It brought me to tears of joy. Such an unexpected jewel. The power of cinema and music is extraordinary. I'm a white Australian/ Canadian. It was this scene more than any other in the film which humanised the battle for me. Just exquisite.
I think it should have nabbed an Oscar. I love Green Book which was released the same year and won Best Picture but this Spike Lee joint is probably his finest cinematic achievement. The editing, acting, cinematography, music, everything is just perfect. Not an easy film to sit through at times but an important one.
My theory on why this scene is so god damn good and emotional is because it’s so evident that music and dance, that sense of community when in it, was salvation for times that were so fucked up. It’s like “let’s go escape”. And you can feel that in the scene, you can just feel how pure it is. Fucking beautiful.
A good song being played for you to hear. They don't want us listening to old, good music all the way through. Lots of movies have bad music, overplayed hits, or have a good song play for 15 seconds and you don't feel it. If you are playing records with people, you experience this feeling all the time. This scene is capturing what people have been depriving themselves of for years. Blasting bass sounds over a trap beat with egotistical lyrics in your car, even if the song is decent, will never make you feel good like this.
Maybe so Jeremy. Thank you. That's more than I can come up with. I've watched it every day since I watched Black Klansman for the first time last week This scene makes me cry. My husband agrees it's beautiful. I just watched the movie with him. But I can't explain to him why this scene affects me--a white woman who will be 69 in two days--the way it does. I'll just keep watching it. Sensational, stunning movie! It should be required watching in schools. I'll be giving it to my grandchildren-ages 12-19-- for their birthdays this year. I can't wait to discuss it with them.
this is flawless... i thought that this scene had like 10 minutes of dancing, but it is just 1:50... it seems like it will last forever and i really wish it would
This is an utterly incredible scene that defines an era. This is one of my songs that I escape to for comfort and assurance that everything will be ok. This song and the dancing always makes me smile and realize that tomorrow will be a better day.
I’m a straight, white, proud Australian male - and super proud. Yet this scene in theatres brought me to tears. Absolutely stunning. Well done to all involved.
BrillWing Major and I’m a straight, proud, white female living in the Deep South in America. This scene brought me so much joy and every time I watch it I feel it again. Spike is an amazing director.
kcaps9 because people do care. We’ve been divided for Millenia and the current climate in multicultural countries across the globe testifies there is still a gap to bridge across.
No 3D imax or Hd can ever compensate with the power of great directing. You got swept away for this moment, wishing you were here, feeling the sweat of that dark packed room. Spike lee is phenomenal
This dance scene from Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman is such a beautiful portrayal of soul and pure love that it brought tears to my eyes. I keep returning to it as well, because it evokes a sense of common unity that is hard to find in the world, but it is something WE ALL strive for. The purity of everyone's spirit, the kinship and happiness the people are feeling will stay with me. The soul is the heart of the spirit, I see it in everyone that's in this scene! This is one of the most beautiful sequences I've ever witnessed on film. Thank you Spike!
thisss is why only black ppl should tell black stories. thank u spike lee for showing black love instead of only black suffering; i can't stop thinking about this scene
i love this scene because it shows how positive dancing and partying at clubs can be especially in spaces designed to be safe for groups that dont feel safe in general. it's moments of pure joy between the difficult parts of life. joy is an act of resistance
I am a child of the sixties and this song and the dance moves (not to mention hair, makeup and wardrobe) nailed it. Spike Lee has a mega heart and an unparalleled artistic vision.
Great scene! I actually wished it continued with more great soul classics. Heck, If the entire movie was just more of this dancing to the 70s classics I would have loved it! (hint, hint to any producers out there) Anyway, good movie! :-)
God Bless you Spike Lee! Not only for bringing this song back and for a movie that is so pivotal in this day and time. Should've won for Best Picture/Actor but the most important thing is that we act and take needed action towards LOVE AND EQUALITY no Matter what it takes. Fa REAL.
This is a perfect scene. It captures feeling in an organic way. It reminded me a bit of the Copacabana scene from Goodfellas although they don't necessarily look alike. They just so perfectly capture a moment of joy with camera work, music and allowing the actors to just do rather than act. Spike Lee crafted something simple and magical.
You can tell how her mood ( melancholy) changed, from the time she told him about the incident to when she started to dance(lively). Which is the reason he asked her to dance. Greatness.
Ever since I saw this movie in theaters, for some reason this scene stuck out to me the most! I've been looking for it ever since, & I always jam this song non stop now. I wish we could go back to those times of dressing up/dancing, unity, & having a good time as people with no fighting/violence. Loved this movie overall! 👍🏾👌🏾👏🏾❤
I wonder how many times they had to shoot for this scene, and if the people there ever got tired of this song. I know I can't get enough of it though :D
I know its a movie but i love the way he is looking at her only hes all about her.. thank you spike great scene! great movie :) ive watched this scene about 100 times. Peace & Love
Yesterday I watched the movie and this scene is the one I keep thinking of. I hadn't been listening to that song for some 40 years, and it brought back a lot of memories and sensations of days when the music was so much more touchy than today's. I didn't imagine so many more people had the same feeling (I am from Brazil, that's probably why). Damn good.
This dance sequence is perfection. One of the best-choreographed dance pieces in years. The 70s song by Cornelius Brothers should remind us how music can make us feel. Growing up in the 70s, this song would make me stop in my tracks, shout, scream and start dancing. I didn't give a shit who might be watching. This is the way music should make us feel. Get up and dance, anywhere. Thanks Spike Lee. I can't stop watching this. From the dance moves to the fashion and love shared in this club, makes me feel like our future will be ok. Keep the faith.
I wanted to see this in the theatre, but they wouldn't show it here (in Alabama). I finally got to see this in the airplane on a flight from Munich. I loved it. I absolutely loved it. And that song was stuck in my head for days afterwards. This has earned a slot on my DVD shelf.
We'll get this type of music back into the public mainstream. I'm planning to put together a Retro Decade Revival Project. Our goal is to bring real entertainment, true talent, pure originality and diversity, old school and more back into the public mainstream, starting with the 1980s. Music will finally revert back to no having cussing, stripping and BS at all, just wonderful songs that are unforgettable, diverse, true, pure and never boring. I love your good taste in music, that's what I like about you. Keep at it, pal and never lose hope.
I was 12 or 13 in Manila when this came out. it was a chaotic time in my country yet this song gave me a sense of happiness. I'm 63 now and I'm so happy to hear it again after 5 decades!!! Thank you Spike!
I make no apologies when I say there ain't no way a white Director could have produced this magnificent scene. Black Excellence of the highest order!..So proud to be Black!
SuperXavier30 "I make no apologies when I say there ain't no way a black director could have produced this magnificent scene. White excellence of the highest order!... So proud to be white!". Is this racist?
Wubzorg: White director's have been praised for their depiction of black folk since the awful "Birth of a Nation". Many films followed which were also highly praised, yet many black people still cringe at the sight of how we were portrayed and what we represented. This my friend is part of the true "essence"of what it means to be Black and beautiful people. We're only celebrating, that's all.
ah, yes, a great tune from a time of dark salloons with dance floors, one juke box, and disco balls, thanks for the flashback, was having too much fun to be angry about anything back in those days
I have been thinking about this scene ever since I saw this movie. We need to get back to dancing.
I agree with you
Better yet, get back to unity!

Absolutely! Perfectly constructed. Great music. Powerful without being preachy. Just the right length. Perfect. How could anyone downvote this??!
How can you watch this scene and not smile at it. It’s like Spike Lee knew what exactly it would take to make us smile
Thumbs up!
