Me: learns the first few notes of megalovania off of the sheet music Tom Brier: playing the hardest version of Dogsong imaginable straight off the sheet music
Tom is Tom, the goat, so don't misunderstand this: The guy (channel owner?) who makes these arrangements is obviously really fantastic at it, for Tom to have such confidence in the raggy tropes and tricks that come and go throughout, with a nice clear melody and good voicings. Kudos for some great arranging. Also that 6/4 section is🔥
Most things I gave to Tom I had re-scored myself because the arrangements online were not scored in a readable way. In some cases I did actually arrange the tunes myself as well. I don't remember whether I transcribed Dogsong myself or not. I think I might have done. I did add a C-flat on a chord that harmonically should have been a dominant D-flat (the original didn't actually have the seventh), as that would make the progression easier to read.
@@Keeper1st in the b section I'm guessing. Great choice :) The musescores of this kind of stuff are truly horrific, do you have your arrangements available anywhere? No worries if not, just thought I'd ask
Great work, Tom. And thanks Keeper for making him do these. Ive been watching for years and hope to continue. Good thing Toms been too busy for these, thats a good thing, so hopefully theres time for more sight reads in the future.
how did I miss this in my subscription box? Tom's renditions of game music are literally my favorite thing on UA-cam. he is without a doubt, the best improv musician on here. if I could meet him I am pretty sure my life would be complete. thank you for uploading man.
Who else is watching old tom brier vids to pass the time while he heals up, because you just know that no one can possibly match his skill in improvising or sight-reading songs on piano, so watching others perform Briers songs aren’t good enough for you?
Primitively, each line or space is assigned with a note, and each note has a length of time it should be held for. There are also tempo markings and marks that show how the notes should be played. Then all you need is an inner metronome and enough skill to be able to read it on the fly, but this guy is quite amazing at it
The time signature tells you the beat (4/4 is the common meter, so 4 quarter notes per measure. The standard if there is one. But there's others. Like 3/4 which is waltz time. 3 beats per measure! He switches to waltz time around 3:10, see if you can spot the difference!) From there you just gotta get the tempo (Beat speed. Tom taps his foot at the beginning to internalize the tempo) and then you just follow the notes along the staff (The horizontal lines) (I say just but this is where all the hard parts are, reading music is like reading english). Little vertical lines demark the measures on the staff (Which should equal to however many beats the time signature asks for) and then you play along. Whole notes take a whole measure, half notes half a measure, quarter notes one beat... and so on down the chain to eighth and sixteenth notes! The notes pitch is denoted by its position along the staff (On or in between or even sometimes completely above or below the lines) Read the music right to left, top to bottom, and play the notes to the beat and on tempo! For piano scores there's usually 2 staves lined up overtop one another. Top one is the right hand and bottom is the left hand. Tom plays the song ver batim the first time through, then he adds his own embelleshments because he's a talented musician and knows how to play around on his instrument. Then to have more fun he starts playing his own songs just in the same chord structure, or he changes the tempo/rhythm
Great work by Tom, and it's an Undertale song! Any chance he could do Spider Dance/Ghost Battle? It's definitely got that 'swing' and I think he'd enjoy improvising with the tune.
We don't even know yet if he'll be able to play again. A couple weeks after this was recorded, he was critically injured in a traffic accident. As of now he's beginning to use his right side limbs (even scratched his own face once) and his eyes are beginning to follow motion. There's still no evidence of real consciousness though. Still, at least improvements continue to happen, so we can hope for a full or nearly full recovery eventually.
I've been a fan of Tom's for years (thanks to your videos) and I just realized tonight I hadn't caught up in a while. I found this video and giggled and clapped my way through it - it was truly delightful! And then I read the comments. I am so sorry to hear about his accident - I am wishing Tom all the health and luck in the world, and more.
Still in good spirits, though he has not improved for quite a few months now. Still struggles to speak clearly, and very little movement of his right side. He can play chords with his left hand, but doesn't have much dexterity (he can't type, for example).
Keeper1st Well, thanks for letting me know... it's amazing that he even survived... this man is a legend and I hope he gets better and back to normal as possible...
The improvisations he adds to the piece genuinely wouldn't feel out of place in the actual game. They would suit as extra bits in the Greater Dog's theme really well! Amazing cover!!
I keep coming back to these videos. I really hope he makes a strong recovery. Tom has such incredible skill for ragtime, it's terrible what happened to him.
It's called a honky-tonk piano, and sounds different from a typical piano because one or more of the strings of a given note (Many of the higher notes are actually multiple strings being hit at once, rather than one, to give a "fuller" sound.) are made purposely slightly out-of-tune to give it that characteristic sound. If you'd rather not hire a tuner to mess with the piano to make it a honky-tonk, you can get a sort-of-similar sound by simply putting metal thumbtacks or short nails into the hammers; this is aptly known as a "tack piano"-which is a variant of something called a "prepared piano", which is just the practice of putting objects in-between the hammers and strings, or wedged in-between the strings themselves, to change the piano's timbre. Neat stuff.
