For the past few weeks, I've been trying to get my 6WB digital cluster to work in my F30 340i. I have run into issue after issue and so far no luck. I wanted to give you guys a quick update and show you everything we've learned so far.
For those who are going from a 6WA to a 6WB, the process should be straightforward, basically plug-and-play. Since I was starting with the base cluster, my car was missing some of the wiring and the coding process is a little different.

On a larger scale, working on a car is like working on life; at some point a fella is going to come up against some big challenges in one’s lifetime, but if you lean on family and the right people who know other people, you can overcome some big challenges in life. Justin, you are not alone. I haven’t had any frustrating mods on my F30, but that’s mostly because I haven’t modded it that much. Just a bit of coding that worked out pretty well. I did install coilovers on my 2002 MkIV Jetta VR6 and that nearly killed me. I’d never done it before and it took me about 14-15 hours to get it all done in one day. I’m 54 and my knees still aren’t 100% from all the bending and squatting. We’re with you, brother. It’s going to feel really good when you get it sorted!

  • @Lup3r
    @Lup3r Рік тому +4

My most frustrating retrofit on my E90 was the Combox (Bluetooth Audio) Retrofit on my retrofitted CIC ('07 335i).
I went through so many posts about the retrofit that I seriously considered selling BMW retrofit kits. There are a lot of different iDrive features you can enable on CIC. The Combox was an optional radio upgrade package for (most) BMWs from some time in 2009, until it became part of the CIC "next big thing" (CIC-NBT) head unit in around 2014. The E90 BN2000 Combox replaced the TCU and/or MULF2 configuration of the E90 CIC system. If you had both of those modules, you would have an extra fiber optic connection, and you needed to loop that terminal (so the light can complete its circuit).
Problem was, I was very new to understanding electronics and I guess I came across a lot more posts that emphasized looping the dangling fiber optic cable. I didn't know what every single one of them did, I just knew plug this in that, press keyboard, run software, done. So the whole time I'm running the combox with no fiber optic cable plugged in, it's just looped out, I can see the module in the computer software, and it looks like its writing the VIN, but it's not playing any sound through bluetooth. Now originally I did have the wrong Combox, so this on top of my lack of knowledge, was not making me lose confidence that I had done it right. I went back through every step. Perhaps my copy of BMW's software isn't installed correctly, or I did the install wrong, or maybe my car is too old and can't read it properly. I opted for an eBay harness too and figured maybe that was bad too.
Well one day of poking it, literally close to a year after I started the retrofit, and many days spent banging my head thinking I'm following every step that everyone has recommended, and I decided what's the worst that can happen. The plug fits, after all. I mean why wouldn't it need a cable that fits? Then, when I put the key in and pressed the start button.... like gold, but in form of bluetooth audio, flowing from my upper middle class 2007 german luxury premium surround sound system. 192kbps mp3 audio streaming never sounded so great! At this point, I have done probably every single troubleshooting measure on the radio system short of a full out firmware update with an ICOM. I know your troubles.

Great work as always. I love the fact that you celebrate your accomplishments as well as your failures, most people would have posted the completed project, pretending never having failed. My failure story and funny at the same time is; I drive an E90, while cleaning the Vanos Solenoid, when clipping it back in, the metal clip went flying. Spent about 2 hours looking for it. Had enough and I took a piece of metal wire and tied the clip in place. 2 months after, I dropped something while in the garage and it fell next to damn metal clip (Found it!). I was so mad but happy at the same time.

Did this mod on my F20 1 series. Bit different but went from basic to the 6WA extended that requires the fiber optic cable. The trick is that why you need the 3 way split cable is that the fiber optic loop must be kept, unlike the CanBus that can be taped into, the loop must be continuous if you have a HK amp. If no HK amp then you could have fed it directly.

THIS IS ALL YOU NEED. The Cluster is a major MOSTBUS contributer... atleast in most bmw models. The fiber optic cable or MOSTBUS System shares data at light speed to major modules in the car like your AMP, Cluster, Radio, Gateway modules, and others. You were having problems before because, you were breaking the MOSTBUS RING, if you break the ring it takes down whatever modules are after that one that is broken. For the MOSTBUS to work effectively all modules in the ring must remain on and active for all communication to be received. This information can be your back up sensors to rpm readings, or even audio for you speakers all running through those two lanes at the speed of light with 1s and 0s.

Hi Justin. First things first I would HIGHLY recommend you download a copy of ISTA it’s a few hundred gigabytes in size but it contains wiring diagrams, schematics and lots of other very useful resources for any recent bmw. You should be able to find a copy floating around the internet in form of a torrent download. Only thing I would recommend is get a copy from a couple years ago as the newer ones insist on having a “key”. It’s really a must have for bmw retrofits.
Back on topic. The fiber bus/network, commonly referred to as fiber loop or MOST loop. Is just as the name implies. It’s a loop! Hence why the fiber cable is actually 2 cables. (Hope that makes sense). Your car already has the fiber network so you do indeed need a 3 way fiber cable. Your KOMBI (cluster) will now be part of the loop.
Only other thing I would saw is make sure your cluster is from a reputable trust worthy source and has been virginised correctly! If not this can course all kinds of havoc. Assuming all is well it should be a simple coding job in esys. Best of luck!!

