I first heard this song "East Virginia" at the Asheville Mountain Dance and Folk Festival that was run by Bascom Lamar Lunsford. He brought done the authentic musicians from the hollers and the mountains. Most of them were old and had lived the life and loved to sing the old ballads. Nora is of a different era, and age, but has the same feeling with a fresh tint. Her agonizingly slow slow start pulls at the heart strings.
Dang, she can pick that banjo! What a prodigy, hopefully she keeps growing on this musical path. Much love from a bluegrass-loving Virginian in the Midwest!
Just crossed the Ohio river back from spending the day in the country in KY. I have Appalachian roots in my family. Have an Uncle from Jenkins, KY. She woukd be welcomed there/here. Folks from from Jenkins, Flemming Neon, Vicco, etc welcomed in Brooklyn, hmmmm....maybe..
I don’t understand what I just saw. Is she this talanted? What is that on her face? Knowledge? Experience (can’t be)? Arrogance? How does she understand these songs so well? Is she just mimicing older musicians? My envy reaches painful levels. I am upset.
Her singing style does mimic old Appalachian vocal traditions, specifically Eastern Kentucky. I think her pickin' is influenced by Old-Time banjo but with her own spin on it. All this talent at 13. Amazing.
West Virginian here. It's really funny to refer call the other ones "East Virginians" to their face, they get so triggered. I'm particularly nasty and sometimes ask them if they're from "Lower" or "Lesser" Virginia, haha. Nice banjo playing. Couldn't understand what she was singing very well though, lyrics in description would have been nice.
@@EspeciallyEl Howdy! And I'll happily trade an ocean view for being on the other side of the Blue Ridge and protected from the nuclear fallout if DC ever gets hit. :D :D :D
@@DeDraconis lived in what you call "East Virginia" all my life... except for 5 years of it, where i lived in the great state of West Virginia. Both are truly beautiful states. I appreciate you West Virginians and your culture.
The fun thing about Nora Brown is that as she ages and matures she'll add more fingers to her pickin' style and at some point, open her mouth and set her voice free! She has a lovely voice all bottled up inside her.
What's up with her clothes? Is this East Virginian satire? I mean not EVERYONE dressed like that, some people wore sandals. But everyone did play the banjo.
Are you seriously choosing to have categorize what speaks to humanity by the limitations of a human voice speaking? Please, there is something ancient about the gift of using our hands to speak with ancient tools that we have used to calm our souls, you don’t need to convince yourself that there is something more important to receive than the simplistic demonstration of the mystery’s of life encapsulated in this short Ted video that speaks to many. Speechless and covered in goosebumps.

Its funny you call her a prodigy. I have called her that for a year now, The Prodigy 😉😎👍
MOM I NEED A BANJO!!!
…
this is truly very beautiful
Delightful first piece. Perfectly paced to allow the tune to speak for itself!
Schlomo is smiling. Not only is Nora brilliantly talented, but quite articulate as well.
Wow I hope they keep enjoying making music because it's lovely
This is wonderful, what beautiful talent and presence she has.
Wow!! She is way too young to have that much soul...
Yes, she is.
This song really takes me to the place I belong
Beautiful! Very talented!
Cue the people angrily commenting and forgetting that the E in TED stands for "Entertainment"
Made me shiver
I actually live, and are from East Va.(757), and can confidently say, It’s pretty country outside the cities. Like two different worlds colliding l.
Why she have few likes ??? She is incredible !!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Amazing. Transfixing. Traditional and original all in one.
*THose 155 dislikes are from WEST Virginians*
Rice MenaRQ 😂 gotta excuse them. Their cusbands and sisterwives cloud their view.
Lol
Or from diehard Doc Boggs purists.
Massively inspiring! Loved this.
Hope she comes to the UK to perform of us over here. She really gets absorbed in those songs.
Oh my god.. wonderful
Old soul, beautiful
Aaaayup. She's good!
She's amazing...
Amazing!
Old soul. She's got the longing that's for sure
I never tire of this, snakeheads rule
Stunning!!!
What is old is new
Well for me anyway
Thanks Nora
I didn't know Ted could sing!
This is a great rendition of John Brown's Dream. Why is it a TED talk? I am confused.
Wow!, respect:-)
Proud to have American heritage
No frets on the 2nd banjo. Not easy to play unless you already play violin. Great set,Nora.

West Virginia, mountain mama. Take me home, country roads!
This girl is channeling Roscoe Holcomb.

East Virginia... as in the Eastern part of the state of Virginia
@@out43 Yes, I know. It's a joke between us that the West Virginians call everyone in regular Virginia "East Virginians."
DeDraconis you're just jealous we get both mountains and sea! Just kidding. 😂 Howdy from an East Virginian o'er yonder in Illinois! 👋

Reincarnation is real. Old soul man
So the Big Bang happens and spits out this mirac.... oops

Two finger pick and clawhammer.
I wasn’t all that impressed, but then the awesome claw hammer started 👌
The two-finger stuff knocks "clawhammer" out of the park in my opinion. Clawhammer is much easier.

Probably just what she has, is used to, or is most comfortable.
Can't understand 75% of what she was singing.
you don’t really need to
So where is the "idea worth spreading"?? Quo vadis, TED?
Technology, Entertainment and Design.
Okay, nice song, but this is TED and I expect TED talks, not TED musicians.
