Very useful videos the last few weeks thank you. Something that would be interesting is some builds for the companions you meet in the game. Perhaps some multi-class options. its always super interesting to see some of the options people come up with.
Just a little precision on the multi-attack of animal companions. If it's like in kingmaker, only pets that have only one natural attack at level one (like the dog) will obtain new attacks as their BAB increases. Those that get multiple attacks from the beginning (like the smilodon, leopard...) do not gain additional attacks as they level up. They make all their attacks at full BAB but do not gain more. So the 'multi-attack' ability is useless for these animals.
I tested it with multiple pets at different levels, it doesn't work like that anymore, unless I'm just having a weird issue I suppose. But yes I'm aware that's how it worked in kingmaker
@@MortismalGaming I am playing a Sacred Huntsmaster with a leopard companion now and they are level 2. My leopard has all his attacks (a trip bite and claws). I will see what happens at later levels...
IF you pick something that lose multi attack or only have a bite attack just make them focus on Vital Strike, which basically make them have 4 attacks in one, better than most damage upgrade you can give your pet. Barding mostly suck Pick a brownfur transmuter buffer.... they can get to like 60+ str and 60-70AC morphed into dragon ... the dragon form keep the trip from say ... lepoard or dog/wolf very very strong.
i do have a question about this ive been playing through and it seems that the only animal that gets visual armor is the wolf and only if you go order of the paw is this a bug or did they only code one armor for one mount for one subclass?
One of the mythic paths gives you a second animal companion if you already have one. Otherwise, it's one animal companion that levels up when you level up in any class that gets one. As for the strongest class to have an animal companion, that's kind of subjective. It depends on what you want them to do.
There is nothing like riding a raptor and slashing your enemies 9 times per turn with a huge dueling sword while having a big azata dragon destroying things alongside with you. Crazy build
There is definitely something going on right now with animal companion attacks. My smilodon started with the 5 attacks it is suppose to have (1 bite, 4 claws) on a full attack and then randomly after a few fights it suddenly got reduced down to only one bite and one claw attack. I did lots of testing but never found the exact trigger, it seems to have some connection with charge attack as after its use I noticed the attacks get reduced immediately after. This isn't always the case though, even if I never used charge once on any of my characters I still found the bug triggering from something else at some point. Strangest thing is once the bug triggers I have found that reloading to a prior save when the full attacks were still in effect or even restarting from desktop failed to fix the bug. The only workaround I found was reloading to a save just prior to when I leveled up and gained the animal initially (took a level of hunter at level 2 on a party member). It took me several restarts to even get past the maze while I was testing, and then it was just shear luck that I made it about half way through act 1 before it randomly triggered again. After that I just felt it was too far in to go back so reluctantly retrained. Anyhoo, I have sent in my bug reports, hope that it gets fixed soon. Other than this I've been loving the game. Don't usually post on videos but just wanted to get the word out since this can put a damper on many classes.
Having the same problem with my Smilodon mount. I am mounted, standing right next to enemy, it should get full attacks every time. But instead it seems to just get Bite 2/3rds of the time, and then does a proper full attack maybe 1/3 of the time. Cannot figure out what is causing the difference, seems random. This is at level 4 using a human cavalier shrunk to medium size with reduce person wand.
@@Atanatari165 as of the latest patch, the natural weapons on the smilodon is fixed...mounted combat is still bugged to hell though so ...you may be in for a wait..currently i think they are focused in on game breaking bugs from act 3 4 and 5.
you shouldn't be getting extra attacks based on BaB with natural weapons, unless there is a bug or they decided to change things up. I played a bunch of kingmaker and phase 2 beta for a bit and at least the character screen showed such(and thats how it works in table top). you get 1 attack with every nat attack plus haste will give you another when full attacking. so still only getting the 1 on a standard action. there are some builds that stack multiple sources of bite on characters that confuse the issue
I checked multiple times with multiple pets, they start with one attack and gain more as they get more BaB, I know that's not how it works in Kingmaker though
@@MortismalGaming good to know, now I wonder if this is deliberate design choice, they did rework animal companions quite a bit to make them level like normal characters so who knows what got changed. thank you for your diligence sir
In PF1e while mounted, your mount doesn't get a turn but your mounted character essentially uses your mount's speed to move. So, a 15ft speed halfling cavalier in medium armor riding a 40ft speed wolf wearing no armor is both tanky and maneuverable right at 1st level.
@@havokmusicinc thanks for the reply it makes sense it should work like that but looking at reddit mounted combat its not working the way its supposed to be while in turn based and thats why i couldnt tell if my mount was attacking

