Anyone who knows Janet's music knows that the ballad was 100% live. You can easily tell the difference between the recorded version and the live version. Too often she is thought of as just a dancer/performer but she does have vocal talent and does showcase it live every once in a while. People just don't give her the credit that she deserves for her vocal talent.

What's she lacks in (live) vocal capacity, she makes up in performance + she is a real PRO when it comes to 'live' performances. She almost NEVER sings live, although it sounds like it... because she mostly uses just one vocal lead stem from the official album versions, which normally contain 4 or more layers. I've looked into it myself by putting her tour vocals from all for you over the stems of the songs i have, and they match 100% ! She is a true PRO in giving a performance of a lifetime. Just because the live version is different doesn’t mean it’s not still a pre recorded version.
Lol, you do there are prerecorded "live" vocals? Pop stars record a version for live performances.

I saw Janet in concert like 10 years ago. Felt semi live. Sometimes it felt like she was singing along to a newly recorded version of the song. Just so that it didnt sound exactly the same as the album version. I think she's an expert lip syncer. One of the best. With all that said, her concert was amazing. Two hours of entertainment.

I've seen Janet in concert. She does sing live especially when she is singing her ballads or songs that doesn't require much choreography. Janet is a dancer. Dancing takes a lot of energy.

I'm surprised that you have not done a Janet Jackson live reaction. You've done almost every pop group or singer in the business. Please, do more Janet reactions. I recommend her performance at the AMAs that she did in either 2009 or 2010; that's a great performance.

Exactly! She’s actually a great vocalist. The ways she uses her voice…. Totally Michael! Her harmonies, the way she lays them down, has inspired a lot of artists. If you listen to TLC, the way they layer their harmonies, totally Janet. But TLC is very inspired by Janet is every way.

The only thing is that ppl automatically assume Janet is not singing but don't do that to other artist. I've seen her live and it sounded very live to me. Janet knows how to use her voice very well.

Janet Jackson jumps in and out of live vocals, like a true professional. She is the originator of the headset mic used when dancing. She doesn’t lip sync FULL performances like Britney Spears.

I went to the Janet tour back in the day.. and i absolutely know she sang 'again' live as she cried throughout it.. although i know she did this every night.. it was breathtaking, I was in the second row and it was probably the best concert `i have ever been to.. she can sing and is just amazing.. there was no post production then x

I saw Janet live at the Velvet Rope Tour. It was amazing how strong her voice is live. It doesn’t sound like it would be, but it really is. This sounds completely live to me and not prettied up later either.
She has a pretty strong voice it's just doesn't produce a lot of volume. People sleep on her because of that, often the louder singers get more praise (ex:j hud). She is very capable and her voice is consistent too.

If there's a word you would never use to describe Janet's voice is "strong". And she doesn't sing live.

When she speaks, or says "c'mon", etc...she's live (just like the spoken parts of Nasty in this video). But so much of 1998 was lip synched. That's The Way Love Goes, Rhythm Nation, Velvet Rope, Rope Burn....and more.
Before I even start watching, my guess has always been Nothing (the 1st song) was live with the mic, and Nasty (the 2nd song) was pre recorded, while using the headset mic. She got a lot of flack for lip syncing almost exclusively during her prime, but I love how she's been doing more live singing now that she's older. Edit: After watching, I agree with your conclusion. She's no powerhouse of a singer by any stretch, but she's always easy on the ears and does have a pretty, mostly consistent tone. I have always appreciated that she always seemed to know her limitations, and never tried to do any vocal gymnastics...she does what she does well. On a side note, she looks absolutely incredible here!

I was wondering if you could react to Janet's 1998 performance of I Get Lonely live on the Rosie O Donnel show, she has some seriously stunning and angelic vocals, and I think it should be brought to light as Janet is often discredited as being a weak vocalist or that she supposively can't sing. They sound nothing alike. MJ had a genuinely powerful voice. I saw him live in 1992 in Glasgow , and he had a belter of a voice. We still remember being stunned that he had that power to him.

Janet usually (and obviously) sings her ballads live, but while dancing it's almost always lip-synched. She does a lot of heavy dancing, so you have to allow her some flexiblity.

Janet has always either lip synced or sang over pre recorded vocals as far back as the late 80s. The odd time she throws in a ballad live but that’s about it. Still a great performer and she definitely made some amazing music 🎶
The majority of her ballads are live (all of them are live on tour). If she’s lipping, she’s mostly likely dancing hard.

Well for her award shows yes given most dancer singers did Paula and Michael included. As far as her tours and concerts no. Especially the Rythmn Nation tour she sung that whole tour live. She didn't use a headset had a mic in her hand you can tell it was live as well with the close ups, breathy singing etc.
Janet tour in '93 was also heavily live. She didn't really do pre recorded track until the Velvet Rope tour in '97-99 and even that tour was mostly sung live she used the backing track for the choruses. Outside those three tours I going to say it is hard to tell but I would argue it's mixed with live and backing track and she never lip syncs her ballads given she isn't dancing and typically sits down while singing.
Most Janet award shows are high tempo dance numbers I do believe the Grammys 87 performance was live.

I've seen miss Jackson a few times live. Her dance routines are incredible. She does use a lot of playback but when she's giving you a 1000 percent on stage, is that really a problem?

