  • This is a slideshow of my winter project of converting a standard GMC Savana (same as Chevy Express), into a camper van. Links and details below for various parts and materials used. Most of the wood used is basically MDF. See videos on painting MDF before trying to paint to save you a bunch of time and money. Ceiling and ceiling border is 1/8 pre-painted MDF purchased at Home Depot. Bench tops and table top is 3/4" plywood.

Nice Job. We have the same van (although the added complexity of having the rear AC unit to work around and a CCV pop-top) and after an initial prototype layout didn't quite work, am back to the drawing board. Will definitely be looking at and absorbing some of your ideas and approaches since I think it's pretty close to what would work for us.

Ok, first question. Did you also bolt the new floor railings through the van floor, or just rely on the strength of the welds? What size steel? 2x2 tube?

Sorry for the late reply. I welded the new railings to the original seat railings. Yes, I used 2x2 square tubing.

Where do u buy the pads for your benches. How did u get your table to go down to conform to the bed?

I don't know how he did it but it looks like the same method used by ironing boards.

HI Kimberly and sorry for the late reply. The pads for the benches are simply a memory foam mattress purchased off amazon (Queen I think). It was cut with an electric steak knife. Much cheaper then buying regular foam. The custom table base/legs were made of 2 inch conduit and form scissor legs similar to like an ironing board. I hooked an actuator (from amazon) to it to make it raise and lower.
