- Call of Duty 2 is a 2005 first-person shooter video game and the second installment in the critically acclaimed Call of Duty series. It was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Konami in Japan and Activision in the rest of the world. The game was released on October 25, 2005 for Microsoft Windows PCs and on November 22, 2005 as a launch game for the Xbox 360 in Europe, Australia and South America, and later in Japan. Other versions were released on other platforms, including mobile phones as well as Pocket PCs.
The game is set during World War II and the campaign mode is experienced through the perspectives of four soldiers: one in the Red Army, one in the United States Army, and two in the British Army. It contains four individual campaigns, split into three stories, with a total of twenty-seven missions. Activision officially announced the game on April 7, 2005 in a press release. Many features were added and changed from the original Call of Duty. The most notable change is the regenerating health. Additions include an icon that indicates a nearby grenade about to explode.
The game was met with positive reception. Critics praised the game particularly for the graphics, sound and the regenerating health system. The Xbox 360 version sold over 250,000 copies in its first week, and had sold 2 million copies by January 2008.
that mission defending hill 400 was one of the biggest reasons this game is in my top 5 favorite games of all time, and my favorite world war 2 game. It lasted five minutes, but it felt like 5 hours.
This mission was impossible in hard mode
@@ΟΙνδιάνος
i made it in Veteran mode
just use smoke grenades, they will help to sneak away or atleast buy you sometime
I was 8 when I played that mission. When those allied P51 flew over my head I fucking pissed myself

@@hieunguyenrileygekko the amount of grenade....jesus Christ
Best COD ever of all time and this game has aged really well and holy god I just realized that this game is 10 years old.
This October it will be 13 yrs old... Wow that went by fast.
@@TWORATZ103 lmao
Now its 15 years
it´s now 15 years old
When this was the best it surely was good.
This is the prime example of what the actual war-themed FPS are missing. A lenghty and varied campaign with tons of fun.
And If you're prissy with the grenades. Try to play COD WAW on veteran difficulty. The enemies throw them like fucking marbles....
Great Review as always
Modern CoDs provide you ingame cinematics with no interaction at all, narrow shooting galleries with nothing to interest you with and cliché stories without any substance
Correction: Call of Duty 2 was never released on PS3.
Other than that, great review as usual!
*****
Because it was old. Call of Duty 2 was a launch title for the Xbox 360, the PS3 came out some time later and Activision no doubt wanted to concentrate on Call of Duty 3.
*****
Hilariously, Call of Duty 3 wasn't released on PC for some reason.
*****
It wasn't? I seriously didn't know. Wonder why.
***** Yeah and it sucked compared to COD 2
Taz Gator because it was a rushed messed.
The best COD ever. The sniper level and the truck riding missions were absolutely memorable. The real golden days of the franchise, once they moved to the Modern Warfare stuff, downhill started.
+Psycho Machinery
Black Ops 2 was fun honestly.
After Black Ops 2, franchise dies in my opinion
Couldn't disagree more.
This was the first FPS game ive ever played when i was 7 years old. So much Nostalgia in this game especially Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault.
Call of Duty 2 is, in my opinion, the best CoD game and is one of my favourite games. My favourite missions of the game is the 2 first of Point Du Hoc where you attack and then later defend the point, the 2 last of Hill 400, the mission where you defend against an enemy assault and then counter attack and the British mission where you attack the Germans defences. Its these missions which is more open and grand that are better than the more urban missions. Charging up a hill at a bunker with God knows how many getting killed around you and then you turn that around and you're the defender, its those types of missions that are the most exciting.
couldn't agree more. I played this game on multiplayer non stop for about two years in total, and plus the mods and custom maps kept this game alive.
Roman The MP seemed a bit odd to me. I joined a server where I was a guest? And either I was a super soldier among men or they were bots. And there were no chatting going on which makes wonder more if it was bots.
Aragorn195 I haven't played this game since 2009 so I don't know what has been changed or not. Its either bots, veterans of this game, or hackers (even though I have never encountered a servers with bots before, and rarely encountered hackers) But I remember the people were really social. Did you try the multiplayer recently?
Roman That was not too long ago
Too repetive, i enjoyed it more than waw but thats it. The campaign is borring.
This game deserves to be honored, it's brilliant in AI programming. Even if there is no player present in free cam mode the battle between npc's will go on in many parts of the game. Difficult to find a modern game which can deliver so much accuracy.
Best CoD game so far. Still has an active online community.