First things first, thanks for the content, as a family man I'm trying to get most things out the way via your videos that would require me 2 read the character creator for 6 days. I have 3 questions though; any viable druid mixes? In kingmaker I played true world (due to campaign) + smilodon plus some barbarian and fighter I think for cleaves etc. What in that vein would work best here? 2. The staff monk, flurry + mount + gear seems nice, any thoughts? 3. Possible video request: since I don't feel like micromanaging the whole crew as of now, I'm thinking of just letting them do their think (it's a time management issue, im sure I'll break that once I really get into it), but it would be very helpful to hear tips like "just hit X with one level in Y for the Z bonus and you're good.
That's actually a pretty good point! I got caught out with my Arcane Rider, who supposedly gets an 'animal companion' as a class feature, but I didn't realise it would have to be a horse. I really wanted to ride a smilodon :( I am guessing Sohei and some other riding-focused classes are also restricted to just having a horse, which, while horses are cool in their own way, is actually kind of a letdown since many other companions (smilodon, bear, wolf, etc) are totally ridable once they size up at L7.
Note: Boon companion also works if your class doesn’t get a companion until later, like clerics. This keeps them your level (up to 4 different) which is very helpful
damage reduction is nice, but giving up evasion for the free barding feats is PAINFUL. I'd rather just keep the basic archetype and manually pick up the feats.
How does the pet-level boosting feat interact with the Legend mythic path? Does it allow your pet to go over level 20 if you maxed the class that game them?
What about Seelah companion option ? If you give horse +1 to int, and maunted combar feat, how would it work ? it would protect rider or horse ? coz you can put all in mobility + perks (horse character) and be very hard to hit ? ? ? On the other hand heavy armor + shield (rider) makes mobility very weak.....
I used the ''impossible domain'' to gain the animal domain, turns out, I didn't need boon compaion for it to have max level, so that was a nice surprise
Noticed that if you are going mounted first level, then paladin 2nd level, the mount gets levels, even though the paladin get their mount at lvl 5. and only if you chose to bind your divine power to the mount. Might be a bug, its nice though. is there any lance weapons in game now? haven't found any, and don't know if the spears have the same effect as a lance would.
@@MortismalGaming I'm playing an order of the paw cavalier and so far when charging with a spear it's not doing double damage, and I noticed the spirited charge feat doesn't call out lances specifically, just says it doubles the damage of melee weapons. Now there are several reasons this could be, ranging from Owlcat deciding not to make spears count as lances, to it being a specific kind of spear I haven't tried yet (e.g. longspear) to a bug with spears or a bug with order of the paw cavaliers. I've also noticed that, unlike the TTRPG where cavaliers don't take the AC penalty to Ride skill when mounted, there doesn't seem to be anything that keeps armor from crushing your mobility skill and thus making the mounted combat feat far less effective. Of course, I've yet to see a mounted combat roll in the log, so I'm not sure if the penalty is applying or if the feat is even working. Loving the game, but with these features not working, I am likely to reroll as a different class.
@@briane75 that's fair, can't say I'd tested it personally, I just remember them saying something about spears replacing the lances since there weren't any
@@MortismalGaming Yep, I remember them saying it as well. I just tested with a longspear, it doesn't double the damage either. Nor can you use a spear or longspear 1h while mounted. My initial guess is they didn't make anything to replace lances, but it could be a bug.
I’m confused about wether weapon fines is good or not for wolf… my strength is higher then dexterity so I would think it would actually be worse but it keeps recommending it…?
I had a question regarding the feat Mythical Beast, I read somewhere that choosing this allows you to chose teamwork feats so that you don't actually have to raise INT to 3. Is what I read correct or was that bogus info on reddit?
Are the animal companion and the possible beast shapes the same? I'm considering making a methamorph which gets the mythic feat "destructive shockwave" as early as possible to deal round about 30 damage even when every attack misses. But I cant find any Information which animals you can shift into. (unfortunately I have to wait at least a week since the delivery time for new hardware is just nuts at the moment)
It says that leopard at lvl 4, draws attack dmg from dex instead of str. But I still see it from str and not dex. Do i need weapon finesse since its doing the same thing at lvl 4? Am i missing some?

