BTW, you don't want to fully charge the battery to 345V unless you have a fan blowing on the battery sticks as the battery's thermal management system is disabled. Just charging it to 310 volts should be enough to get the car started. Then just let the vehicle run and charge the battery until the ICE shuts off.
Life just got much easier for this. First, you can leave the HVTB in the vehicle, we ground down a torx bit to access the bolts on the front sides of the cover. You can get at the ones mid-side with channelocks. This is easier with the trim panels removed. Now for the HUGE time saver. You do NOT need to remove all those internal parts on the passenger side of the HVTB. On the driver side of the HVTB there is now a bundle of cables wrapped in gray foam where the charging circuitry was for the 2005-2008 models. Unwrap the foam. Ford left the connectors for that 05-08 charging circuitry on that cable. The gray one is positive and the black one is negative. They are on the ends of the wires in the orange split conduit that goes into the side of the battery trays. Connect your charging cable to those and you can charge the battery that way. This is now less than a one hour job and WAAAY easier. I left my cable permanently connected and ran in out the side of the HTVB with a safety cap on it.
I would very much like to know more about this. Where exactly is that gray cable? Do you connect it to the 12V battery like the 2008, or to the high voltage charger described in the video?

To get the "hard to get at" screws out so you don't have to remove the battery, get a HF $4 tamper proof torx set with a T30 torx and the HF $12 set of offset SAE ratcheting wrenches which includes a 1/4' wrench to fit on the T30 torx bit. Be sure to put a piece of electrical tape over the end of the bit before you slide it into the wrench. Otherwise you'll loose the bit. If you remove the side panels the screws will come out fast and easy.

Hi, the charger you recommend (used in the video) what hardware does it come with? Did you have to make your own connector to connect top battery and bottom battery? If you can share the information I would appreciate it!
The charger shown in the video is MEAN WELL HLG-120H-C350B or similar. This is big omission in an otherwise excellent video. Figuring out the charger and the connections is a really hard part that is completely glossed over. The charger is 430V and the battery is 350V or less. However this works because the internal resistance of the batteries and the charger keeps the current low. The connections to the battery have to be created; there is simply no off-the shelf terminals that will work especially for the bottom one that is like a tuning fork. We used large spike terminals that had to be formed into flat strips to stick in the terminal and alligator clips to connect them to the charger. The charger comes with no connectors. You even has to wire a house plug on the incoming side. Again...a lot of struggle that I wish was covered in the video.
I received the power supply on Friday night, connected it to the battery on Saturday. Charged and measued the voltage. Close to 353 volts. Installed on Sunday. Cleared the codes and started it up. Drove around for a while. I noticed a few things: The regenerative braking seens to boost voltage/charge more than just running. The SOC (state of charge) is only 60%. Don't know if that will improve given how old it is. I stopoed running it Sunday at 3pm. I will check voltage again this afternoon too see how well it holds.I also connected 2 wire leads to the contactor at the battery, ran them out through the cooling vent so that I could check the battery with my DVM.
Regen braking is running the traction motor in reverse and is capable of much higher charge currents then the engine-attached motor/generator. SoC is normally around 50%. You don't want it running higher than that regularly. This is NOT an electric vehicle. The battery is most efficient at the 40-50% SoC level, and you always need available storage to capture the regenerative braking energy, or it is lost and efficiency drops.

I have a 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid and it has all warning lights come up on the instrument cluster. It seems like the same problem you were having with your car. Is it better to buy a new battery and get it installed or to recharge the original battery?
Hello Dilawar, A new battery will cost you somewhere between $3000 and $5000. Probably almost the value of your Escape. Charging the original battery will be a lot cheaper with the method I was describing. Please make sure to follow all diagnostic steps before you decide to spend money. It is a Ford after all and can have a lot more problems than just an empty battery :-)
I understand what you did but my issue is where did you have the charger on the battery? I have a 2010 escape hybrid which not much changed if you can help me that would be remarkable! Thank you!
Why did you choose to take the HV battery out to charge it? Why didn't you use the HV battery recharge override button in the driver's compartment? That allows you to charge directly from the 12v battery/charger. It won't get it up to a high state of charge but it will get it to the voltage necessary to start.
My understanding is that the override button on the driver side is only previous year models (I believe 2005-2008). I checked on my 2009 and it doesn't have one.
@@Suspendedanimation007 Not only is the button not there, but Ford also removed the charger from the HVTB. There is now a cable wrapped in gray foam where the charger used to be.