Balthazar damn straight, still playin it til this day, finished the campaign on veteran too
Not anymore, the online is pretty much dead on Steam
Fuck it. I'm just going to come out with it. Call of Duty 2 is better than BO3. Imo
COD 2 is one of the best ones IMO
I think out of all of the cods black ops 1 is the absolute best other that world at war on pc
To be honest, CoD 4 is my favorite. Black Ops 1 is my third favorite.
+Technical shoebox black ops is utter shite mate
XD stop bandwagoning kid, BO3 is a better game than any of us could ever make smh
no other media or activity can help you grasp your memories again for real as playing a video game. It's like diving into a photo album and reversing the time. Still watching the review in 2017, enthralled and excited as if it was released yesterday ... we've actaully lived a history; CoDs, Battlefields, MoHs, Wolfensteins ...
Best Call of duty ever made.
WAW was good but the levels weren't as good
Never thought of it that way, you're actually right!
waw was different. it is an amazing game still! but the sound design, gun play and immersiveness aren't on the same level as cod2
oh COD, back when you were good :(
i remember getting this when it first came out. i played Call of Duty (the original) before this & loved it, but when Call of Duty 2 came out i was simply blown AWAY.
I think CoD became infamous at MW2.
The days when his mic sounded like talking in a tin can.
Call of Duty 2 will always be the high-point of ww2 games, the polish and atmosphere has stood the test of time. If there ever was a perfect game this was and is it.
Is it me or CoD 2 looks better than newer CoDs
the graphics are quite horrible compared to the newer ones, but the size and scope of some of the missions/battles is the best I've seen in any FPS really, let alone the newer COD's.
SideShot its you
not just you lad its a fact ;)
Yeah, I think it's you.
Better than CoD WW2.
I quote this game everytime i'm talking about wwII fps
My fav war shooter by far...
Spot on with the review again. Pointing out the valid criticisms. Multiplayer is still populated very nice ww2 shooter like what I grew up with. Some great servers are: 198.23.130.50:28960 "wing and a prayer" 8.6.3.62.28960 "Potw clan u.s." great CTF. 72.5.195.82:28960 "A.All Weapons" Great TDM. So funny I used to go to my friends house after school when this first came out to throw potatoes.
Kosovo Report This is why games that can be used for multiplayer independently of any bullshit 'PSN' or Xbox Live networks are the best...
Immersive and breathtaking.. Thank you for giving this game a fair review and avoiding the all too common "modern military shooters suk lolz" sweeping attitude that 99% of oldschool FPS fans have, especially regarding the regenerating health system
This game needs in 2020 Co-op mode / Gore and the ability to throw back grenades 10/10
I see you are a fan of my clans server! This game is legendary, I am glad you reviewed it.
Who's watching this in 2020?!!
Halo was the game that popularized health regeneration.
+Yellow Lives Matter halo combat evolved was the first game to use health regen on consoles not call of duty 2
And still had health regen it's a bit more complicated then how call of duty 2 did it but it still had it first
+Yellow Lives Matter yes it did half of your health regenerates the other half did not it was a hybrid
I know that
Shields are simply a part of your health
I got this today with summer sales
Old school CoD on PC back in the day was brilliant. One of my fave gaming experiences all time.
This was my first Call Of Duty but also the game that introduced me to World War II, I was 6 years old when I first played COD 2 and even to this day the old Call Of Duty's look impressive.
This is my Favorite COD. The series barely changed after this in terms of game play. Each new title just slightly improved the graphics over the previous.
COD Black Ops was the last COD game I brought. And the only one I played Multiplayer a lot. Because it was at I time in my life when I lived with 2 mates who own PC's and we would set up in the lounge on the weekends.
I got pretty good at the MP. I remember playing Nuke Town and I equipped Lightweight, Sleight of Hand & Marathon with the SPAS-12, And as soon as the match started I sprinted straight to the enemy side house as I watched all their grenades fly over my head.
Entering through the front door I immediately gun down 2 taking a shot to the arm. Vision slightly red I was still able notice the guy entering from the Garage and fired 2 shots. First hit the door frame but the second hit the mark.
I quickly tossed a grenade upstairs as I headed to the back door, scoring 2 kills. Now outside I turned to right to find 2 enemies having a fire fight with allies on the other side of the map. I dispatched them with ease. Then suddenly I was ambushed from behind taking several shots. Thanks to the sleight of hand perk and a moment of Ultra Instinct. I side stepped left, dropped hard to the ground spinning 180 degrees while loading a shell into the breach which was ready to fire straight into the chest of my assailant.