I normally go leopard for a buffed pet build or wolf since trip is hilarious. Haven't played in WotR pets yet as I'm still going through a paladin build.
Can you use all Cavalier abilities & Skills on any mount? Was wondering if you could use all the abilities & skills from a Cavalier on any mount. I want to go Azata Mythic Path and use the Dragon as my mount.
Natural attacks do not require high bab to get all of them. If you have the attacks you can use them from level one so long as you are doing a full attack (on another note, you CAN move and do a full attack, but only a five foot movement). Bab does not come into play for determining the number of natural attacks. Nor does having high bab give you additional attacks. If you have a bite and two claw attacks, that's what you have, whether your bab is +1 or +20 you only get those three attacks. Only certain player classes allow one to use natural weapons for iterative attacks, namely the Shifter, which is not present in this game, only the pen and paper version. This is one of the big differences between natural and manufactured weapon attacks. Edit: There is, however, a bug in the game right now that can cause your animal companions to lose all but two of their attacks if they have more than that. Not everyone is experiencing it but a lot of players, level two and onwards, are. Keep that in mind, may want to wait for an animal companion fixing patch before trying one of those classes if you have your eye on other classes too.
Its related to loading the game...Ive tested it fairly extensively. You can level up the pet, save the game and if you continue playing, all is well...if you reload, exit and restart the game, or quick reload, bam, you lose your attacks.
I think giant centipede is not medium. I've tried a few times with a halfling to mount it and it won't let me. So I am guessing it needs to get it's size boost and then you can mount it. FWIW my halfings riding a boar or a smilodon is worth the price of the game on its own!
@@MortismalGaming Yeah, there are cinematic or story beat places that won't let you mount or remove you from it. But the centipede can't seem to do it anywhere I've gone by level 3 so far :(

Can you change your animal companion? I want to play a cavalier, and dont want to wait 7 levels for the animal to get large and finally be able to mount it.
In Kingmaker at least, the best companion was always the smilodon. Hardly any less tanky than the tankiest other companions, had crazy stats and 5 attacks right out of the gate. Now that you can also give it feats, zomg, what a killing machine you will be able to make! There is something to be said for leopard if you wanted a companion with insane dex (and therefore some decent touch AC), but it does only get 3 attacks compared to Smiley's 5. (A halfling riding a leopard would be super cool, though!) If you were playing full on combat maneuvers (which I rarely did) I guess wolf would not be too bad, since it trips on bite, so you could go with tandem trip feats and so on, but IMO battles get too big too fast for a trip here and there to be more than just 'kinda nice'. In Kingmaker, the bear companion had one possible use (other than flavor) and that was to pair it with the Thundering Claw of the Bear God, the most badass weapon in the game (for me, at least) for a slight boost to its badassness (it caused you and your pet to deal extra elemental damage, with the amount increasing further if you or your pet was a bear). I am exploring WotR to see what cool items they have that might have a similar effect.
@@Atanatari165 tbf the "Mythical Beast" mythic ability makes dps animal companions even more worthwhile because it allows for reliable damage in most circumstances

You can only get it once and it only adds +4 to your total animal companion-linked classes. Means u can multiclass 4 levels outside of non-animal companion classes and still have a max level pet.
I haven't tested it, Animal Companions use the level of the class you got it from and usually stack with other classes that give you an animal companion and you still can only put 20 levels in a class, so I'm not 100% but if you only picked classes that gave you an animal companion it might
Unless I missed an option somewhere, your only animal companion option as a paladin is a horse. Which certainly fits the stereotype but it's really goofy to have your horse running around and biting people when you're not mounted.
Is it me or is Dex a trap stat for Animal Companions? It feels really good until they grow larger, getting a net difference of +10 Str. Even if you assign all 6 points to Dex, your companion will probably still have better Str at max level. And that's not even accounting for the fact that Animal and Titanic Growth exists, but no shrinking equivalent for Dex builds.

You can't ride the centipede companion and I'm still angry about learning this at lvl 7
IF you pick something that lose multi attack or only have a bite attack just make them focus on Vital Strike, which basically make them have 4 attacks in one, better than most damage upgrade you can give your pet.
Barding mostly suck
Pick a brownfur transmuter buffer.... they can get to like 60+ str and 60-70AC morphed into dragon ... the dragon form keep the trip from say ... lepoard or dog/wolf very very strong.
1 point in Use Magic Device might be interesting to dump all summon items and utility wands on a companion to free up slots.
A sohei level and a bulwark horse to ride not only helps Seelah a lot with her lack of mobility in the battlefield, but also makes her even tankier.
i do have a question about this ive been playing through and it seems that the only animal that gets visual armor is the wolf and only if you go order of the paw is this a bug or did they only code one armor for one mount for one subclass?
What is the class with the strongest animal companion? And is there any who can have more than 1 animal companion? The game is so complex
Well at least it wasn't just me then
I found that its when you reload the game in any manner...its fine for me up until that point.
I'm going to make a velociraptor with maximum use magic device, and get it to use scrolls, and you can't stop me!
how does mounted combat work with the turn based mode since while mounted your companion doesnt have a turn
In PF1e while mounted, your mount doesn't get a turn but your mounted character essentially uses your mount's speed to move. So, a 15ft speed halfling cavalier in medium armor riding a 40ft speed wolf wearing no armor is both tanky and maneuverable right at 1st level.
@@havokmusicinc it's also incredibly hilarious
@@havokmusicinc thanks for the reply it makes sense it should work like that but looking at reddit mounted combat its not working the way its supposed to be while in turn based and thats why i couldnt tell if my mount was attacking

