  • This video shows how candy boards are made at Wardens Farm. Candy boards are placed on all hives over the winter to help the bees with food so the hive will not starve. Hives with many bees also will get a quilt box added later as well. All hives will get added two to 1 sugar water as well.

      You can purchase them but it is easier to make and you can add what you think your bees need as far as pollen substitute and bee health items with the mix! Happy bee keeping!

      I made these in a 7-inch pie tin (5 C sugar and 1/4 C Bee Pro / 2) the bees consumed them in 2-3 weeks. After 24 hours, dumped them out on wax paper to dry and harden, very easy to make for little money.

    Are you sure that you want to use pollen before the winter solstice?

    • @WardensFarmNC
      @WardensFarmNC  Місяць тому +1

      in our area, when the summer flowers stop producing pollen, you got to give the bees help. it has worked for me. I make the boards have them ready and put them on around December 22nd winter solace

    Should I add a little bit of propolis in the candy board

    • @WardensFarmNC
      @WardensFarmNC  2 роки тому +2

      Hey John, you could add it and the bees will use it as needed. I would save it for personnel use if you have a lot of it. It can help fight against bacteria, and also has anti-inflammatory effects and help skin heal. you can also melt it down with used comb when making wax. I have a video on a solar wax melter I built to melt the wax out of the bee comb.

    Hi. Neat Candy Board Make VT. Just Subbed. 😎
    Here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 it was kind of Spring. Nearly 12C (53F) recently. 🙃
    Now today its just below Freezing and its just started Snowing ! YIKES.... Oh well. Luckily my Bees had the Honey left on them. And added feed Sugar Bricks, so all should be Sweet. Take left Honey off in April or so. [Warre Supers in its Base Box !]
    Saw you had a visting x1 Bee doing a personal Quality Control at 9.27 Timeline. 😉
    Will take your Board Idea for next Winter for a UK National (Square shape) and a French Warre Hive a 12" Box Stack replicating a Tree cavity (Smaller Hive and easier to lift Box by Box !) Know as the 'Peoples Hive' DIY :make it yourself from Dumpster Scrap Lumber. 👍)
    Question :
    Is their a Candy Board for a Horizontal Hive*??? Would it have to be a Vertical Board with Mesh on both side (?), If you see what I mean. Candy encased within. 🤔
    H.H Uses x25 Jumbo Deep Langstroth Frames * has a gap of around x1 Inch, above them, then a fine Mesh Inner Sheet (view bees without a Suit... 👍then 1/2 Inch Timber Boards. Above is an inner Cavity Space. And a Sloping Roof (Ex Freezer Lid / Timber 'Metal Sheet' Roof. Has a inner Rapid Rounder Feeder (feed hole) for 1:1 Syrup etc. ✔️Maybe a Candy Board could goe over that Feeder Hole...
    But, could x3 Inches up be to far for Bees to Crawl up to (?)
    Any ideas out their from fellow H.H users !?! 😎
    🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
    Happy Beekeeping 2023
    🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
    H.H : Started out as an Ex Log Box. Has an Inner Cavity with x25 Frames Brood/ Honey. 👍
    Using Sheep's Wool for Wall Insulation (wall Cavity) these Bees usually make it OK.
    Alas this H.H became a deadout this time, (having survived the last Winters of 20-21, 21-22.😕
    Think it's a New Queen Split once Spring really comes (!) 🤞

      You can adjust the candy board to any dimension that you could use in your hives. I made it for Langstroth 10 frame beehive. It's 2 in thick and I make the candy 1 in thick. Usually last through the cold winter but we've had warm winters and I've been going through two to three of them per hive. My bees are calm but I always wear a suit because I have friends who've been stung in the eyelids. Usually wear gloves all the time too. Every now and then I go without gloves. You have some good ideas there. Definitely some happy beekeeping on your end.

      Thanks for answering.👍 Appreciated, still need to work out a Vertical Version (down between Jumbo Deep Langstroth Frames) in my Horizontal Hive !
      Have a Bee Season to work it out. Another Hive(s) Split due, so H.H. will have a season to grow up to a new Colony first. 🙃

    Why are the corner holes needed? Thank you

    • @WardensFarmNC
      @WardensFarmNC  7 місяців тому

      The corner holes help the bees get up onto the sugar board depended upon where they are clustered the corners can help them get up on top and if they're on top it helps them get back down to the cluster.

    Why add vinegar

    • @WardensFarmNC
      @WardensFarmNC  2 місяці тому

      You add the vinegar to prevent the board from spoiling if the weather gets warm and it helps fight off any kind of mold.

    How often do you replace the candy board on a single hive during the winter. I am in Clemson, SC and our winters are not that bad nor that long. (2) Where do you buy the screened board? (3) Do you put a telescoping lid above the candy board?

    • @WardensFarmNC
      @WardensFarmNC  10 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the questions, 1) I only replace them when they get used up. My candy boards are usually two inches thick (I make the frame 2.5 in deep) so they last pretty good. 2) I make my own candy board holders which is really easy to build. The screened material 1/2 in wire mesh you can buy at any hardware store. 3) I use quilt boxes with cedar shavings that go on top of the candy board to help draw out moisture and put the inner cover then the outer cover. The candy boards help pull moisture out as well. Hope this helps. I
      I plan to do a video of building the frame in the next month.

    can the candy board be too dry?

    • @WardensFarmNC
      @WardensFarmNC  7 місяців тому +1

      Once they dry you want them to stay dry until you place them on the hives. The bees will perspire in cold weather creating moisture when it hits the cold covers. The candy helps absorb that moisture so that's why you want it dry.

    • @margaretdecker2776
      @margaretdecker2776 7 місяців тому

      So, as long as it sticks together, it will be ok. Dry better then too moist.
