Just getting ready to machine quilt. What a great video for all the little details to think about to be successful!! Will definitely check out more of your videos for suggestions!!!
totally unrelated to quilting - Your makeup in this video is stunning! That color palette is quite becoming to you, and gives you a bright and youthful appearance. That lipstick is the bomb! Just a side note in case you ever wonder if people notice ..... We do. But your quilting wins the show!
Hi Susan from humid Hopkinton, Mass. This video was very enjoyable. The hibiscus design is a perfect choice and I can't wait to practice. The thread choice was spot on, I love it.
Greetings from Nampa Idaho. Looking forward to learning even more. Thank you for being so willing to share your experiences and knowledge with us. All of us will be better quilters because of your videos.
Yes. I was coming in to make that comment as well. It is a 3 yard quilt. I have made one. This sunflower quilt is much prettier than the fabrics I used.
Thank you - love the design and the thread choice. As a newbie I don't like the way the bottom edge of the quilt is pinned to the leaders as it folds the border up too much, depending on where I pin, as it always makes a crease. I bought some magnets after seeing an earlier video of yours, tested them on the practice cloth and liked not having to fiddle around so much. I will get some more to start floating the quilt instead and see how that goes on - hoping for a nice bottom finish for once! Panic ensued on unpacking the parcel as they were so strong I couldn't get them apart from each other - daughter saved the day. Now I know what to expect LOL! Not so bad on the poles thank goodness!
I notice as you are quilting in manual mode my anxiety rising. Not knowing the pattern well enough (never tried it) that I not only can’t figure out the pattern and where to go. I am paralyzed each time I try a new quilt and that is not often enough. I have a hoop frame so can’t baste both sides at the same time. However, all your tips about squaring and smoothing help. Thanks for listening!😅
Q. . . 🌺 Watching your quilting is mesmerizing. It’s beautiful and I thank you for sharing. Question about your magnetic bars . . . do they have a concave back fitting the curve of your bar or is the back flat? I checked the link provided for the magnetic bars and the item populated magnetic bars with flat back. Please advise. Thank you.
I have them! In order to use them for loading you have to accurately place the top and bottom edges and baste them on. I prefer my rolling on method, so I only use the zippers when I need to dismount a quilt to work on another one.
Q. How important do you think the canvas leaders are to be straight? I have never replaced or squared them, I see comments from other long arms about squaring or replacing them. So I thought is ask you😊
I do think it’s important to have them square and straight (and also your quilt frame) to produce square quilts. That said, I have never had to square mine up in 1200 quilts! I once washed a set and they shrunk so badly I had to toss them, but I’ve never had mine stretch like some quilters show. Not sure what would cause that…
Thank you so much Susan for your information on the red snapper clamps I just ordered a set cause I really do need them thank you so much for sharing all your talent with us❣️🪡🧵✂️💓💗💕❤️💖
I believe I mentioned in the beginning - I had them in use elsewhere, so I thought it was a great moment to show that my non-centering method works with pins too.
Certainly a ruler foot which is thicker when doing ruler work. Beyond that, it’s basically preference for the job at hand. The one I was using in this episode is very fine so it offers great visibility. The spoon or cup foot glides over thick seams…and so on.
It does. It make sure it's all in place and smoothed out when I advance the quilt, and then I attach the magnets across the front rails so it can't shift while I'm quilting.
Thanks!
I agree with free motion edge to edge, my favorite way to quilt! Yours is beautiful. I hope to be that good one day!

I absolutely love the way you load quilt backing. I am going to try this method with my next quilt. I am doing a King quilt at present
Let me know how it goes!
I just tried this design. It is my new favorite all over texture. Thank you so much.
You are so welcome!

Aw, thanks!
Thank you Susan; and congrats on your 10k subscribers!

So glad you loved it❤️
Thank you for these tutorials. I quilt for myself on a Tiara mid-arm machine and I still find useful tips and tricks!❤

That’s the beauty of the quilting community…it shares and we all we all benefit by it.
Love this pattern!
So do I - trying to catch how many sunflower blocks it has,
The quilt pattern looks like "Town Square" by Fabric Cafe.

I’m totally impressed by your free motion quilting combined with talking and teaching. Does your upper back and neck take this without excessive pain?
When I’m not on air I take much more frequent breaks, and I’m really trying to improve my quilting posture! But no, I don’t have pain from it.

Some quilters attach drawer pull knobs in the pre-drilled holes to give a good grip😉

You use what’s comfortable for you! I’ve quilted these designs many times so I share what works for me, but it’s not the only way, for sure.

The back is flat. They just stick on👍🏻
I'm curious if you have ever tried zipper leaders? I have heard good things about them. Love you videos 💓

This looks like a 3 yard quilt pattern from fabric Cafe in case anyone is curious! She is prolific so i don't remember which one specifically.
Yes, I'm pretty sure you're right.
A bit on the foggy side for picture clarity. 🤔Wish I could see the fabric clearly.
Maybe re-load if that happens again? The streaming was clear on our end 👍🏻

Do you trim your quilts while quilt tops still on Stella?
No, I do them on a table with a mat, long ruler, and rotary cutter.
Hi Susan, from Spokane wa
Hi Jan!
New to quilting, who spoke your intro
Our son does those, there are a few different ones.
Why are you not using the red snappers on this quilt
I believe I mentioned in the beginning - I had them in use elsewhere, so I thought it was a great moment to show that my non-centering method works with pins too.
Do you ever do in person teaching?
Not very much these days. Unless it coincides with other travel😉 I will try to get my schedule up on my website so folks know if it’s possible.
How do you know which foot to use and when?
Certainly a ruler foot which is thicker when doing ruler work. Beyond that, it’s basically preference for the job at hand. The one I was using in this episode is very fine so it offers great visibility. The spoon or cup foot glides over thick seams…and so on.
Does the battimg stay put just hanging over belly bar??
nging o
It does. It make sure it's all in place and smoothed out when I advance the quilt, and then I attach the magnets across the front rails so it can't shift while I'm quilting.
Where can I get a bobbin gauge like you have?
Here's a link to one on Amazon. Mine is branded by BERNINA, but I've used the Towa - they're exactly the same: amzn.to/46dhoHQ
Thanks!
