    For those of you who want to go above ISO 1600, there is a grain/noise remover plug-in called Neat Video, it makes a really good job removing noise when using high ISOs like 3200 and 6400, just be careful not to abuse from it since it can make your image softer, but adding a little sharpness can help fixing it!

    THANK YOU! oh god, I've been looking for tips for low light film all week and all I find is for still photography... too bad I found your video this late, but I'm so glad at least one person in youtube (a video website for goodness sake) is making tutorials for this kind of issues.

    I am learning to shoot video in the New Zealand bush where virtually everything is low light conditions. You guys have helped me out so much. You have the best, simplest explanations. Keep up the good work.

      +meddice I again watched this video and your other low light video and went out and practiced in the bush. Awesome results. I am shooting with a Canon EOS 600D (T3i), 18 -55 kit lens and Canon 50mm 1.8 lens. I am mostly using my 18 - 55 kit lens and by playing around with the Shutter Speed, ISO and Aperture I am getting results I previously thought I could not obtain without artificial lights. A key point that helped me was your tip about shooting at 30 to 50 Shutter Speed. That got me thinking and slowing the shutter speed to let more light in. Thanks guys.

    I've got a Zoom H1 and a Zoom H4. H4 is great for the XLR inputs, H1 is great for the price and portability. Can't say I know enough about the Tascam but I cannot do without my Zooms. You can also use the H1 handheld like a mic which is cool too.

    both are good and they are actually better working together. I got an h4n when it came out. Love it, but truth be said, even though it has a pretty good built in mic it's mainly a recorder. It's meant to have the actual good mics connected to it so you get a good quality sound both in terms of the physical capture itself and the internal quality. If you're lazy, don't have big stuff planned any time soon, and can't afford a zoom and a mic (like Rode) just go with the mic.

    Great tutorial, I got a DSLR recently with a lens that goes down to 3.5 and I've been able to shoot good quality low light footage by keeping the F-Stop at 3.5 ISO at 1600 and shutter speed at 30 but what I was wondering is how to you go from having a low F-Stop sharp background to a low F-Stop blurred background. What makes it blur vs what makes it sharp. OK thanks allot and keep up the good work

    Oh, I'm surprised the H4n isn't considered the final mic. I thought at that price, it'd be good enough. :D haha. But it makes sense, as I have seen it used as a recorder with a boom mic connected to it, on a shoot.
    You very last sentence mentions, "..just go with the mic." If you could clarify that statement for me. Did you mine in the in-camera mic, for the time being? Thanks.

  • @huyked
    @huyked 11 років тому

    Thanks, Ross. Thanks for the note about the sound too. I'm debating about getting a Rode VideoMic Pro, or a Zoom H4n for my D800. I'm lazy, so the Rode will be nice. But then again, I think you can attach the H4n to input directly into the camera. Plus the H4n is more versatile... eh, I think I answered my own question. lol. The thing with the H4n, you don't have that elastic dampener band like the Rode. What do you think about the Tascam vs. the Zoom?

  • @bluefilmsltd
    @bluefilmsltd 9 років тому +1

    The main issue I have with these 18--55mm kit lenses is the shifting aperture. If it wasn't for that, low light shooting wouldn't be THAT bad. But the aperture changes really put a downer on it, so as videographers, we are forced to use set apertures. I love prime lenses for that reason, but I am also aware that I DO need a zoom on certain occasions, particularly live concerts and such.

    I don't know if you can set a min/max for using ISO in video mode but I could be wrong. Letting the ISO auto adjust isn't that big of a deal in sunlight, but it is a big deal doing night shoots. Always, always, always, do manual mode. It takes some time to learn and there are considerations, but once you get the feel for it there's only 3 things to remember. ISO, Shutter Speed, and f-stop

    I really love my old (made in 1971) Nikkor-S 50mm f/1.4 manual, which I just got for US$80-- It really does quite well in low light, and I've been having fun with it in most light conditions. :) Just got a variable ND to go with it, too. And yes, while the kit lenses are good, this old manual is my favourite of my 4 lenses! :)
    I'll never afford a Nikkor Noct, though- That's my dream low-light lens...

    True. Everything that is too much (too loud/too bright etc) isn't captured decently, sometimes even at all. if it's too little however.. Ex: A voice might be only audible with speakers but you hear it. That means you can bring it up, cause the info it's there. Same with everything else, like darker areas in video. Unless it's full on black, like a turned off tv (exagerating so you guys have an idea..), there's something there to fetch.
    Vote up so everyone that has this doubt can see.

    A great tutorial..But one more thing I'd like to ask you guys is something that may not be directly related to the above video. While shooting a moving subject on a dslr, I have experienced difficulties in keeping the subject in focus. As in if my camera is steady and the subject is moving to and from in front of the camera, I somehow seem to lose focus on the auto mode. And I am sure manually focusing requires a lot of practice. can you please make a tutorial on how to practice manual focusing.

    I have learned so much from all your vids on DSLR filming... thank you!
    One question, I will be doing a city trip and have decided to force myself into leaving the camcorder home and trying to use the DSLR (and a gopro when I can't be bothered..). My question is, let's say you're sitting on a boat tour, like in Paris or German, or Chicago river cruises, and you want to just film the surrounding area. Not bothering with depth of field. Is there a general Aperture number I could set it on just to have pretty much 'everything' in focus? What I'm maybe asking is... what is the least trouble setting I could set it at, when filming daytime & depth of field is not an issue. Idem for nighttime.

    Ist f/2.0 nicht bereits eine zu große Blende um damit noch ernsthaft filmen zu können? Damit ist gemeint, dass bei f/2.0 die Schärfe des Bilds nicht schon zu gering ist um bei näherem Betrachten des Videos noch Details erkennen zu können?
    Bei dem Canon FD 85mm 1:1.2 in Kombination mit der 600D, wirk das Bild von Blende f/1.4 bis f/2.2 etwas unscharf. Ist es daher wirklich ratsam beim Filmen unter f/2.8 zu gehen?

    Danke für die Antwort, doch nehmen wir an, es handele sich um ein wie auch im Video gezeigtes Vintage-Objektiv, dan geht auch etwas Schärfe durch die Adapterlinse verloren.
    Viele Anbieter bieten als Adapter von EF auf FD nicht komplett auf die Objektive abgestimmte Adapter an. Auch bei den teuren Modellen wie von Hama für 140 Euro bleibt immer noch ein Rest Unschärfe.

    For low light street walking videography, where you want both the lighted building facade in the background as well as the approaching pedestrians in the foreground both in focus, would you shoot close to wide open but choose a certain focal length lense? I have the 12-32mm Lumix kit lens, the 14-140mm zoom, and the Sigma 1.4 16mm lens. Other than trying each one out, I thought maybe someone has experimented already, and can advise. Thanks.

    These tips are awesome and everything, but I still need help :/ I'm using a t3i with the 18-55mm kit lens (all I can afford, being a broke college student) and the lowest the aperture can go is 5.0. Even with the ISO at 800 I'm still getting grain in my video in the shadows! I don't get this I see people with the same camera as me with NO grain in their video how is that even possible?!

    • @dmdivers
      @dmdivers 10 років тому +5

      With that 18-55mm lens you've no choice but to use it at its widest focal length of 18mm so the aperture is at f3.5 - even then you're not going to be able to get the ISO low enough to reduce all the noise. Try filming at night with as much ambient light around, or just bite the bullet and save up for a Canon 50mm f1.8
