find this unfair for the other contestant cause Shin helped him to make the stadium roar the loudest hehehe...

I love how Shin Lim is always so humble and willing to help out other magicians.
Shin Lim did it as a favor cause Marc Spelman asked him to be part of the collaboration. Shin Lim and Colin Cloud has been doing magic tours together since after their AGT appearances.
He might be nice, but there's something for him too. Being in a show with that great audience and a video with million views helps get your name back in the trending.

When he waves his hands over Howie's picture, is Shin Lim doing it: that's why it worked.
I was about to say the same thing, after the switch behind the board, when you know its shin lim you notice little things shin lim always do when he points out things and all and you can actually almost recognize him

It's probably been mentioned, but at 5:25 when he twirls the board, he goes behind it. That has to be when they switched spots. And since Shin was back there, he could have easily manipulated the cards with their faces. Since they are both wearing all black, it possibly blended in with the background. My thoughts

Come on.... all colors had Simon's pic, all symbols had Heidi, etc. when he rotated the board around, that's when the switch happened. The board was a dark plexiglass. Please note that while Shin Lim was behind the board until the switch, he had to take off exactly the same spots that X did. Pretty simple if you ask me. (or not).
Obviously this guy knows that aswell. He is just not (unlike you) ruining the magic for other people.
Also there is still the question on how he knew/made sure Howie would pick Shin Lim in that exact moment....
HOLY SH!T! Okay, I don't usually get caught up in these acts, but THAT was amazing.
The first three judges are easy : Each judge chose from a different category of thing - letters, numbers, emojis -- so EVERY emoji had that chick's pic, EVERY colour had Simon, etc. Easy peasy.
Question: how do you win AGT Champions 2020?

Actually makes the backdrop content that bit better... often find myself saying 'aw yeah..of course' cause often things can go over your head (ours..the viewer)

I think all the judges had a free choice within the confines of their limited selection. Each judge was told to choose a type of card, a color for Simon, a symbol for Heidi, a letter for Alicia, and a number for Howie. Each of the choices for each of the judges all had their faces on the backs of them, except Howie's which all had 'Shin Lim' on the back. The cards on the back (the ones with the acts on it) were not the same cards and were removed by Shin Lim who was behind the choice board. The switch happened when he turned the board. The choice of Shin Lim by Howie was a given being that the chances that his favorite act would not likely change over the course of the season. In fact, I imagine that the whole idea of this act probably came from Marc Spelmann seeing an interview where Howie said his favorite act was Shin Lim.
The magic was very simple and needed no analysis. What was phenomenal was the presentation, which has a positive effect on the whole show.

Great video as always, and this performance was amazing.
I also missed the swap at first (it's exactly where you'd expect, though.) I assumed the main part of the trick had to do with when he took off the cards (his back is turned, he could be doing anything back there,) but where he places them is a good idea too.
The fable seems straightforward enough, I didn't really get anything out of it that you didn't mention.
And I'm waiting to watch your Witcher videos until I watch it myself. I keep hearing good things about it and want to go in fresh.
Awesome, glad to hear you'll check them out later... I feel like they are getting better. The first video is a little long-winded... but this 3rd one I released yesterday... it's more how it should be! These videos are not getting a lot of views... but I feel I should continue and finish making them so I don't give up too quickly. Maybe after that try a movie review or two... (obviously starting with magic-related ones first).

Yes , Marc done very well all performance, also had one that judges not like one of his showed. I think he has the mix os mystery combined w some mentalist and magician-illusinist .He is fantastic!!

yeah it's true... AGT UA-cam channel did it even worse! Their video is titled something like: "Shin Lim IS MAGICIAN X???" At least on mine... I tried to make it a little more subtle. ;)
I love that this means the cool slight of hand trick on the photo was the SOH king, Shin Kim, and not actually the magician being judged 😅 clever way to have help on an area that might not be his expertise?
You don't catch on the first time you see it. You get caught up in the performance . Then when you go back and see it again then you see when every thing happen or change. I mean Slight of hands and other clues. I love both of this guys. Who won American AGT or it's not over yet.

