I find it heart-warming how some kids and teenagers are so committed to their pets. It makes me feel these next generations are already more responsible and knowledgeable than many of us were.
Yes! I've argues with so many grown adults because they've "had 40 years of experience" with a bird in a tiny, round cage with an all seed diet never let out etc. And it makes me dad how many adults think they are entitled to argue with years of research AND experience just because they've had a bird :(
That perfectly describes my aunt and uncle. They haven’t the slightest clue how to properly care for a bird but think that they know it all and don’t listen to anybody elses advice. Their African Gray randomly started overpeening and I suggested that they take him to the vet. When they said no I begged them, and said that I would schedule the appointment, and pay for his visit. They stopped talking to me altogether after that.
@@alec2991 I hear you, but don't be discouraged! Some people wear their knowledge as part of their personality, so when you criticize the information, they feel personally attacked. I miss training with my budgie so much! The chirping is such a happy sound. It actually brought a tear to my eyes, just to hear this sweet budgie. Good luck with your training and remember to keep having fun with her.
@@factsaboutislam3304 yes, my sweet guy died. I was away from home and he died when I was gone. I'll never know how he died. If it was a long term issue or an accident. I can’t get over how tiny a budgie looks in Dave’s hand. I get so used to relative sizes, and the bigger birds, and I forget just HOW little a budgie is.
I feel better about my three noise machines now. They don't care to obey me either. Only had them two months now and finally getting a good response towards my hand. I still can't touch them yet but they don't fly out of the cage in terror anymore when I put my hand in. I am thinking I should be able to hand train soon.
I'm at the very same point with my Budgie (rescued 2 months ago). He's still scared but we're working on it. He's very flighty and doesn't return very well at all. He's very sweet and I know we'll get there once he adjusts to an entirely new life with me. I have no idea how old he is or what his background is. He knows a few tricks already (from his previous life). I can't wait to see what else he knows how to do! He still won't play with any toys yet or eat "anything" healthy, which I offer daily. I've tried to find his owner(s) but no one has been looking for him, which is sad. I've finally declared that he's officially mine, after 8 week of looking for his family. He's no longer a "foster" bird! I call him Houdini because he's quite an escape artist, sigh. Good luck with your baby!!
I know you probably won't see this but this just happened I commented a while back about having been given a cockatiel a while back and I had no real experience with a bird bigger than a budgie and after having had those bite me as a kid and teen several times I had somewhat lost trust I'm parrots and was honestly at a loss for what to do so I scheduled a vet appointment to check her up and got to work on doing research on how to make her life the best it can be, I followed pretty much to a T all the advice you have on your channel, immediately set out to work on a diet change cause she was around 6 months and only eating seeds, got a chopstick and a clicker and for just over a month now got to work. Yuki was not hand fed as a baby and had no previous real human interactions so I've spent this first month making sure I never overstepped her boundaries and that all our interactions were mainly positive, began educating my parents too on how to interact with her so she bonded positively with more people and educated myself on how to help her safely fly around in bird proof areas of my house (she's fully flighted and I intend on keeping her that way) and helped her get confidence to step out of her cage on her own and explore (she does this on her own now and even asks me to let her out at times) today for the first time ever she was playing with my glasses and afterwards bowed her head and let me rub her little head, it was such an emotional experience cause just 3 months ago I lost my beloved guinea pig to cancer and had been struggling on how to process this loss but working with her not only brought me healing but a new friend now hopefully for the next decades of my life and it's honestly all thanks to your wonderful advice on this channel giving me hope that if I stuck with I'd see results and I honestly did. Not sure if you take video requests but I'd love to hear more about how i can increase motivation. My little budgie is making great progress but she isn't always interested in working for her treat.
I'm looking forward to training my new budgie once she actually steps up. She's stubborn and will literally lay her body horizontally across my offered finger, whole body weight, to get to her millet instead of just stepping.lol.
I'd start with them on a flat surface and clicking for stepping up onto the back of your hand, reset them off with a lure, then keep slowly turning your hand until your finger is on the top for a step up. Also, make sure your finger is not level with the stand but about 1/2 an inch above the stand touching their chest
I have three budgies that I got from my father in law, all fully flighted but not tame. I can get the female to eat off my hand and the blue male to land near me but target training is only going good with the female lol no one else wants to come near the stick tho. And the green male is a stubborn little thing lol he doesn't want to get along with anyone
I have found that some birds like praise more than a seed or other food for their treat. My budgie loves her millet and responded very well to it. When I got my Pineapple Conure, he didn't or any other food. He isn't food motivated. He is praise and love motivated. It took me a minute to figure it out. I did the finding favorites treat thing as Dave and Jamie tell you to do and while I found his fav that still wasn't what he wanted. And, I say he because I've never had him tested but, he seems more like a male. My budgie is an obvious female. Her Cere settled right at a year and she went through her first hormonal stage it got all crusty and dark. Lol. Too bad conures aren't sexually dimorphic.
Could you make more videos for cockatiels? I have two ,a male & female. They are not bonded. The female is afraid of my hand. She was an untamed, rescue. I have CFS & sleep a lot plus I also have a tremor which frightens her. I just want her to step up . She likes being on me. At present I have no choice but to grab her. Neither of us like that.😢
I’m trying to train my budgie to fly to my hand. I can get mine to step on to my hand and eat the millet just fine! How ever, when I pull it away to get her to jump, she doesn’t do it 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢. I’ve had her since mid December. Any suggestions
I trained one of my budgies to fly to me... but then he figured out he'd get a treat for flying to me so he'd fly to me, get his treat, immediately fly away and then back and expect another treat (and away and back, away and back, away and back if I didn't give him a treat because he came when I didn't cue him).
I have two budgies that are fully flighted but I'm having some trouble with training them because we got them both at the same time and they kind of distract each other and they fly around the room, they are very good about getting picked up and target training in their cage, but once they fly around the room it's like they don't remember anything I've taught them. Most of the time when they fly around they will step up to go back to their cage but I just don't know how to progress their training. Is there anything you think I should try doing?
Oh! I remember her training with her budgie! It helped me so much on recall training with my R2-D2! Love these budgie sessions! And I use advice from big parrot training sessions as well! 🪶🥰🪶
I need help, I just got a bird a few weeks ago and she absolutely hates me, I’m a first time bird owner and every exercise I try to earn trust doesn’t work. Is there any tips someone has and a step by step walk through on how to train one to fly to me or just how to train one

I'm trying to train to come to my hand But it doesn't sometime it comes if I show him the Seeds But if hes in a different room where the cage is not put And he immediately comes to my hand Especially on my shoulder And if I call him he comes to my hand but he doesn't come to my hand where the room with the cage in the living room. were the cages is I think probably he thinks this is the safe area But he does fly around all over the The kitchen the bedroom the bathroom the living room And he does spend time in those rooms as well But the only time when I call him he comes to my hand it's when hes not in the living room.