Hey Justin, huge fan, the green cable is likely going to your TCU and other modules that are in the MOST loop. You need that three-way MOST cable that will add the KOMBI cluster to the existing loop and then to the head unit. The head unit is the source of the MOST bus and needs to read all modules in the loop and identifies them based on the order it first appears. Think of it like a race car track and every car is identified and numbered, if something is out of order the entire loop breaks. See MOST bus wiring diagrams in ISTA or newTIS, that confirms this. Good luck!

So I decided to upgrade from NBT to NBT EVO a few months ago. I looked for an accident damaged BMW with an NBT EVO HU and found a G30 5 Series.
I installed and coded the unit to my car only to find that it lacked the fibre optic connection that F-Series BMWs have. So the unit works BUT it doesn’t get warning chimes from the 6WA cluster, no fuel consumption info and no clock.
After some research, I discovered that G-Series BMWs use Ethernet to communicate NBT EVO, Cluster and other modules.
Sourced another Unit from an F-Series aaand, it’s broken. Won’t start, can’t be coded etc.
This haa been the worst 😢😅

Mine was installing paddle shifters into my previous car (bmw 120d M sport) . After looking to see it was pre wired from factory (which it was) it was a case of getting the look for inside the steering wheel and getting paddles etc and having it coded .
I did all that and it kinda worked . My issue was that my upshift paddle was downshifting and my downshift paddle did nothing .
After hard searching I came to the conclusion it might be the circuit boards in the paddles . So I took the board out of the upshift paddle and put it in my downshift paddle . Then bought a brand new upshift paddle off eBay . Put it all together and it worked 🤙🏼 . Issue was the resistance on the circuit boards wasnt right .

That 3 way harness should definitely work because the fiber optic system works in a circle. Meaning if you visualize how all the components are connected in the system, they create a circle or loop. If you break the circle in any way, the components in the system would no longer work. So when you directly plugged the cluster into the headunit while removing the existing cable, you removed the headunit and cluster out of the loop which is why no data could be passed. With the 3 way harness, the headunit is still able to complete the original fiber optic “circle” with the cluster intercepting in the middle

Hello Justin, I am a fan of yours and I live in Germany and am doing an apprenticeship in a BMW dealership, unfortunately I do not understand that much English, but on the subject of your instrument cluster, it may be because the iDrive version is too old? Because if you previously had the one with only 1 display in your 3 Series and now you want the other, it might be because of the old iDrive version. Maybe you need iDrive 6 you can update it via USB but I can't say if it works the same way in the USA! Otherwise you could maybe try coding with Bimmer Code but I think you've already tried that. The new instrument cluster includes this live consumption display.

First i was sent the wrong part and then whoever had the previous car did not have the original bolts so had to track down the correct part number. overall just a hassle i miss that car tho

Have you tried using E-sys? In it you can change the VO & FA to add 6WB, it will then calc and add all the settings to all the modules across the entire car which is necessary for 6WB to work. It will code all the modules in the car for you properly. Checkout BimmerDoc’s channel for excellent e-sys content, if you ask him he might even be able to give some tips? Highly recommend his channel for explanation how to use the BMW tools to code the car properly.

I’ll have to check it out. I changed the VO to include the 6WB plus updated the two other modules that it recommended. I have a feeling it’s not going to work until I get that three way fiber optic cable though.

Primary reason as to why my install took forever, terrible fitment and the clamp the sent me broke. How does the new clamp break but my rusted oem one is fine? But anyways if you can find someone to install your dp I’d recommend that instead of diy.

You just have to take off the old dash, and put the new one, 10minute installation, doesnt need to take off console. Cruise control works, although if you car have HUD, its incompatible with the hud function. If you dont have it like me, then no worries.

On my E90, i don't think there was anything that was a headache to repair, everything was quite straightforward, even taking the dashboard completely out the car to repair the heater core, all the way to rebuilding the complete motor... However on this customers F30 320i, I'm more confused and ready to throw in the towel, after replacing the pedal, valvetronic motor, retiming the motor as well as recoding the keyset (even trying out new keysets) this car still does not want to accelerate, took a working pedal from my car and tried it, no joy, checked every possible physical wire & fuse, no breaks or loose connections, so yeah, i have no idea where to turn, at this point, I'd ask the customer to pay for the labour and components used and stick a fork in it, I'm done😷

Most frustrating diy on my f30? Trying to get the audio working on my s688a harmon kardon system. FYI, still doesn't work. Bought the car cheap and fixed it up. And one of the issues was the no audio. Found the amplifier was soaked from the previous owner and bought a replacement off ebay. Coded and flashed everything but still no audio. Finally after a year and tons of hours looking elsewhere, since I had a "good" working condition amplifier. I decided to open the replacement amplifier up(fighting passed the temper proof wax put on by the seller). Once opened, I started looking at the board. Comparing it to my old one and noticed atleast 6 missing chips 👍🏿. I went on ebay right away to contact the seller and they responded with... you're just now installing the amplifier after a year??? I tried replying back but was instantly blocked by the seller... so not only am I out 400 dollars and 100+ hour's of research / pulling things apart trying to diagnose other possibilities. I'm stuck buying ANOTHER amplifier 😬
Moral of the story. I've learned alot about my car over the year and not to look for the cheapest replacement to try and fix an issue on a bmw.
I may be purchasing the bavsound revenant MOST fiber optic amplifier this spring if it goes on sale

I get stuck with a 335i with the N55 and no LED highlights, because I didn't know about the switch to the B58. Why would BMW change the whole engine after a minor LCI update?