It's so sad what happened to Tom. it didn't matter what piece of music you'd give him, he'd demolish it every time. He probably wasn't even really aware of all the different social groups that sat here enjoying his music. I know he made me into a fan of ragtime in general and I really only discovered him from the video game music. Godspeed Tom, I hope someday we'll get the opportunity to enjoy your music again and most importantly you get to go back to doing what you loved so much
Oh how I've missed these... will we see more soon without another huge break in between? I know Tom has been traveling recently, its not his fault or anything. It's just hard without a good fill of Tom's amazing ragtime music. :)
RIP to his piano playing, but I'm tremendously glad he's still alive. He's a brilliant man, and whether or not he can play doesn't change the fact that he deserves life. I hope he makes as full of a recovery as possible.
Great! Just a curiosity: Tom is a master of ragtime piano, sightreading and improvisation, but I wonder if he could sightread other stuff other than rag tunes, I mean, I'm sure he can sightread anything, but if you put a non-rag sheet in front of him he would "rag" it or just play it stright? I read somewhere that when you're accustoized to syncopation etc it's a bit harder to play in stright style (and viceversa, if you play only stright, ex. classical music ecc, it's not that simple to get accustomized to rag style). What do you think?
I've heard people ask him if he can sight-read classical music too. He says, "With difficulty." Ragtime is easier to sight-read because you don't actually have to read everything on the page; the left hand can be improvised and it still sounds good. You only need to see enough of the music to discern the chord sequence and then can "fake" it.
What's really wild is that it keeps sounding like dogsong throughout. If this was me, even if I had this kind of technical skill, I would completely lose the plot after a minute or two and forget to go back to the original song
It would be cool to see Tom play anything at this point. I do wonder what would happen if someone brought a tablet to his hospital bed and put a piano keyboard app in front of him. See if there's any reaction. Maybe the musical part of his brain is still functioning to some degree. Anyway, our ragtimer friend Florian has done Pirates of Caribbean: ua-cam.com/video/Wpq3bDHiW9s/v-deo.html
We Are Soup He was forced to quit. He is physically incapable of playing like this anymore. He got brain damage that severely affected his motor skills.
Keeper1st I understand, I didn't mean to imply this was a game music channel. I wasn't being too serious on my first comment either, hehe. Anyway... I've been subbed for some time now so it was a nice surprise to see an Undertale song. I would definitely like to see another, but I'm always looking forwards to your videos, game related or not. Keep up the good work!
+Keeper1st Not to push towards more Undertale pieces, but notice how Tom's richest improvisations are those of non-ragtime tunes e.g. Angry Birds theme, Korobeiniki or SML2 Ending. (sorry if this is a double, I think my old comment got deleted with it's parent.)
I think the flow of music is the closest thing to a language, you may be not good at speaking it beautifully but you can understand it just fine. I've been enjoying myself with jazz/improv music pieces and I'm grateful to all these moments and I'll never stop being sentimental.

Great choice :)
The musescores of this kind of stuff are truly horrific, do you have your arrangements available anywhere? No worries if not, just thought I'd ask

@@Keeper1st yoooooo ♥️♥️♥️
Great work, Tom. And thanks Keeper for making him do these. Ive been watching for years and hope to continue. Good thing Toms been too busy for these, thats a good thing, so hopefully theres time for more sight reads in the future.
how did I miss this in my subscription box? Tom's renditions of game music are literally my favorite thing on UA-cam. he is without a doubt, the best improv musician on here. if I could meet him I am pretty sure my life would be complete. thank you for uploading man.
This was absolutely incredible.
Who else is watching old tom brier vids to pass the time while he heals up, because you just know that no one can possibly match his skill in improvising or sight-reading songs on piano, so watching others perform Briers songs aren’t good enough for you?
Listening to this make me feel warm
Idk why.
So much personality was inserted into this song.
when the dog has his own saloon
came here from one of your old piano videos, THE QUALITY IS AMAZING
Tom is so humble. Notice at 2:25 (and other parts) that the F#3 key sticks down for extended periods of time. I couldn’t tolerate that. 🤷♂️
Whoa, this is amazing! How on earth does he get so much from just a little bit of sheet music?
Well, he reads sheet music like he reads english.
No, sight reading is exact. 'slight' reading is a term for adding your own bits i guess
Do you not know how reading sheet music works?
Primitively, each line or space is assigned with a note, and each note has a length of time it should be held for. There are also tempo markings and marks that show how the notes should be played. Then all you need is an inner metronome and enough skill to be able to read it on the fly, but this guy is quite amazing at it
The time signature tells you the beat (4/4 is the common meter, so 4 quarter notes per measure. The standard if there is one. But there's others. Like 3/4 which is waltz time. 3 beats per measure! He switches to waltz time around 3:10, see if you can spot the difference!)
From there you just gotta get the tempo (Beat speed.
Oh man, for the past couple of years I always come back here and it fills me with such glee hearing you play every time.
