I won't claim to be an expert in fish identification, so let me know if I'm missing something, but according to a number of different websites on how to tell them apart, they checked every box for shellcracker. Even had confirmation from the locals.
When fishing for shell crakers especially on Santee do not use a bobber stop on your line you want the worm to lay all the way on the bottom and if you can find blue worms you will catch way more fish