It was a very good act, my concerns are, after this can he step to the next level, can he do a better act?
And the other thing is, Shin Lim stole the show definitely.
I caught the switch the first time. There was something odd about the way he grabbed the board. Then he came out the otherside thinner....The "Magician X" starts to move his hands in such a way i was thinking"he reminds me of Shin Lim" Howie must have thought so too as he picked Shin Lim likely by the subconscious reminder of Shins movements. This was my Favorite act of all the champions both years. Ive been a huge fan of Shin since I saw his first performance on P&T Fool Us. Marc is a great magician as well.

lol..... :) Thanks! I'm laughing about the apple stock thing .... well pretty much investing in ANY stock at this time will cause people to lose money thanks for our friend the coronavirus ;) BUT... I am planning to invest what I've got and wait a couple years for the economy to recover. Shin's back!
Again, that was an amazing performance by Marc Spelmann. I think that it was almost impossible to see the switch. You only see the swith, if you watch the part 5:13 - 5:18 with 0.25 speed: Marc's shoes went behind the black curtain and Shin's shoes walked out the black curtain.
Aesop: this story reminds me of the story "The oxen and the axletrees". The moral is: consider the whole picture before complaining.

I have two observations. one the board with the icons on it read choose lim if you look and Howie was always pro shin lim so I knew he would pick him as his favorite. two - there Is a significant weight difference between lim and Spellman so when the switch happened, it is kind of obvious how thinner he got, still an amazing performance

The very first time i saw this i was wondering how Marc Spellman became that much slimmer, but when Howie’s face changed into Shin Lim (don’t know how that is done) i knew why and i even knew when the switcheroo had happend.

Not only does the board say "Choose Lim" but on the backside when all the names of acts featured on the show, it also features Tyra Banks, Jay Leno, and Terry Crews, all clustered together on the bottom, which were not acts, but featured in Shin Lim's previous acts
These are just easter eggs for people to spot. This has nothing to do with the technique. Subliminal suggestion doesn't work reliably enough to be the method.

I didn't see the switch, I just assumed it happened when he walked behind the board to rotate it. It was the obvious timing. I did enjoy the shock on the judges' faces, though.
As far as I read it was kept a secret from the producers. He would actually have an assistant along backstage that was talking For him at meeting and set ups.if I am remembering correctly.
Notice all chose a different style card, = color, symbol, letter & number. For the first three judges, could their faces have been behind all cards in their category? How Shin Lim was his favorite, hmmm. Maybe a producer had informally asked him in preparation weeks ago? Didn't notice the switch with Shin Lim.
I suspect the celeb photos were on the board with a black foreground. When the card went in front (magnets?), they latched on and when spun, had the celeb photo. The Shin Lin was the one thing I can't figure since I can't guarantee shin lin would have been his choice. I got it all except the shin lin, but a very nice presentation.

They switched when Mark was turning the board to show all sorts of random options. Mark went backside to turn and Shin came out from the other side.
Magic 101 when he turned the large multi signs they switched positions. So that means when shin lin was behind the large sign he put on each of the called cards a foto of the person. Magic 101 is easy to debunk if u know how it was set up.
The producers of the show _had_ to know who was behind the mask. Marc has talked about this in interviews. The producers knew it was him, but they had agreed to keep his secret until the big reveal

I think i figured out how the 2 magicians switched.. By their built.. When he tilt the board 360 degrees ..their built changes..it is noticeable thru their stomach..😁😁
Hared the dumb touch magic acts I've seen . That one and the one with the weird doll sure you remember Italian guy. The first one with the Rubik's Cube was absolutely amazing. And I like how he died the Rubik's Cube baby stuff to his original X Act later continututy was key to that success and reveal
You are certainly not a bad magician if you can make Shin Lim appear as part of your act.

