When I have kids Im gonna have buildzoid videos playing on repeat when theyre sleeping so they grow up to be super geniuses, kinda like the way people used to do with mozart

I found it weird when you can sleep with people talking / noise from youtube or from a video but not just music, well i guess that is the purpose of asmr genre .. idk .. kind of weird human habit i guess

That's a weird heatsink. We need more weirdness outside of oooh it's waifu and white.
Anything with the hidden connector's or connectors on the case front side are cool.

    G'day Buildzoid,
Yeah I also find when Engineers do Quirky Stuff like this interesting too, Sapphire's R9 Vapor-X V6 (2x3) & V10 (2x5) Engine VRMs also spring to mind.
I would find a "Did it work?" Thermal Comparison video interesting too.

the 290X doesn't really have a normal layout VRM for comparison but the 290 Vx is basically the same VRM as the later 290 Tri-X and 390 Nitro. I might test that. Though the main thing I want to try with a 290 Vx is swapping the 3553 to 3550s.

The brown PCB reminds me of the AsRock Z77 EXtreme4 which "funnelE" enough has one of the most unique VRM designs I've ever seen. Its half analog, half digital. Mine still running strong with a 5GHz 3770K delid. The AsRock Z77 EXtreme4 would make a cool VRM review vid.

you must have gotten a helluva good chip. I had a 3770k that could do 4.8GHz at 1.34v. Sucks that the motherboard shorted and it took out my 3770k

I don't really see anything that special about the ISL6367 that's used on that board.

the GTX 670 Phantom is actually a normal fan layout with a layer of extra fins not connected to anything slapped ontop.

Seeing an IHS on a GPU die always bugs me. Were those workers in GPU factories that clumsy back in the days?

This shroud design would be decent if the fans were on top of the heatsink like they are in most cards since then the hot air would have more exit paths out of the heatsink (of course you would also need proper case airflow to ensure that the hot air exiting out the sides gets pushed out of the case instead of being recirculated). Unfortunately most cards have decorative shrouds that block the heatsink instead so "de-shrouding" a graphics card tends to improve thermal performance even without switching to case fans (though I imagine on some cards you can't even mount the stock fans properly without the shroud).

I always loved the look of that heat sink back in the GTX 6XX/7XX days, id love to know what you think of the cooler after testing. I think one of the advertising points was easy to clean, just brush the top or something.

Hey BZ, I would like to see you put the card back together and testing it. For as difficult as it was for you to dissassemble the card, it might be a nightmare putting it back together again! But it was all well worth your time and effort just to be able to see the layout of all of it's components. Keep uploading more YT content so we can be in awe of how cards are able to function.🎉😮😊

Asus tuf-rx7800xt-o16g-og-gaming (2.9 slot design, 1.2cm less width, middle fan 13 blades, 4 SMD can capacitors on ALL PCB, smaller vent hole, radiator with more heat pipes) VS
Asus tuf-rx7800xt-o16g-gaming (2.96 slot, middle fan 11 blades, 25 SMD can capacitors total)?
Which one is better and why...and more importantly, which seems less likely to have coil whine (and less noise in general)? In a no overclock and undervolt most likely forever scenario.
Do the black rectangle capacitors have more chance to cause coil whine (even if they are better)?

Fans are slightly better at pulling through rather than pushing air into fins/rads. EKWB has a page showing testing showing about a one degree difference.

I must say these cooler designs are some of my favorites. Not for functionality, but in terms of looks, man these are sexy. I wonder how much modern techniques like ducting and a flow-through designs would make that idea work.

They switched to quickreleasable fans on 7xx series so you didn't have to disassemble the heatsink to clean the fans.

To my knowledge (cars) radiators mostly benefit from a single fan behind them, because vacuum makes the corners and center have the same airflow as the fan blade area.
All this works with a shroud tho ...cars overheating oftentimes caused by people removing the shroud (for easier access and maintenance of the engine) 😂

I remember always seeing these cards on eBay back in the day and they seemed interesting, but I had no idea that their VRM would be so unusual. I imagine that VRM could be run without a heatsink.

I think it was a Thermalright CPU tower cooler I had with like 5cm long screws with very heavy springs that took so much force to make the second screw catch a thread it felt that either the first one will rip a hole through the board or your screwdriver will slip and stab the board. This leaf spring mount looks very tame in comparison.

a bit of gpu necromancy question
do you have any idea why nobody ever made 4gb r7 260x?
you did mention this gpu is wierd because of memory density and i was wondering about myidea about increasing memory density on 260x
because why not make such gpu if a workstation versions of the same core did just that with w5100 and w4300
would it be too close to rx460 ?
i kind of want to make one

Ohhh....the crappy inferior architecture THERMI....one of Nvidias finest moments when they actually thought of the consumers breakfasts (very good for cooking eggs and ham) and consumers winter heating :). This is the essence of Nvidia and their inferiority :).
