The band had to stay alive! We've all heard the stories of artists, so-called " selling out" to stay alive scenarios....they did it in a very small way. they pretty much stayed true to their vision. IMHO. I wouldn't really know I'm not privy to the real poop. But I was never disappointed.nice melody? They've done that quite a few times....they still didn't get much notoriety except among other musicians.
Most of the critics say that ''The Missing Piece'' is one of their worst albums. It's actually one of my favorites. It's the best of what ''pop music'' has to offer. The guitar parts are mindblowing throughout the whole album.
These guys provided a template for so many of us back in the seventies. No one thought they could approach their music with any degree of confidence but their accurate way of playing and their originality inspired so many of we musicians back then (and today). The greatest band in the history of rock in my opinion.
DEEPLY LOVED !! GG gives up !! turning around - -no one realizewd their genius except you and me - that is why we are here , .. 42 years later -- they are DEEPLY LOVED !!!! (professors of music in universities still agonize over their pure genius !!)
this band was always good, but weren't trying to be commercial until that last few albums.. some people like the last few albums more, but a diehard GG fan likes all of it, with the last few albums not quite cherised like most of the earlier ones. My favorite albums were the first 4 studio albums with Phil still in the band with his younger brothers, Derek and Ray.. RIP Ray.. great musicians, the lot of them.
Até hoje me questiono!
In one way, it is amazing that they were able to eeek out a living for 10 yrs. playing this amazing music. By the time of the end of their career, gigs weren't paying even the meager wages they were used to......and punk was making some rich. They tried but GG could only exist as themselves......one of the true injustices of life was when the members had to seek other ways of survival.
Sure Gentle Giant fans felt pretty alienated when they ventured in uncharted territory by going pop but even for a band was known for being adventurous they can still sound damn good!
It kills me to this day that they broke up in 1980, and that was it. Waiting for a reunion...32 years and counting. And don't tell me about "Three Friends". That ain't it.
Yeah it would be damm great if they did but unfortunately its not looking to promising.I heard ray shulman and kerry minnear have gotten together to compose some music so its not totally out of the question but heck i will settle for a studio album at this point.I agree 110% with your comment about their music and the feelings it gives oneself.Simply put they are the greatest most underated band ever
Sad that when Giant finally compromised/simplified their lofty artistic standards they still didn't gain mainstream popularity. Somehow what worked for Genesis didn't for Giant. Maybe it's best. (That's easy for me to say!)
@paganklh1 Just because it ain't blonde, ain't dressed like a whore, and ain't backed up with huge volumes of reverb don't mean its awful. Gary Green sure plays the guitar nice in this song. And, of course, Gentle Giant had one of the very best keyboardists. Granted, they didn't run off into any of those wonderful riffs like they once did, but this was the age of punk. I was too young to be a hippy and too old to be a punker. I was a Brady Buncher born on the exact day as Jan Brady.
@progrocker69 I'd like to hear more of your political involvements, if you care to elaborate. I'd also like to hear more about molecular gifts. I've been to the centre of the earth and back and still haven't heard of your Navratalova persuasion, I'd love you to open your diary and pencil me in for this flame-grilled revelation.
@paganklh1 That's okay. There are many of us who know how to play something other than our wee wees. Indeed, some like to play checkers while only a few of us know how to play chess. Some like background music to go along with their shallow marshmallow lives while others of us desire something deeper. Bye. I'm certainly going to miss throwing things at you.
@paganklh1 they try to be commercial, but you have no clue that they atr concidered one of the most underrated bands ever look at this before you have an opinion. watch?v=7mPGBzytpmA&lc=XTm0Weske5l3kUbfAMtX0PHuhT70DnLgZ8JnqhbQwxs&feature=inbox
@irena7777777 Well, it is a known fact that my comments are what plants crave, have extra molecules, and go great with some Extra Big-Ass Fries! Anything I can do to be of service, ya know. But it's really a shame that you don't know as much about me as you think you do, seeing as how I'm very politically involved in progressive causes and the like when I'm not messing around in silly online flame wars. And for the last freaking time, I never cared one way or the other about thumbs up.
