I worked at an entry-level "lazy girl" office job throughout all of the pandemic and was making $21, left making $23 per hour. Went back to grad school thinking I was making the most logical next step to increase my salary and hopefully move out by myself. Recently graduated, been looking for positions for over a year because times are tough / tight and I hate feeling like a burden on my parents. All of the positions that I've applied to that have actually reached back out for an interview have offered me $12-13 per hour and that's after weeks of back and forth emailing, "personality" tests and waiting. I've even accepted low pay offers, just anything is fine right now. Haven't gotten any call-backs.

Wow! That’s honestly horrible. Having a masters degree and getting paid $12-$13 an hour is truly insulting. I’m so sorry you’re going through that. Never think you’re a burden tho to your parents. The job market is just not where it was at. Many people are going through the same thing you’re going through.

This is so relatable and I really appreciate your honesty. Ive never struggled like i have this year post grad.. i got really high marks and certificates and awards. Thought i was all set. I networked. Volunteered. Did internships. And then when i graduated things were not lining up. Im grateful now to have my job i fought so hard for, but because of budget cuts in public health.. i was one of 3.5% of applicants to get the job.. and it pays pennies. Its rough out there. We are all swimming against the stream together

I never thought how many other people are in the same situation as me. You deserve so much more and it’s so insane how our job market arrived to this point where you need lots of certifications, awards, etc. to receive a job that doesn’t pay all that well.

How true. The amount of times it takes to make a ten minute video can be palpating.

I'm working at Walmart, not because I want to, but because no other jobs want me even jobs related to my major. I've been stuck without a job since July and it was very stressful staying afloat on just my boyfriend's pay. But I've just now gotten a job at Walmart, but the amount of time it took and effort into finding a job that liked me, especially with a good resume was ridiculous.

what's happening right now is like 50s when TV started becoming affordable and started replacing radio more and more as the #1 medium
nowadays is that transition on steroids

Totally agree with you! It’s hitting a very hard transition and each week some new layoff is happening in the tv/media space.

From someone who quit their job from mental health issues, regret it, took 8 months to get another job (by saying the hiatus was due to travel) you’ll get there. Put it into the universe and hang in there

7:40 OMG I can so relate to this with the fashion industry 😥 at the moment I switched industries and doing administration FT. It's temporary since I'm pivoting careers, but I'm definitely going back to fashion.
I also had a hard time finding work earlier this year (after working for 10 years for 1 company), which is how I ended up taking the FT gig I have now. Everything is changing 😥😥

I really feel this girl as someone who lost their FT job in May but in finance let me say its not just your industry. Also working PT and so grateful for the bosses in this other industry that took a chance on me but i havent been able to find anything full time again despite months of searching

Thank you for sharing your story. It reminds me of the 2008 recession. I finished undergrad at the same time the recession was happening. I had done a few internships before completing my degree. I will say, that I didn't understand the importance of networking and probably missed out on some opportunities. However, I applied to every job that I believed I qualified for. I could land interviews but I still could not land the job. I eventually returned to doing internships since many people told me I didn't have enough work experience. After several years of struggling to land full-time work, I finally made it. I'm still working at the same place even after getting my master's degree due to the tough labor market. I'm now at the point of betting on myself.
From what you shared in your video, I feel that you are capable of doing well for yourself and I think you should bet on yourself and continue to make content. That is the advice I would give my younger self.

Good luck its definitely a hard industry to crack. Financially may be up and down but i know a lot of artists that have made it work but it's not gonna be that straightforward road you may have imagined? ❤

Got laid off during the pandemic. Now I just do gig work after too many rejection from jobs I was more than qualified for even if I knew someone there.
Fortunately I did double my money in the stock market so I do make about $700 a month in dividends.

@@CarlyHenriquez thank you. I appreciate the concern. One good thing is gig work gave me the flexibility to go to Japan for a month and now I want to try teaching English and moving out there. Sometimes there's opportunity in tragedy and life can lead one to unexpected places.

On the other hand there is definitely more of an ability for small creators then ever before. Its just hard cause without the support of an institution/company its definitely harder to get started/ more of a financial risk
