Ever wondered how a kraken would impact a fantasy city's fishing and trade routes? What parallels can we draw between kraken attacks and the Allied response to German U-Boats in WWII? Could convoys, naval escorts, and enchanted ballista be enough to counter such a monstrous threat? How might coastal economies adapt and survive in the face of such terror? Join Baron de Ropp as he delves into the Geopolitics of the Kraken and explores the potential strategies and repercussions of confronting a kraken.

Lauded as a hero after performing some high-profile, exciting deed that lead to being seen as a savior to the local economy and the working class, all while knowing your actions also allow the merchant fleets to keep their cargo holds and coffers full, there's only one thing to do next:
    Run for Public Office.

A more interesting question, to my mind, is why the kraken (INT: 22, WIS: 18, CHR: 20) wants to destroy merchant ships? Such a beast could be a king-maker, siding with one side or another in any naval conflict. Or it could just roam from coast-to-coast demanding tribute. But that's penny-ante stuff. This is a beast bred to fight GODS! It's going to make literal, economic, and political waves wherever it goes, and if it wants something, everyone's gonna know about it.
So what the heck would such a monstrosity desire?

That's a *really* good question. Are we talking about *a* kraken or *the* Kraken? A unique creature with an entirely superhuman mind must surely have something to do other than commerce raiding. Might just be a hobby I suppose.

  • @drewforchic9083

I think that honestly, since it slumbers for most of the time, then wakes up, summons giant storms with its mere presence, and advances upon a city, smashing up the docks and flooding the rest of it before retreating into the ocean to do it again with little to no warning in a few months/years, a local kraken could also be compared to living somewhere with hurricanes.
You'd probably want to learn its off seasons and work around those, build levies and storm shelters... treat it as a force of nature to survive just as much as a monster to fight.

    Several historical inaccuracies:
    - It was not only the British navy that combatted the U-boat threat but the American, Canadian and later Brazilian navies as well.
    - World Trade Organization, not World Trade Order. ;)
    - All belligerents' navies other than the U.S. were in tatters by the end of WW2? Canadian navy became the 4th largest in the world by the end of the war, British navy was almost double in terms of tonnage than what it started with, and the Soviet navy - though battered, was largely intact.
But back to the Kraken, I think you miss a few very important things about the Kraken in D&D (3rd edition onward specifically). Not only is it intelligent, not only is it a powerful caster, it can also control the weather itself AND command the hearts and minds of men! It does not NEED to hunt the convoy when it can summon a storm (at night for example), dash every ship against the rocks and then feast and loot at will. Or, it can work through its proxies, placing its cultist followers into key positions to either sabotage the convoys or take control of the governments of coastal cities. And finally, you know what would be WAY cheaper than outfitting an entire fleet, marines, wizards, griffin riders, etc. for any polity? Negotiating with the kraken!

The world of One Piece offers a vision of how such world could look like:
With most of the world underwater and huge water beasts restricting travel, most people spend their whole lives on their home island, each island their own country, all under a single World Government and their strongest tool- Navy, which has a huge armada of ships that are masked from sea beasts and posses firepower to potentially destroy entire countries, but also keeping an image of peacekeepers and heroes.

The whale Porphyrios plagued the Byzantine empire during the time of Justinian and attempts to rid the whale proved ineffective. He attacked local ships and even Byzantium itself from time to time over the course of 50 years. It is said the whale beached itself when trying to chase a pod of dolphins.

Not to mention that once the humanoid civs figure out how to easily take them out, they'd be regularly hunted for meat and glory I'd think.
However this doesn't apply to the Cthuluian type of Kraken who are primordials amongst the aboleth with almost god like powers such as the ability to alter the weather and create mass hysteria while also spawning sahuagin from an alternative deep ocean plane. Tho I like to think that these types aren't from Toril and that the standard block stat version are the lesser krakens who've been left behind.

What about the economy surrounding the presence of the Kraken? With the Kraken being a threat, there would be an entire economy presence around the scarcity of goods due to the Kraken, high pay for sailors willing to sale the dangerous seas and weaponry and defenses setup to defend against the threat. These markets would be upheaved instantly as goods that used to be a high price due to scarcity or just the danger of shipping them across dangerous seas, would take dive to the influx of availability. Would we see a sort of bubble burst in certain markets that thrived on this on going threat? Could we see new threats arise that were previously kept at bay due to this threat?