The next Guy would've easily had me if he was not momentarily AFK thinking he was safe. I quickly ended him which alerted his mate that was protecting him. Whom I was originally going to kill before being startled by the AFK guy standing in the bush, to turn around and POW! right in the kisser.
I then proceeded to drop Rolling Thunder on them as the respawned on the opposite side of the Map. Then hopped on the Minigun of the UH-1 Huey and had fun mincing them up. Once back on the ground I called in the SR-71 Blackbird so I knew their exact locations and continued my SPAS-12 assault.
I eventually died. But the score at the end of the round was 42 kills and 1 death.
I agree with the regenerating health. There's nothing wrong with it, but it has its place in certain games. For example, regenerating health in a game like Counter-Strike would be awful.
I remember playing COD2 in high school, alot of fun times and D-Day was one of my favorite missions. This is one of the best Call of Duty games and it was at its finest. This alone is better than Vanguard. I recently bought this game from a Vintage Game Store last month and I passed the game. It looks great on Xbox Series X 😎🎮🤘🏽
4:55 Well, that's why there's a 'cooking grenades'-mod for COD2. While a 4 second fuse is a safety feature in terms of a fumble, it's really hard to manually give a grenade any sort of significant 'hangtime', so, if one uses it as per the manual, the more experienced enemy is afforded a window to do something about it (either run away or chuck it back). That's why, if one manages to get up next to a pill box (or up onto an enemy armoured vehicle), one peels the spoon (don't let it ping or the game is up), counts one, one thousand, two one thousand, three one thou... and chucks it in.
For me , this is the best ww2 version of call of duty games.
Actually, the game didn’t come out on PS3 because the console didn’t come out until 2006.
I actually just bought this game and thoroughly am enjoying it. I was surprised you hadn't reviewed it earlier.
Ehhh.... Hate to say it but last time I played through this game it was a bit of drag. Don't really feel it holds up, the repetition really got to me and it really had that sense of "I've seen this before but better." I then moved on to Call of Duty 3 and was surprised by how much more I enjoyed myself with that one despite not being fond of it in the past. Perhaps it was just because the characters were entertaining.
On the topic of regenerating health being necessary. I'm just gonna say this.
Medics. Half-Life and Opposing Force had AI that could health you. Why not have medics and troops designated to toss the player ammo or health when they needed it? It would at least be a little more immersive than "sit on your ass for a minute."
Changing the difficulty level changes more than the amount of damage the enemy can take. The enemy does seem to have more tactics and the game play is much more enjoyable....at least on hardened level, veteran is just annoyingly difficult, especially without the ability to quick save, and as mentioned in the review, the next to ridiculous situation with grenades. I do think though that the A.I Of your team mates is pretty good and they do take out enemies and advance to support you.... but when you start to expect them to perform they will let you down... one annoying thing not mentioned about their behavior is them advancing behind the enemy’s line...but not taking them out....what this means is you will just think they are enemy and shoot them....but friendly fire ends the game....frustrating. This seemed to happen a lot in the American campaign.
It was never released on PS3 though
Early 2000s was probably best years for gaming that will never come again :(
COD2 was the shit back then. All my friends played it at home. When we met in school or in private we talked about the singleplayer campaign. About the epic battles and set pieces the single player delivered. Which is strange though, because today nobody would every talk about the SP again and rather share their multiplayer experiences. Which is a sign for how degenerated todays COD singleplayer campaigns became, I guess?? But if you take a look back and see how COD2's campaign delivered, then you can't blame players for no longer caring nowadays.
Excellent review. Im still playing this. My only negative would be the lack of difference in weapons... A pistol is just as powerful as a BAR....
This is one of the best and most revolutionary FPS-games of all time. A true classic, and one that I'll forever hold near and dear. I've played the campaign more times than I can count, and whilst it can't beat that of Black Ops, MW or WaW, it's still one of the best in the series (10x better than MW3 & Ghosts; also better than Classic, AW and Blops2. I'm torn on the MW2 campaign though, because gameplay-wise it's unbelieveably incredible, but the story has so many gapingly huge plot holes that it kinda ruins it) Anyways: COD2 is an incredible game that re-defined modern FPS games and more importantly, it re-defined the COD-series in a way that lead directly to COD4, which, as we all know, is by far the most influential FPS ever (ofc discounting the games which started the genre as a whole such as DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D and CS among others)
+Thomas Torrissen In all honesty the Modern warfare series should have ended after the first game because that game was perfect since it featured a campaign that is based on events that could actually happen while the campaign in MW2 and MW3 were too much like a michael bay film to be taking seriously with Russia invading the United States and starting WW3 still both games are good but nothing can beat the original Modern warfare.
