- President Vladimir Putin is preparing to formally annex around 15% of Ukrainian territory after referendums on joining Russia in areas controlled by Russian forces or Russian-backed separatists.
President Vladimir Putin says he's preparing to formally annex Ukrainian territory.
If he's successful - it could mark the end of diplomatic negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
All of this comes as referendums on joining Russia are underway in areas either controlled by Russian forces - or Russian-backed separatists.

All of a sudden the Ukraine is concerned about regions it has been bombing since 2014. Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia will be part of Russia as they are made up with a majority of people that speak Russian and are culturally and ethnically Russian . If Zelensky had stuck to negotiations with Russia in late March 2022 that would not have happened. Instead you listened to Boris Johnson from the UK (and US and NATO) and decided to settle matters on the battlefield. At this rate you will also lose Odesa, in which case what is left of Ukraine will be land-locked.

The areas are Russian traditionally anyway so they are not being annexed read some history books and don’t report on emotion and projection.

Zaporizhzhia - founded in 1770 as Alexandrov fortress by Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia.
Kherson - founded in 1778 by Catherine the Great
Lugansk - founded in 1795 as a metallurgical plant (with the workers encampment eventually growing into a city) by Catherine the Great

But in any case, these lands are part of a much larger Novorossiya, lands aquired the Russian Empire and developed by Catherine. Before Russian rule, it was a very sparsely populated region. Thus almost all cities in this land were founded by the Russian empire.
20% actually, these regions declared independence with defined borders they had post-USSR, not the current frontline borders.