I feel like I’m a worse person for watching this. I’m sorry, but why did the band hire the singer? Did he buy all of their equipment? Judging by his demeanor, he thinks he’s actually good.
Even the pop songs made by Gentle Giant are good.
"Missing Piece" is not a "pop" album.
this band sounds ridiculously good live
Most of the critics say that ''The Missing Piece'' is one of their worst albums. It's actually one of my favorites. It's the best of what ''pop music'' has to offer. The guitar parts are mindblowing throughout the whole album.
Totally agree. My favourite GG album also.
They were outstanding! I am delighted to record that I saw them perform live three times in the 70’s.
I saw them 5 times! After all this time they still sound as great as ever to me!
These guys provided a template for so many of us back in the seventies. No one thought they could approach their music with any degree of confidence but their accurate way of playing and their originality inspired so many of we musicians back then (and today). The greatest band in the history of rock in my opinion.
I used to say to myself that they are the greatest band in popular music ever existed
The balance between the instruments. Whoever mixed it : kudos.
Damn, would it not be great if GG could get back together for one last tour. Their music still lifts me higher than any other band even today.
DEEPLY LOVED !! GG gives up !! turning around - -no one realizewd their genius except you and me - that is why we are here , .. 42 years later -- they are DEEPLY LOVED !!!!
(professors of music in universities still agonize over their pure genius !!)
That off beat during the chorus. Even with a straight up pop tune, they give it a little "prog" twist. Lovely!
this band was always good, but weren't trying to be commercial until that last few albums.. some people like the last few albums more, but a diehard GG fan likes all of it, with the last few albums not quite cherised like most of the earlier ones. One of the best bands EVER.
these multi instrumentalists play circles around most bands then and now.
***** one of best progrock band with one of best rock Ballade ever
I bought this album my freshman year at the University Of Cincinnati. Still have it.
Spotted a couple of my geography teachers playing in the band, but what a great song.
I first heard them in the late 70s never seen them live this concert is Amazing they we're so underrated ...
World Class musicians
The chorus is just so wonderful in this song. Really sucks me in.
SUPER VOICE AND SOUND
THAT S GENTLE GAINT
A SUPER BEST EVER GROUP EVER AND EVER
Gary Green's guitar is superb
A Masterpiece
Até hoje me questiono!
Love that short lead on the B3 by Kerry
Gentle giant was rock prog at it's PEAK!
Some of the Best Concerts I've seen, were by GG.. Whenever they played in the North East, you can bet, we were there
In one way, it is amazing that they were able to eeek out a living for 10 yrs. playing this amazing music. By the time of the end of their career, gigs weren't paying even the meager wages they were used to......and punk was making some rich. Real genius is seldom rewarded in the here and now.
I love this music ... Thanks for posting.
Great song Great Band!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great song
Superb!!!
Aahh, at last on UA-cam! Thanks for posting!
Sounds like Genesis, Duke album, probably on Heathaze
Sure Gentle Giant fans felt pretty alienated when they ventured in uncharted territory by going pop but even for a band was known for being adventurous they can still sound damn good!
super sound and words

É lindo demais!
😢
Nunca foram uma banda midiática!
Mas deixaram a sua marca na história! Talento tinham de sobra!
Eterno Gentle Giant!
I saw GG in concert in '73 and in '78. This band was such a huge influence on me. So original.
They came they shone they went shame still shine forever tho
Amazingly beautiful! Thanks!
It kills me to this day that they broke up in 1980, and that was it. Waiting for a reunion...32 years and counting. And don't tell me about "Three Friends". That ain't it.
Yes
Good Humans playing Not machines imitating Music
Great song. It's another Gentle Giant, but not bad.
Dig it!

With all the hype surrounding Genesis, why won’t Gentle Giant consider a final reunion? (just for the fans) 🧐
Sad that when Giant finally compromised/simplified their lofty artistic standards they still didn't gain mainstream popularity. Somehow what worked for Genesis didn't for Giant. Maybe it's best. (That's easy for me to say!)
"Missing Piece" is not a compromise, a pop album, or a sell-out.
@jhowerton123 Ha! So did I except at the University Of Cincinnati!
Two people need to hurry up and turn around.
FUCKING SICK BLUD

What a silly, ignorant remark
You madam are deaf.