So so happy you are doing what you do best by contentrating on the positives in your work. Its far more rewarding for the artist that you are, also for the audience. paying any attention on the negatives feeds negativity. I realise the negatives can get you down and i know your human with thoughts and feelings but remember if there is a negative response from your nay sayers it truly means your doing something correct. Sooooooo you go girl and you rock your channel as you always do. We all can see how much you love it simply because youre bloody good at it. So from my heart i offer deepfelt love and apreciation for what you do.

Went to a Janet concert in 2012 and most of it was live. As a singer I always look for these details when it's someone who is very active in their shows. At this particular show, she cracked herself up several times throughout, her pack fell off and took her headset with it, and she forgot the words once. **Pack -- the entire concert was performed in all black outfits for everyone because their wardrobe did not arrive in time for the run of show, so she had to dance with a wardrobe not designed for her pack and monitors, etc. It wasn't just the ballads where it was evident. Perhaps she had a lot of vocal rest prior to the show and we got very lucky. She was fabulous.

Even with uptempo songs, Janet does usually sing live. But she sings over a track. Because you couldn't possibly sing the full vocal whilst also doing the choreography that Janet does.

Jimmy Jam said in an interview years ago that Janet does in fact lip sync. BUT, nobody knows when she does it in concert. He said that she has a certain movement that only she and her sound guy knows that she uses to let him know when she wants to sing live and when she wants to take a break and lip sync for a few songs.

Great Reaction and great tips! Definitely agree that the song "nothing" was sung live and the rest precorded. A rule of thumb when it comes to Janet, when she uses a hand mic - she sings live 90% times. Headset mic, its precorded most of the time but she sings along with it.

This was such a fun video😆 ♥️🎉A bit of nail bitter as to what the final verdict was going to be.... Well I actually I saw this when it aired live. And no alterations have been made to the best of my memory. I think she sung the ballad live & did a spectacular job cause I remember being impressed at the time. I saw Janet live in 2017, there are parts live and others pre-recorded! I think her “Rock With U Tour” was the one she sang most of the songs live!
And here's another thing .....if I was in the audience when this happened I would have totally weed my pants. Had front row tickets for London, but the concert was scuppered by WTC attack. Janet didn't want to put her team under stress. Bless Ms.Jackson but I never got to see her. My life's dream.

However, there is no denying Michael, Jermaine and Janet have the same tone. Janet and Jermaine sat in their safety zone with the odd flourish whereas Michael always pushed himself.
This isn’t true at all. Janet lacks power, but she’s extremely multifaceted. How can you say that she doesn’t push herself on “You” (completely her lower register on the verses and chest voice on the chorus), “Scream”/“Black Cat” (as much of a punch in the gut as she can give) and “Together Again” (completely upper register)? And then there are songs where she’s literally scatting. Let’s not mention the layering of background vocals that inspired the likes of Brandy (another master at background layering). To say MJ has more vocal pushing and Janet stays in one pocket reveals to me you have no knowledge of her catalog.

Vocal coach I was in the 8th grade and I saw 👀 this live and it sounded just like this!!!!! She has always this voice she didn’t feel good enough but when Michael died it empowered her to show her full voice not just the whisper!

100% correct. When Janet sings live she sounds exactly like her albums and people assume she's lipsyncing. Her voice and talent are undeniably blessed.

I agree with your point. Janet did sing live when it comes to ballads. She performed the song Again on Oscar in 1994, and that performance was great. She does use pre-recorded vocals during the parts when she needs to dance. This becomes obvious when she turns up her mic and shouted to the audience to dance. The recorded sound and volume never fit her live performance. I think I've seen her singing All For You or Together Again live. She can do a good job too.
Live/Not live vocals can depend on a lot of things that have nothing to do with the artist's talent. You'd be surprised how many technical issues can arise even in this high end environment (look up that video with Nicole Sherzinger singing the duet on X Factor). Also, these people are under so much pressure and expected to sound like perfect robots on their best singing days under massive scrutiny every time they perform, which isn't realistic. I've seen Janet many times live during my time in the music business and her shows never felt canned/stale like a lot of pop artists, regardless of what was live or wasn't. I've seen other artists who aren't like that, but even they don't deserve shade. If you like an artist, enjoy them, if you don't, find something you do enjoy. I thought the coach's attitude was sweet though and more from a technical perspective, so no issues there, I'm just commenting on the general topic. :-D

I saw Janet in concert years ago - she had a great stage presence and the dancing was solid. But almost every song was pre-recorded with only the ballads done live.
The fact that she is almost swallowing the mic tells me she's covering her mouth with the mic to make it more difficult to spot any slips when she lips lol

Janet Jackson was the BEST dancer in the music business, and the most expressive, while being gorgeous and elegant at the same time, (which is not the case for Madonna or Britney, the other dancers of showbusiness). LEGENDARY ! I don't even care about her singing, her performances are amazing !
Paula Abdul says “hi”. You know.. the person who taught Janet how to dance. Janet has no voice to speak of. Zero. She’s not even backing vocal material.
I do think she probably sang live and that it was overdubbed, but saying that it was done to "slick it up" is very generous. I think it's completely overdubbed the exception of the end of "Nasty." The backing vocals sound exactly the same during "Nothing" so it's clear they were recorded at the same time in post. Mariah and Beyonce do this a lot too.

OF COURSE IT WAS LIVE , Everyone that performs on American Idol has to sing LIVE which is why a lot of artists don't go on the show. I see that you reviewed her singing live on The Rosie O'Donnell Show since this review , so now you see she CAN sing. Of course she is no Whitney Houston but Janet is a overall consummate performer .
