- Well, it took me a few months longer than expected but I finally finished my first three Danmei and wow, I enjoyed myself!
I'm definitely a newbie to the genre but so far I'm enjoying it! Hit me below with your recommendations!

@@SarahEverMotionBooksThat's great! It's actually her most popular story which has a lot of adaptations. I'm currently watching the live action adaptation with my parents and then plan on watching the donghua with them as well. I do recommend those two if you don't want to get hit with the harsh realities of the books first!😂
I'm so happy that you like erha (husky and his white cat shizun). The author's name translates to Meatbun Doesn't Eat Meat, so the fandom affectionately calls her Meatbun. Her humor is amazing. When she first released the chapters online she would include a little mini theatre after each chapter, and they're hilarious. I wish they had kept them in the english version, but maybe they felt it would break the flow too much.
Not sure if you've started reading volume 3 since it just came out, but if you haven't started yet big trigger warning for the first chapter (explicit). I can't remember for the rest. It's been a few years since I read it. (It's longer than the bible haha).
For MXTX novels MDZS (grandmaster of demonic cultivation) is my favorite danmei. The timeline can be hard to follow, but I love the themes, and I think it has the greatest cast of side characters I've ever read (One of whom has has a firm grip on my heart for the past 3-4 years and is my favorite character of all time). If you ever do a review on mdzs, I'd love to hear your opinions on the characters, since many are quite controversial, and not many people have only read the novel. Most of the adaptations made some characters more "good" and some more "evil," so it's a different experience.

Im not gonna lie, your take on tgcf (Heaven Official's Blessing) was almost funny cause as a matter of fact I have cried and sobbed more times than I can count on one hand from it 😀😭
and your reaction to 2ha is valid, the only reason the first time I read it the cliffhanger didn't hurt was cause I bought the first 3 all at once and I was reading each all at once at night which all ended in all nighters, no sleep...
Oh my god, I've heard a few people say that since I read that one and I'm low key terrified of what's in store 😆
I am huge fan of danmei and if ur interested there is the wlw counterpart called Baihe. A danmei I reccomend is Qiang Jin Jiu and to complete the MXTX trio there's Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation.

@@SarahEverMotionBooks qiang jin jiu is incredible. if you want to start with baihe, "clear and muddy loss of love" by pdl is a good place to start. qiang jin jiu is a danmei, but it's author t97 is coming up with a baihe novel in the future as well, so that's something to look forward to :)
Husky and his white cat shizun is literally my comfort book that brings me so much pain.. currently rereading its its so damn good and well written
I began my danmei journey with Scum villian as well. Jumped right into 2ha (The husky and his white cat shizun). It was a giant jump, but it became my favorite danmei, I dare to say my favorite book series. Glad to hear that you enjoyed it, too. Chu Wanning must be protected at all costs 😊

I love danmei and I've read A LOT of it! Most of them play around with all kinds of genres and tropes so you can almost always find at least one novel that you like. My recommendations for modern danmeis are "Little Mushroom" by Shisi (dystopian sci-fi) publ. by Peach Blossom House and "Mo Du/Silent Reading" by Priest (Police/Crime) not officially licensed in English yet, but you can find fan-translations online. For historical fiction I would recommend "Qiang Jin Jiu" by Tang Jiuqing (it's also not officially licensed in English yet). And if you're into live-action dramas, there is my personal favourites "The Untamed" (based on "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" by MXTX, which I also recommend reading) and "Justice in the Dark" (based on "Silent Reading").
Someone else mentioned Peach Blossom House! I will have to go through their catalogue again and pick up some of their work, Little Mushroom I think I saw on there before and it intrigued me! 😁
I just finished Chaos of Stars, and even though it had a bit of a slowish start I liked Priest's writing so I'll definitely look for Silent Reading.
I haven't tried the live-action dramas, but I'm super curious. Maybe once I've read Grandmaster I'll watch the show too 🤔
The only danmei I have read are little mushroom and tgcf. Mainly because I love sci-fi (a gl sci fi I also adore is Gideon the 9th), and stories rooted in religion. The author of tgcf is absolutely hilarious…but knows exactly how to rip your heart out…and maybe your head.
Hi! I’m new to your channel. This video was so fun to watch! I just recently got into danmei because of the donghua for Heaven Official’s Blessing and MDZS. Just bought the first novels for both and am really excited to start reading! I’ve also heard great things about 2ha and Golden Terrace so I am looking forward to reading those after ❤