I think for the first bit he simply had the pictures lined up on the desk with a sticky backing that was the same as the material on the table so he just lined up whatever they picked with the photos. It was a wowing performance not a fooling one
There should be a modern book of Aesop's fables. One that includes how to navigate the digital age.
I believe that he used black art so the pictures of the judges and the name Shin Lim were already on the black display board and were turned around with the judges choices. This would make sense as Shin Lim uses black art in his routines and probably helped Marc Spelmann put this routine together.
Certainly possible, but then there would've been no reason for him to have all the judges pick out from different sets of cards.

The performance was amazing! So far as the sheep and dog story, it reminds me of America, and when people who are scared of guns complain that they need more "gun free" zones or to "ban guns". They think the dogs (armed citizens) are not doing anything because most of the time they don't need to shoot in self defense. But without them, the wolves (armed bad guys who don't follow laws) would have free reign. You don't solve the problem of gun violence by simply outlawing guns, it would be like getting rid of all of the dogs protecting the sheep, without any way to actually make sure the wolves and other threats are also gone.

There is only one problem with your analogy: empirical facts contradict just about every part of it when it comes to guns. If outlawing guns, or heavily restricting them at least, didn't work to prevent gun violence, how come every country with stricter gun laws than the U.S. has nowhere near as much gun violence as the States does, and significantly fewer violent homicides in general as well?

We on the Left most definitely do *not* want to eradicate Border Patrol. ICE we do want to get rid of, mostly because it is a completely unaccountable paramilitary organization of nothing but thugs whose primary purpose seems to be to enforce (or prepare for enforcing, and enforce once it's actually there) the Fascist State the Republican Party has been so hard at work building for the past 50-odd years -- but in part it's also because ICE was only created in the early-2000s (2003, I think?), and the U.S. was doing fine without it for the ~230 years it existed before that.
The fact that we all can do perfectly fine without it is also why at least a sizeable portion also want to get rid of the Department of Homeland Security, along with the Patriot Act that basically created both the DHS and ICE.
@@AhsimNreiziev The problem I see with that, though I do agree that we need to take significant steps to curb gun violence, is that we likely have far too many weapons already in circulation. It would be something that has to happen over a long period of time, so we can slow the introduction of new guns and work on getting the existing ones out. If we'd restricted them more for the start, it would be a lot easier.
Break down:
1. Panel's back is a monitor that set up to reflect the images from the other side so that said all colors simons face, all symbols are heidi, numbers are alicia.
2. the switch obviously happened during the panel rotation where Marc go around with the panel which is not necessary cause he can just rotate the panel from where he is standing.
3. for howie its mentalism.
For number 1, they spun the board and not all of the colors were simon, etc. Also, the letters on the board spell choose lim

Also they have a completely different physique and way of moving. If you pay attention to body language it is not hard to notice.

Jason I guess that you've missed part of the original video (or you have cut yourself to save time in this reaction), because Marc Spelman at the end (after Shin Lim apparence) explains why he was sure about the single choice of every judge, showing previous videos on which they had chosen the same "type" (color yellow, the butterfly and the number). So the act was really more epic, and only at that moment Alicia reveals to have chills on her body.

The only reason to have clips at the bottom of the cards is to hold two cards together. One facing back with different acts. The front cards: each color has Simon's picture on the back. Each symbol has Heidi's picture on the back etc. Number 18 card has no bottom clip. Visually it removes it from the chooses. On a grid, the bottom right is practically guaranteed to not be chosen. I know you can read the top line and the third line.

There was one thing...the switch was obvious. And....hmm. V unbeatable was Marks second choice. 28 people? It was a great trick! And shin, to participate in this was awesome. Great great!!!!!! Love it! "The black board was wrote on by a lin". Pretty sure that's how it's done....
Got it. Shim lin was hiding behind the board. They switched when when he walked round the back as he spun it. Mark is clearly heavier built than shim and has way thicker legs. As for the cards. Magnetised. Didnt matter which they picked as when they were placed on the stand they picked up the photos which were already sat in order with their black backs towards the audience. Black cards on a black background. The trick only works if judges chose in order they sat.
I never occurred to me that a Magician switch from the back side of the board to have a choice of people.
My problem with trying to figure this trick out is trying to remember if its "SHIM Lin" or Shin Lim.
I'm pretty sure I got how all of it was done.