Is he a idiot or could that be cause I’m sorta having same issue the light went back off but it keeps wanting to no crank no start at times had ignition replaced 2 years ago so that I don’t think could be the issue
you can disconnect the battery from the car. You dont need to remove it, it is just a pain to get the torx screws from the sides off. I had to grind down a bit to get the screws out.
I removed and charged the hybrid battery and placed back in car. I had over 350 volts on the battery when I reinstalled the battery. I drove for about a week and then the car shutdown again. I noticed that the charge indicator stayed in the middle range. I am not sure if the needle should move more than mine ins doing, staying midrange. Could this mean that while driving the hybrid battery is not recharging eventually discharging the battery so the car shuts down?
Hello Jesus, I am not an expert in this field, I don't have the answer, sorry. I only used the charger once to charge the battery pack of the Ford Escape. I sold the charger on ebay after that.
False. If you have a completely dead traction battery the engine will not start. The traction battery is what starts the engine. You need to charge it in order to get the car functioning properly.
Has anyone tried swapping a dead battery into an older model with the recharge button? I’ve got an 06 with the button that uses the 12v battery to charge the hybrid battery, and I’m thinking about buying an 09 with a dead battery. THANKS GUYS!
I used this in conjunction with the video and it all worked out fine... www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/mean-well-usa-inc/HLG-120H-C350A/7703905?s=N4IgTCBcDaIBIBkDiBaAjGADHFBhAzAKyYCCIAugL5A
Thank you so much for this great video. I have one question and one request if I may. on my 09 ford Escape hybrid, the Hybrid charge indicator (on the cluster) is almost in the middle but it still doesn't start. could the hybrid still need a charge? Also, would you write a brief instruction on how to attach the power supply to the Hybrid battery to the charge(I think the power supply you recommended has 3 wires) Thank you again
Hello Ramin, It is very hard to give you a remote diagnose of your no start condition. Is it cranking but not starting, or is it doing nothing? If it is doing nothing then I would start with the auxiliary battery health. If the car was sitting around for a long time this could be issue. You should get a reading of 12.6 volts. If the battery isn’t fully charged, it will diminish to 12.4V at 75%, 12V when it’s only operating at 25%, and down to 11.9V when it’s completely discharged. If the aux battery is OK, then I would go and check the Hybrid Battery. You can download "forscan" (forscan.org/) and connect an OBD reader to go from here. If the car is cranking but would not start, then there are 100 more things to check.
Regarding the charger: The charger has 3 wires on the input side. This is where you connect a plug that goes into your standard 120V outlet. The output side of the charger has only 2 wires. Blue is the minus side and brown the plus side. I hope this helps. You can buy my charger here: www.ebay.com/itm/264949908074. :-)
Hello! I really want one of these hybrid escapes. I was wondering the mileage of yours? I am worried about the hv battery, how long it will last if I purchase one with higher miles. I’ve seen the replacement pack is a lot of money and worry that an hybrid escape with 140k miles will need a battery sooner than later
Hello Jarred, We had ~ 250,000 miles on it. The battery pack was still functional. The low state of charge and the no start issue was my fault, I neglected the regular charging of the small 12V battery. I think after 10 years and high mileage the battery is a gamble.
Hello .. I have the same problem .. When I went to AAMCO repair shop and asked him whether I could recharge my hybrid battery. He said that your battery has 0v so it cannot be charged.. Is that true? What should I do? please help me
This is very sad. Same happened to me. I was looking around and would have been charged a lot of money for this repair.. Therefore I decided to DIY. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, maybe you can ask a friend for help. Please verify the 0V statement from the AAMCO tech, using Forscan. Good Luck.
Did you get a response to the question of being able to recharge a battery that shows 0 volts? I have the same, 0 Volts, have tried this recharge method, and it doesn't charge.
Thank you for the info... I like the vehicle but now I'm afraid to buy it since I hear that battery can go without warning and is over $3000 just for the battery... uuuhhggg I'm on a fixed income of sorts I really like the looks of the vehicle and saw one for sale I need a vehicle asap.
Hello Kathy, Overall the Ford Escape is a good choice with or without the hybrid technology. It is pretty reliable and the fuel economy is good on the 4-cylinder non-hybrids as well. Maybe you can find a 2008 or 2009 with the 4-cylinder engine and low mileage? The Mercury Mariner is basically the same thing. Best of luck, GG