Their intimidation DC will be way lower than a charisma based character + many demons git immunity to those shits
Very informative thanks for putting the time in
Thanks!, this one is pretty out of date though (From the beta actually) Here is a recent updated version that accounts for the changes since then: ua-cam.com/video/LdNHfaZCpoU/v-deo.html
I need help, i've picked Animal Companion on a few guys and i haven't been able to level them up. 2 dogs and a horse. That i can't throw armor on or nothing. What am i doing wrong. No video i've seen has been able to give me any answers.
What classes get an animal companion? Any differencer in those?
That's actually a pretty good point! I got caught out with my Arcane Rider, who supposedly gets an 'animal companion' as a class feature, but I didn't realise it would have to be a horse. I really wanted to ride a smilodon :( I am guessing Sohei and some other riding-focused classes are also restricted to just having a horse, which, while horses are cool in their own way, is actually kind of a letdown since many other companions (smilodon, bear, wolf, etc) are totally ridable once they size up at L7.
You could get a brown fur transmuter arcanist in party who could cast beast shape on your animal companion to make a hors ea smilodon
Nope. Just tested it (yay Inevitable Excess), and your pet is capped at 20 even if you take 40 levels of pet classes.
Damn that's a bug hopefully they don't fix lol
@@allanf931 Animal Domain treats you as a Druid for leveling purposes, there's no bug.
Spears count as lances last I heard, there's no literal lances
@@briane75 I think its specifically Longspear, but that's half remembered from a comment on Discord so I could very easily be wrong

I had a question regarding the feat Mythical Beast, I read somewhere that choosing this allows you to chose teamwork feats so that you don't actually have to raise INT to 3. Is what I read correct or was that bogus info on reddit?

So, to make one as a tank, strength based damager + bulwark? Will a leapard with bulwark be gimped?
Do anyone know how prestige classes work with mounted combat; do they still give your animals levels
I wish feat search scanned the descriptions as well as the titles. It would become a lot more useful.
2 years too late but are you able to mount the Monitor lizard? Idc if they're the most optimal or not I just wanna be able to ride a lizard into battle
They only grow to medium size which means your character has to be the small size category for it
@MortismalGaming sweet. Halflings my favorite class anyway. Demons will fear my Komodo of doom.

Multi-class one Beast Rider level and you can have whatever pet you like from level three.
Can you use all Cavalier abilities & Skills on any mount? Was wondering if you could use all the abilities & skills from a Cavalier on any mount. I want to go Azata Mythic Path and use the Dragon as my mount.
It should work yeah
@@MortismalGaming Cool. Thanks.
I need some help: Could anyone help me with a max tank build and equipment for a paladin's horse?
Wondering if you go with the Legend Mythic Path if your Animal Companion can go beyond level 20
I don't think so, maybe if you stacked two classes that get mounts maybe
That was my first idea too after seeing the video for legendary mythic path and now this one. :)
I think giant centipede is not medium. I've tried a few times with a halfling to mount it and it won't let me. So I am guessing it needs to get it's size boost and then you can mount it. FWIW my halfings riding a boar or a smilodon is worth the price of the game on its own!
You can't do it in certain places I've heard, that might be your issue
@@MortismalGaming Yeah, there are cinematic or story beat places that won't let you mount or remove you from it. But the centipede can't seem to do it anywhere I've gone by level 3 so far :(
I heard that if you multiclass 2 classes with animal companion, the animal doesn't lose out on levels. Is this true?

No, maybe with a Respec I guess i haven't tried it
What is the reach of the companions? If I have a reach weapon, will my mount also be able to reach the target?
Seems that way yeah, I havent had any issues with it
In Kingmaker at least, the best companion was always the smilodon.
(A halfling riding a leopard would be super cool, though!)
If you were playing full on combat maneuvers (which I rarely did) I guess wolf would not be too bad, since it trips on bite, so you could go with tandem trip feats and so on, but IMO battles get too big too fast for a trip here and there to be more than just 'kinda nice'.