When Call of Duty was cool
Guapo the Wapo except that the Italians and Japanese were mostly forgotten,
The Silo was insanely hard on Veteran. Had to restart the whole damn thing because of an inconvenient checkpoint during the final sniping bit.
I don't think COD 2 was released on the PS3
I absolutely loved this game. I played the campaigns so many times and I played a lot in the local multiplayer split-screen.
Playstation 3?!
What?!
Where?
I haven't seen any CoD 2 on PS3.
I'm replaying this right now on Veteran, it's actually a fun challenge and while it isn't as good as the newest cod for a 10+ year old game I'm still pretty surprised at how good it is
I am suprised you didn’t talk about the weird ending. It wasn’t really a expected and it just sort of ended after a normal battle
It's 2020 and we're still playing the multiplayer with my mates.
I have went through the campaign many times. My personal favorite was the British campaign in N-Africa
It's definitely not boring on veteran difficulty. It's extremely challenging on some parts!
Call of Duty at its best. Also, good review man, the grenades were really annoying. Will you make a review on CoD: World at War? It's also one of the better CoD games out there.
FYI this game was never released for PS3.
Never came out for PS3
That's the same thing I said.
Game 2005
PS3 JP-2006
PS3 US-2006
PS3 EU/AuS 2007
I think you're confused. In 2006 Call of Duty 3 came out on all platforms.
CoD2 was PC and 360 only.
***** 3 wasn't on all platforms. it was a console exclusive, and I think exclusives shouldn't exist.
there are console exclusives, and I think exlusives are very anti-gamer. its basically saying "yeah, if you don't pay 400$ for our game system you cant play this really amazing game."
COD2 was and still is an exceptional game till this day. Whoever gives this game a hard time, and claims that it killed the FPS genre is full of crap. This was one of the last good WW2 era FPS which I really enjoyed and remember till this day, however it didn't surpassed MOH Allied Assault which is my most favorite.
Can you review some n64 shooters? Goldeneye, perfect dark, operation wind back etc??
Back before Activision pulled too many strings in its development and marketing. Yep. CoD 2 is CoD at its finest.
I'd get it if it actually went on sale for more than 50% to 75% off. The game isn't worth $15 or $10 (or especially the base $20!) friggin dollars by nowadays, there are so many other games I could get for those prices.
I am still a nostalgia gamer, and always play older school shooters and the like, and this is my favourite of all the cod games, besides cod WAW and Cod 1, just for sheer nostalgia. i love ur reviews, and i actually still own and play half of these games, they are just damn enjoyable, instead of all this quick time event, button mashing, MICHAEL BAY-A THON we call modern gaming. and i loved the classic cod games, they rocked, but as soon as modern warfare 2 came around, it went downhill. the series just needs to friggin die already. the series has sucked so much to the point where im almost embarassed to admit that i actually loved the series (up to WAW)
I loved some of the missions in this game, but whenever I go back to play it again I get bored within a couple of hours. The visuals stand up pretty well and some of the machine guns feel really good to use, but as you said, it's repetitive, and other games provide better entertainment. It was far better optimised than the recent CoD games at least, back when they cared about the PC version more than any other.
Cod 1 and 2 are my fav for sure, so many hours on cod2 online to.
Personally the older call of duty games had something which games like advanced warfare and ghost dont simply because the campaign is about a regument of troops pushing onwards against all odds through hell and you really feel the sense of comraderie. This is why the marines and army rangers make the best parts of mw 1 and 2 for me.
My favourite 360 launch game made up for perfect dark zero been total crap
never came out on PS3 as it was a year old by the time the PS3 launched
I remember playing the demo, one of the Africa missions, thinking holy smokes this is amazing! And it was. Multiplayer was good and the weapon sounds were spot on.
"Don't rely to much on these guys cause they are dum as dog s***." Very well put my friend.
People give this game crap? It's one of my favorites in the series. One of the only games in the series that actually goes toe-to-toe with MOH (which was my favorite FPS series for many years).