This is incredible
Aaay popskyy love your music!
Miss you Tom 😢😢😢
He’s made so many people happy
This never gets old.
*It fills me with determination* ❤
I've never cared for this song but it's clear that this song was meant for those keys.
those hands*
This is literally the perfect instrument and the perfect man and the perfect song for each other
Great work by Tom, and it's an Undertale song! Any chance he could do Spider Dance/Ghost Battle? It's definitely got that 'swing' and I think he'd enjoy improvising with the tune.
Seconding this
I third this.
Oh shit I heard about that. Didn't know that still wasn't resolved yet. Hope he turns out okay
We will see!
*proceeds to absolutely destroy it!*
This was a good one, hope he makes a good recovery. Wishing good for him!
Woooow Tom is a genious :D ...and you too of course that you record and share with us :)
Listening to Tom's music again from a year and so back, how is he doing?
Still in good spirits, though he has not improved for quite a few months now. Still struggles to speak clearly, and very little movement of his right side. He can play chords with his left hand, but doesn't have much dexterity (he can't type, for example).
Keeper1st Well, thanks for letting me know... it's amazing that he even survived... this man is a legend and I hope he gets better and back to normal as possible...
The improvisations he adds to the piece genuinely wouldn't feel out of place in the actual game. They would suit as extra bits in the Greater Dog's theme really well! Amazing cover!!
Now I want to replay undertale but have all the songs in piano xD
I keep coming back to these videos. I really hope he makes a strong recovery. Tom has such incredible skill for ragtime, it's terrible what happened to him.
Dog party at grillby's???
The sound of that piano, so crisp, so much like a saloon piano. I want one that sounds just like that
It's called a honky-tonk piano, and sounds different from a typical piano because one or more of the strings of a given note (Many of the higher notes are actually multiple strings being hit at once, rather than one, to give a "fuller" sound.) are made purposely slightly out-of-tune to give it that characteristic sound. Neat stuff.
It's weird seeing Tom in HD
Yeah, I'd only gotten an HD camera a year before his accident, so only the very latest videos of him from me were in HD.
I don't think I've gone more than a month or two without posting a video of Tom playing ragtime, so there shouldn't be too much withdrawal.
You only need to see enough of the music to discern the chord sequence and then can "fake" it.
thanks!
Wow! Hes still playing for 9 years!
For 40 years actually.
I miss Tom :(
Please tell us he’s getting better and if there’s anything we can do to help.
2023, I still love this man.Tom Brier is a genius!.... from Chicago ,IL
Dog Rag
What's really wild is that it keeps sounding like dogsong throughout. If this was me, even if I had this kind of technical skill, I would completely lose the plot after a minute or two and forget to go back to the original song
The f# key is broken and he just keeps on going like it isnt
I have discovered a very unexpected nugget of talent and dedication in my recommended.
Someone please make a ragtime version of pirates of the caribbean. That would be so cool to see tom play!
I'm really sorry to hear about Toms condition. I hope he recovers well, he will be in my prayers. ;(
Whoa, whoa whoa.... What's going on with Tom?
No changes over the past couple of weeks. Still has not regained full consciousness since the accident on August 6th.
What happened? Did he have a stroke?
The joy and the love for music in these video's are so addictive to watch. Bravo🧡
A suggestion, you should have him listen to the music from Cuphead, I’m sure he’ll get a kick out of it. He seems like the kind of guy who will. :)
He quit after a car accident.
We Are Soup He was forced to quit. He is physically incapable of playing like this anymore. He got brain damage that severely affected his motor skills.
He's recovering nicely and has started playing with both hands again :D
I love how he gets a feel for it and adds his own spin to the song. Amazing talent!
my life goal is to learn to read sheet music and play this
Good luck!
What type of monsters would dislike such a masterpiece of a video
Paulo Pleb, people who can't play as well as he does, so they get jealous that there not good as him. or they hate the song or piano's, maybe? Idk
Man, is there anything Tom can't master!? This man is a genius!
_We’ll see_
*_Words said right before legendary moments_*
Hey Keeper, any updates on how Tom’s doing?
I love how he can hear the melody in his head before start playing...
C-can you get him to play the whole soundtrack...? Please?
All 101 musics?
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA no.
No. I don't do these things because they're game music; I do them because they're ragtime.
Czarek7711 Well, with Korobeiniki, he was given a small enough amount of material that he could have made any thing out of it. No?
Ive been playing piano for over 9 years but sheets make my head hurt... mad respect for this guy
👏Megalovania 👏
I think the flow of music is the closest thing to a language, you may be not good at speaking it beautifully but you can understand it just fine. I've been enjoying myself with jazz/improv music pieces and I'm grateful to all these moments and I'll never stop being sentimental.
hey by the way, I was going to try and transcribe Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman for a piano duet. any advice?
nvm...........
1-up Man any luck?
no... I gave up.
A bit late but I would start from something like this piano + singing score fileserver.freehandmusic.netdna-cdn.com/preview/530x4/abrsm/smn_71634.png
