Exploring South Africa | Cathkin Valley | Drakensberg Sun | Drakensberg | KZN

I recently took a trip with my family to the Drakensberg Sun Lifestyle Resort, situated in the Cathkin Valley, in the central region of the Drakensberg mountains, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. The area is named after one of the highest peaks, Cathkin Peak which has an elevation of 3,149 m (10,331 ft).
During our stay we went hiking in the mountains and forests, went on a canopy tour; zip lining through the tree tops, took plenty of photographs, flew the drone, and generally just spent time relaxing with the family. A cold front moved through the region towards the end of our stay, bringing very cold temperatures, and snow to the high lying peaks in the area.
The Drakensberg (Afrikaans for Dragon Mountains) are the largest mountain range in South Africa, and are so called because the early Dutch settlers thought that the mountains looked like a dragon's back. The Zulu people call the mountain range uKhahlamba, or the Barrier of Spears. The mountain range borders South Africa's mountain nation neighbour of Lesotho.
August is the tail-end of winter in South Africa, and the surrounding landscape was very dry and brown, but it brings with it its own special kind of natural beauty.
The region is abound with rolling foothills, soaring peaks, mountain lakes, streams, rivers, and forests. It is a hiker's paradise with plenty of activities for everyone including mountain biking and hiking trails, camping, luxury hotels, farm stalls selling arts and crafts and home-made confectionary, craft breweries, restaurants, and adventure centres offering horse riding, zip lining, white water tubing, quad biking and much, much more!