I think you should go back to reviewing this game because a lot of zoomers don’t understand how little the gameplay evolved pass this entry, mainly up until Advanced Warfare which actually attempted to change the gameplay a bit. My first CoD was World at War and I didn’t play CoD 2 until my late teens. It blew my mind how identical it felt playing on PC to most of the games that came after and made me rethink the entire series.
I still play this game to this day, but seriously Call Of Duty, what happened to you.
this didn't come out on ps3, atleast not at first
This was probably my favorite multiplayer shooter ever. I even remember coming back after like a year at one time and some players even remembered me, which shocked me at the time although I did have an odd name, Arby's Oven Mitt! he will be missed.
this game is not 5-6 hours. Its more like 8-10 hours.
its about 3-4 hours.
@@TheOneTheyCallShandy maybe if you play it in one sitting on the easiest difficulty.
great game I still playing it!!!
Actually, grenades are super useful. However, you have to "cook" them before you throw them at anything close range.
Overall, great review. Really can't fault this game much. The regen health, like you said, makes sense for the way the game plays.
The only gripe for me is that the pace can get overwhelming at times. COD1 and MW1 had the slow missions and the "all hell breaks loose" ones, COD2 is the latter from the beginning to the end.
Can't cook nades in CoD2.
One of my favorite cod game of all time next to Black ops and cod 4 MW.
This was THE game back in my school days
Awesome review as always.
I was wondering if you could review Bungie's classic Marathon Trilogy? It's available as freeware on sourceforge.
Uhhhh, Halo popularized regenerating health first.
I don't know man, I couldn't find regenerating health in other games before CoD 2 released.
@@danwhowatches707halo 1 came out way before cod 2
Logic and common sense should then tell you…..
This game, like the men it's depicting, were truly the greatest generation. Back when CoD was at its peak, portrayed history uncensored, and came with no baggage.
I remember playing Call of Duty: World at World on the PS2 and I really enjoyed playing it. Will you do a review on that?
Get the PS3 version. It is much better...
+Pedro Granja there's not @===@
Tried the demo and COD 3, and found the series to be overrated and boring as fuck. Set piece after set piece where you progress in a linear fashion with your squad. Half of the time, they kill your target forcing you to seek out a new one, so you can have a fighting chance. They often get in your way when you are trying to shoot something. Military shooters just aren't my thing. I like to fight and explore on my own.
It's not a choice between health pack placement and regenerating health. Just give me something to DO to heal other than wait. Whether it's an inventory of medkits or bandaging (like FarCry 2-3), a triggered ability, or some combination of those, it's better than passively waiting on a timer.
Call of Duty 2 was the game that made me stop playing the Cod series for a long time..after years of medal of honor, cod came along which had the same core mechanics of scripted checkpoints and infinitely spawning enemies that personally I was getting tired of, in fact the first mission in africa where you fight in the alleyways of the coastal town was enough to bore me. Not so much the games fault as I had been recently introduced to ghost recon and hidden and dangerous and I realized tactical shooters were more to my liking. Then a friend gave me a copy of Hidden and Dangerous 2 as a gift and that game has had me hooked ever since. In fact I hope gggmanlives should do a review on the hidden and dangerous series, it has a very strong fanbase.
Just played this through on veteran really good game, lots of grenade spam though!
Please review Commandos: Strike Force!
Don't tell people they'll get their ass handed to them in MP, you're scaring them away! >:)
hey man did you ever think of cooking the grenades i do it all the time and i always get them even if they try to dodge it bryan t
dude, what you think about call of juarez series?
hope you will review it sometime
Brings back so many memories
It was a great game I remember when I was younger and picked this thing up.
Nice vid! Who is the woman at the start?
this is the first cod i ever played (just started my first playthrough today).
Out of all the COD games it has the greatest campaign enjoyable to replay many times. It's lengthy, challenging and has some amazing level layouts. COD4 Modern Warfare campaign was a joke
I loved this game as a kid. Plus by far my favourite cod game
Now you forgot the Irish guys that's with you all through the British Campaign he was pretty funny at times.
He's Scottish not Irish.
my bad
MACGRAGGOOOORRRRR :'D
"I'm doing my best, sir"
Best game in the series. Although i found the soviet campaign to be the least enjoyable.
I play the demo of this game a lot when I was a kid.
I liked the two tank missions in this one. You only face Panzer II light tanks, since any of the heavier German tanks would've been like bullet sponges to the light British tank you're driving.
