This is another fantastic recording by the Willy Berking orchestra. The song is "Kauf dir einen bunten Luftballon" (lit. Buy yourself a colourful balloon) - composed by Anton Profes for the 1943 ice skating musical "Der weisse Traum"" (The White Dream). This musical about an ice skating champ, Liesl Strolz, who becomes the star of a ice skating revue starred Olly Holzmann and Wolf Albach-Retty. Olly Holzmann (1916-95) was a real life ice skating ace and handsome Wolf Albach-Retty was Romy Schneider's father. The musical was directed by Geza von Cziffra and the music was composed by Anton Profes - famous for composing "Am sonntag will mein süsser mit mir segeln gehen" in the 1920s as well as the music for the "Sissi" movies of the 1950s.
The song "Kauf dir einen bunten Luftballon" became an instant hit and has become a classic . The movie and its music provided the sort of escapism which by the time of its premiere (5/10/43 in Vienna and 10/11/43 in Berlin) was much in demand... Olly Holzmann's singing voice was dubbed by the Italian opera singer Alda Noni - who performed at the Vienna State Opera from 1942 until 1946.
A lovely sung version by Herta Mayen can be found in the Dairyman716 channel :

The movie which featured spectacular musical scenes did brisk business and became one of the most succesful movies of the wartime years (in only 17 months). After the war it was re-released both in Germany and abroad. Together with the Marika Rökk musical "Die Frau meiner Träume" (The girl of my dreams) it was one of the first German musicals to be shown in Stalinist Russia as part of the so called "Beute-Kunst" (lit. Looted Art)...
"Der weisse Traum" was remade by Geza von Cziffra as "Kauf Dir einen bunten Luftballon" in 1960. The new version however lacked all the charm of the original...
More information on the movie can be found here :

The video features pictures of Olly Holzmann and Wolf-Albach Retty as well as some sequences from "Der weisse Traum".
About the record :
The title of this release has been changed to "Schenk mir einen kleinen Luftballon" (Buy me a little balloon). The reason for this is not clear as the song was known as "Kauf Dir einen bunten Luftballon" and recorded as such (a contemporary version by Kurt Widmann and Evi Marlen exists)

Berking - Klasse wie immer!
In dem Film: Der weiße Traum wurde das Lied gesungen von Alda Noni, Kauf dir einen bunten Luftballon.
As we can plainly see the German people were about beauty and love, the 'leaders', politicos not so.
Defectively motivated leadership continues to be the bane of people everywhere who are just people who want to live, sing, dance, love. 🙏
It´s always like that. Most people just want to live their life. the Germany in the 1930s watched the same kind of movies like the French or Americans. It´s always the people on top who are the troublemakers.
It was the allies who wanted to turn german high culture into a degenerate, hollywood, multikulti bizzaro world such as we see today. That's precisely what this video is showcasing. German culture before it was destroyed by the Allies. And how beautiful it was!
Danke fürs Video HOchladen. Sehr schöne Musik und Eistanz.
Brilliant ice-skaking and dancing---and MUSIK. Thank you for posting this!

re Herr Willy Berking: Here is his biography (from Wiki):
"Berking studied music (piano and composition) in Düsseldorf and then in Berlin, where he formed his first big band at the age of 18 in 1928, writing jazz arrangements for the ensemble. In the 1930s he played trombone with various dance and entertainment orchestras including the Goldene Sieben and the Telefunken Swing Orchestra under Heinz Wehner, with whom he went to Berlin in 1934. Towards the end of 1943 he became director of the studio orchestra for Imperial records, known as the "Berking-top series," which were excellent, swinging sides, despite the Nazi party ban on swing music. At the same time he directed the "propaganda" big band, "Charlie and His Orchestra". After the end of World War II Berking was musical director for the Eurovision Song Contest 1957 held in Frankfurt am Main, West Germany. As well as conducting the German ensemble, he also conducted the Flemish, Luxembourg and Swiss orchestras. Berking conducted the German ensemble for the Eurovision Song Contest four times 1957, 1963, 1964 and 1966. Berking died of cancer in 1979."
One will never understand the simultaneity of ...
Willy Berking wäre heute 100 Jahre alt geworden! (22.06.10) - Gestern abend brachte der NDR eine Sendung über "Kuli", wo Berking oft als musikalischer Leiter fungierte.
thankyou
I'll always be amazed by the ability of humans to completely disassociate themselves from the cruelties and horrible things that happen in the real world. To think that so many ordinary Germans were escaping that reality by watching these movies is fascinating indeed. It speaks volumes on the human psyche.
What always fascinated me was that these movies never went away in Germany. They remain revival and television favorites to this day. I think a lot of viewers in Germany don't even know that they're from the Nazi era!
You're either trolling for attention with your absurd comment or you are a seriously fucked up person. I mean it.
@Adam Carlo, obviously you have no idea what really happened during that time period but you have chosen to believe the lies of the AL(L) - Lies. But what you say about the human psyche is right. It always amazes me how Americans could live on happily during time of Atomic bombing of many million people in 1945 ( and the atrocities committed Dresden were more than 400.000 people, yes that many, perished without justification), Vietnam war, bombing out entire the Middle East under pretext of 9/11 and many other countries were they've killed over 200 MILLLION people in the past decades under the pretext of bringing "Democracy". The amount of hypocrisy expressed in your comment is staggering.
Some of those ordinary Germans told me how thankfull they were to forget about the horror around them by spending 90 minutes in a dream world instead of the real nightmare outsideof the cinema. And what about the Americans who danced to Glenn Miller while bombing children and women in Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Or today all those people in the US watching trash tv while their government plays waterboarding in Guantanamo?
A beautiful song. And a nice film. But can you hear the bombs detonating in the background...
Ich glaube viele teilen meine Meinung
A mi esta abburido escuchar a las melodias y canciones de nord - americanos ! Lo mejor escuchar a la musica popular de Alemania . Ruso .
Fine Song Aloha from Hawaii
Caterina Valente covered this song as well
A film of Hitler and Eva on ice skates was recently discovered in the back of an old Mercedes.