I live in TX but am in Dayton Ohio because I was caring for my Mother who recently passed away. My 2009 Escape Hybrid was parked for a month because my Mom could not be left alone. When we finally transferred my mom to hospice, I discovered that the hybrid battery was dead and in a saga I call "4 tow trucks and a hybrid" was told by the dealership that to replace the battery would be $14,000. I haven't been able to find anyone in the area to work on the car. Does anyone know anyone in the area who could help me with this so I can return to my home in Texas?
The battery had to come out in order to open the lid. I was not able to get to two screws on the side. But if you can open the side screws then you can leave the pack in the car. If you then run a cable out from under the lid then you would be able to recharge the battery when you need. This would require a permanent connection somewhere at the relay. I have not done this since I am concerned of having a 350V plug sticking out of the battery.
Yes, you can.. You can do this with the HVTB in place. Directions, including how to assemble the charger, are detailed in a thread at greenhybrid.com in a thread located in the Ford Cars: Ford Escape Hybrid subforum. entitled "HV Jump Start." There are also directions for permanently attaching a charging wiring harness to the HVTB so that charging set-up in the future would be a matter of 2-3 minutes.

@@JoeCarlinCA Major bummer! (And an excusable on the part of the engineers.)
How did you find out it doesn’t exist on the 2009?? Maybe it’s just in a different place?
@@Suspendedanimation007 I've got an 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid. I've been told there isn't one and the dealer said there isn't one.
@@Suspendedanimation007 Not only is the button not there, but Ford also removed the charger from the HVTB. There is now a cable wrapped in gray foam where the charger used to be.
I have a 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid but the jump start push button stopped working. I’m not sure what triggered it to stop working. It doesn’t light up anymore when I press it. Are you aware of what would make that button stop working?
Thanks so much. Was looking for where to connect charger. Worked great! Thank you
I am sorry about that, I don't have material that would show the connections more detailed. Please check out the videos listed in the description below. Maybe this will help. Thank you for watching.
how do you charge it ? what did you use to charge it with and ?

Hello, such a thousand apologies I have the same problem ford escape 2009, I already charged the battery 360 volts but the same problem persists, it does not start me, which could be I will thank you very much.
Hi Nolvin, it could be a lot of things. I recommend to watch some videos from FordTechMakuloco on his channel.

Thanks for your info. Can you please tell me ...Can I use this charger for my prius c 2014 ?
I only used the charger once to charge the battery pack of the Ford Escape. I sold the charger on ebay after that. No idea if it would work anywhere else.

