Impossible for her to take the kid from the hospital. Nurse has to deactivate the ankle bracelet on the kid, the bracelet on the mom before removing either. Kid can't leave the floor without that.

Maybe it is in a low tech country especially in a rural area?
That MIL had some serious audacity to attempt to kidnap the baby. If that ever happened to me, I'd forbid her to see the baby again to avoid a repeat offense, on top of calling the cops on her for attempted kidnapping.

When my Girlfriends (Granddaughter & Husband) and (Grandson & Wife) had Children you had to check in at the Front Desk and were not allowed in unless you were on a Visitor List. You couldn't go into the area where the rooms were until they called the room asking if it is alright to go Visit.
I was the second to get pregnant after one of my older sisters. I was the youngest girl in a family of ten. I had three sisters, all older, one didn’t have her first child until six years after my last was born. My mother never pressured any of us about having children. My husband and I waited four years after marriage.
There's a lot of people who can't forgive, sitting in hell begging to be forgiven.

Hey you think she's not mom material and yet you told her to jump up and down while heavily pregnant. How did MIL think she was going to get away with kidnapping?
These fake stories irritate me in the fact that the gaslighting isn't shut down right away. If anything, simply stop interacting. Or block. It's not rocket science. Blocking is the easiest thing to do, but not the best. Every few years or so I just change my number. Best way to cut out the past.