Warum ist der Titel des Videos geschrieben worden - Kauf Dir einen bunten Luftballon ???

Funny German text... seven mistakes!
Meanwhile in Poland...
Did these swing artists fall under what Goebels found acceptable for the regime, or were these recorded in secret? What's the deal? Did he grow lax as the situation worsened in the Reich or are my postwar history readings biased somehow?
Not trying to start anything political, I like it here, just trying to hash out why there's such a large number of 'banned' genres being recorded at this time. I'm in the process of studying German, so I'm absorbing the language through music that I know I'll like. UA-cam is awash with fresh 21st century apologists, so I'm not getting anywhere by reading the comments.
@Kegan Mahon: For the film, this clip ist taken from, see www.imdb.com/title/tt0036519/reference
Perhaps you hit the nail on the head since there was a similar development in "ailing" Eastern Germany, the other dictatorship on German territory. With mounting pressure from inside, the communist authorities in East-Berlin became more lenient as to what they thought was American/western decadent culture. In particular so toward rock music. There is a "famous" clip with the first East-German tyrant, Walter Ulbricht (later followed by Erich Honecker), where he denounces that "yeah, yeah, yeah" (meaning the Beatles, of course), the GDR could well do without. In his opinion, that is. Hence GDR rock bands came under pressure or were forbidden altogether.
As to the time between the seizure of power by the NSDAP and their end there are moments when I start wondering myself whether Josef Goebbels sometimes was asleep back then or what. There are films from the mid 1930s with swing music as well, produced by UFA (where Samuel/Billy Wilder, Fred Zinnemann, Robert Siodmak, and many others had once made their first attempts at moviemaking before emigrating to Hollywood). -
BTW: Given that you are doing German studies, my "name" is a little play on words (which works best in spoken German, though). "Der Sozialismus siegt" would mean something like "Socialismus prevails/is victorious". "Der Sozialismus siecht", on the other hand, means the opposite, namely "Socialism is waisting away". So, it's the verbs "siegen" vs. "(dahin-)siechen". Both sound identical in Saxon dialect, as spoken in cities such as Leipzig, Dresden, and Zwickau (where Bond adversary Goldfinger / Gert Fröbe was born).
EIN LUFT KANNON ODER
Ey, Kollega warum sol ich kaufe den Ballon 🎈... Bin ich schwul?!
1943.....tanz Musick und Auschwitz.....
Evil Nazis. But rather awesome music. There is a little good in everything, and in this case, the good came from artists, not the Facistist. Credit to the musicians who probably would rather have been in an Allied nation. Note how the rhythms are American and English. I do love the sound of German swing, and I also feel rather shitty about liking anything from Germany during this time.
Listening to this and some other bands of the era (eg Erhard Bauschke), I wonder if there was some cultural prohibition against how much 4/4 you could have in dance rhythm. This cut is mostly two-beat, with the bassman letting it "ring" on 1&3, just subtly emphasizing the downbeats.
Fühle dich weiter Beschissen! So wie es erwartet wird!
Feel like shit! As expected!
America's MORGANTH PLAN Was Very Evil..
What about watching Singin in the rain or The Band Wagon? Those wonderful movies were made at a time when the KKK killed, burned and tortured, in the US this is called: Democracy...
But Nazis nevertheless
So every German is a Nazi? As every US-ciitzen from the South is a member of the KKK? The director of this movie Geza von Cziffra was from Hungary and he was NOT a member of the Nazi party, one time he even was arrested by the Gestapo. And what do you really know about Germany and the second world war, history or propaganda? Just google some German names like Franz Stiegler, Adolf Galland or Hans-Ulrich Rudel and you might see, things are a litte more complicated than propaganda. And PS: Der weiße Traum is a really good movie. So is The Thomas Crowne Affair...
Danke schön!
