  • Adventures with Albert Moote and his 1959 B120 4x4 Travelall "Kloog"
Albert's purchase of his beloved Travelall in 1959 represented the beginning of popularizing Full size truck base SUV's in America.
In 1959 International Harvester did something that other manufactures had not commented to doing.,which was to market their "Full sized" SUV's to the consumer. Although it wasn't an overnight success. But the market from that point on was changed forever and it SUV never went back to just vocational vehicles.

I was assigned to drive an International Travelall configured like a bus to shuttle people up and down a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada from Sugar Bowl to Donner Pass and I80 in who were snowed in under major snowfall in extreme blizzard conditions over deep snow. The tires were chained up. It's my only on day experience driving one and I'll never forget how incredibly awesome the truck performed under seemingly impossible conditions. Was it a deisel? I think it was. I jumped in and had to figure out the gear shifters and transfer case controls without any explanation. It was a manual. That truck literally explained itself to me and thrived im the elements. I'm sure that if it was driven on a sunny dry day it would have been underwhelming. It was epic and all of the passengers were thrilled as well. We were driving in a deep slot of plowed single lane in pretty much a dark total whiteout with wind strong enough at one point to move the truck. I'm still awestruck by the capacity of the Travelall.

A 1960 Travelall has been in my family for 50 years (near Morro Bay, where some of this was filmed), and this documentary brings tears of joy to my eyes!

This was fantastic. That truck is a beast in the snow! How he engineered the spare tire at the end of the video is cool as heck.

A great lifelong friend and mentor. Al was one of a kind and he will be missed...mostly by those that took advantage of him. I wonder where the Kluge is now...

Jerry, Koogle is with me, I’m carefully refreshing the engine the way Al and I talked about before he passed. Should be back on the road this fall :)

Although I've never driven an International Travelall, nor has anyone in my family, I do remember seeing these SUVs when I was a boy. I found them more interesting than the Chevy/GMC Suburban and Chevy Blazer/GMC Jimmy. :)