Can I use this on a 2010 toyota prius
I had a check engine code come up but the person at auto zone said it was showing it was the front battery? Is he a idiot or could that be cause I’m sorta having same issue the light went back off but it keeps wanting to no crank no start at times had ignition replaced 2 years ago so that I don’t think could be the issue
Is there a particular Barrett charger needed to charge that battery or is it just any battery charger?
You need a high voltage (at least 350V, low amperage charger. A Mean Well HLG-120H-C350A or B will work.
Why do I need to remove the battery from the car. Can’t this be done with it still in the car?
Or is there a danger to it being connected?
you can disconnect the battery from the car. You dont need to remove it, it is just a pain to get the torx screws from the sides off. I had to grind down a bit to get the screws out.
Do you NOT have the button behind the left side little panel?
That reset button does the same thing.
Perhaps this is what was removed in 2009 model?
The button is not present in post-2008 models
@@MrFafolaktik you have a pic of the fuse panel?
Not only was the button removed, the charging circuitry was removed from the HVTB for 2009-2012. There is an empty space where it use to be.
Is your AC OK. The computer takes the HVTB offline if it's temperature exceeds 100 degrees.
What kind of charger?
is this charger for NIMH batteries ? or lead acid only please reply
Thank you goat info

Thank you. I have a 2007 hybrid too. How can I find the software for scanner? How can I contact you by Instagram? Thank you very much 😊

Hi what kind of charger did you use?
Look above in the comments under the video.

If you have a scan tool that can clear the codes, that'll get it starting then you can just let the gas engine recharge the HV
What kind of charger did you use
I used this in conjunction with the video and it all worked out fine... www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/mean-well-usa-inc/HLG-120H-C350A/7703905?s=N4IgTCBcDaIBIBkDiBaAjGADHFBhAzAKyYCCIAugL5A
Thank you so much for this great video.
I have one question and one request if I may.
on my 09 ford Escape hybrid, the Hybrid charge indicator (on the cluster) is almost in the middle but it still doesn't start. could the hybrid still need a charge?
Also, would you write a brief instruction on how to attach the power supply to the Hybrid battery to the charge(I think the power supply you recommended has 3 wires)
Thank you again
It's going to be more age than mileage. I have a 2006, battery still works. All it needs is enough charge to start the car.
We made our own battery charger from parts off amazin
What OBD reader did you use exactly with forscan?
Hi Lukas, I used a generic OBD reader, bought on Amazon: Bafx Products Wireless Bluetooth Obd2 Scanner Diagnostic Code Reader. It was around $25.

What is your battery voltage and SOC?
Hi, SOC = low. Voltage was ~ 300V.

Simple and clear
I live in TX but am in Dayton Ohio because I was caring for my Mother who recently passed away. My 2009 Escape Hybrid was parked for a month because my Mom could not be left alone. When we finally transferred my mom to hospice, I discovered that the hybrid battery was dead and in a saga I call "4 tow trucks and a hybrid" was told by the dealership that to replace the battery would be $14,000. I haven't been able to find anyone in the area to work on the car. Does anyone know anyone in the area who could help me with this so I can return to my home in Texas?
Dealer told me I need to buy a high voltage inverter to get my car to start. They said they charged my battery and it wouldn’t turn over
I have 2005 escape Ford hybrid same thing
If the battery won't hold a charge its probably not any good
Can you recharge it while the battery is still in the car ?
The battery had to come out in order to open the lid. I was not able to get to two screws on the side. But if you can open the side screws then you can leave the pack in the car. If you then run a cable out from under the lid then you would be able to recharge the battery when you need. This would require a permanent connection somewhere at the relay. I have not done this since I am concerned of having a 350V plug sticking out of the battery.
@@teardropjourneys1485 thx
Yes, you can.. You can do this with the HVTB in place. Directions, including how to assemble the charger, are detailed in a thread at greenhybrid.com in a thread located in the Ford Cars: Ford Escape Hybrid subforum. entitled "HV Jump Start." There are also directions for permanently attaching a charging wiring harness to the HVTB so that charging set-up in the future would be a matter of 2-3 minutes.
@@teardropjourneys1485 If you cut down a torx bit, you can get those two screws...they are the tough ones.
Holy Cow bud?
This is like saying I make a great spaghetti
Then eat it.
But dont give the ingredients?
They really didn’t care to make that user friendly
Why not just push the button it has to pass the current to the back battery pack its by the door panel
Great idea. However, Ford redesigned the 2009 FEH and there is no more button to push.
There must be a better way to charge the Hybrid battery than to take the whole damn thing out.
This is a helpful video.