I fell in the Danmei rabbit whole watching the untamed live action series, read the books Grandmaster of Demonic cultivation series and just love it. I have not read anything yet but have almost all the other MXTX books. I think I read Scum villain's first because after Grandmaster of Demonic cultivation I nead something less heavy. Was afraid starting Husky and his white cat shizun, but your talk helped me get over my fear

About the danmei you read;
Heavens official blessing will have 8 volumes in total and is personally my favourite of the trio you read.
do want to warn you as you talked about what was a main trigger you for is in husky and his white cat is even more prevalent in the other work "remnants of filth" of the same author so i do wanna warn you for that if you where intrested in reading that.
As for recommandations we're recently seeing more and more danmei getting official english translation and since they're translating the biggest names first they're all really good so depnding on your triggers you can basically check out all the officially translated work!

I've been trying to keep up on the announcements on the new things coming and there are some very exciting ones I've got on my radar. I have caught up on Husky and I'm still really enjoying that one!

I also want to add to this convo that Yuwu or remnants of filth is very angsty and depressing. I will always warn everyone of this if they ever want to read it, yes it has triggering stuff too like the original commenter mentioned but it’s just very depressing.
I recommend reading it when you’re in a good headspace. Nothing good happens, the entire book is just pain and if you’re going in expecting light hearted romance it’ll dampen your experience. Especially when you’re already in a bad place mentally. I wasn’t personally and I don’t ever get effected by triggers etc but even for me it put me in a bit of a funk and you just have to take breaks from the pain sometimes.
That being said, its a great novel even with all the pain. Meatbun doesn’t really miss with her novels but I just wanted to warn you!
Found your channel by accident but I love it! Just so you're aware, Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Offcials Blessing) currently has a donghua (chinese animation) with 1 season, and a manhua (online Chinese comic) that is actively being updated. The White Husky and his Cat Shizun has a live action called 'Immortality' that will be released soon, as well as a manhua that is still also being actively updated aswell I believe. Then Scum Villain's Self Saving System has a season of a donghua out. Then a book you don't have from the same genre which is called 'Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation' has a fully completed live action called 'The Untamed,' a fully finished donghua (Mo dao Zu shi,) as well as a fully finished manhua (under the same name of grandmaster of demonic cultivation or mo dao zu shi.) If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! I've been in this community (mainly the novels from MXTX) for 2 years now.

If you liked Scum Villain, I suggest reading Transmigrating into a Mob Character to Rehabilitate the Villain Plan. I honestly like the story more, the problem is that it is only available through fan translations with varying levels of English.
If you'd like I have a whole list of danmei and wuxia recommendations (I made them for some danmei newbie friends a while ago but I still have it)
MXTX: Heaven Officials Blessing (Tian Guang Ci Fu); Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi); The Scum Villain's Self Saving System (which you have already read). These series all have donghua's and other adaptations (some still in the making but who are really interesting); "Grim Reaper" (This is the story that she is currently working on and it's usually reffed to as Grim Reaper. We don't know much but we do know it's the revision stages and will probably come out at the end of this year or sometime next year.)
Meatbun doesn't eat meat/Rou Bao Bu Ci Rou: The Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun (shizun means teacher and is a respectful way of saying 'shifu' which is the same thing. Do not confuse it with 'shufu' which means uncle in chinese); Remnants of Filth (Yuwu is just like erha. In other words ut hits like a truck and then also nurtures you back to health in like a few chapters. There is a very sad and gut wrenching chapter that the author leaves a not on which is: "HAHAHHHAHAHAHAHA LMFAO" literally.)
Meng Xi Shi: Thousand Autumn's (this story is very beautiful but also very spicy. It's in the top list of very explicit and spicy danmei.); Peerless (it's not out yet but the author and Seven Seas Entertainment did announce it was coming out very soon. It's one of seven seas en's newest tweets.)
Manhua recommendations: Silent Concubine and Delighted to meet you. (You can find the first one online and the second on Bili Bili Comics.)

Is that one of Carolyn's prints in the background? Haha I wish you'd read Grandmaster, but i am hesitant to recommend it now with seven seas translations. I wish everyone got to read the fan translation by exiled rebels. I still recommend you read it bc as much as i go back to mxtx's stories for different reasons and they all make me feel so many emotions, grandmaster is the one i could talk about for hours and still realize new things from it, truly a masterpiece

WuXia is exaggerated martial arts. A prominent danmei on that would be Thousand Autumn. And it must be set in an underworld society call "JiangHu"
XianXia is about gods, taoist and Buddhist mythos, cultivation, immortality
And there is XuanHuan (literally fantasy) which many people mistaken for Xianxia.
