I don't blame creators for taking on sponsorships that only later turn out to be sketchy but in the case of betterhelp the controversy is pretty easy to find. It honestly surprised me to suddenly see them doing sponsorships again. Especially, because both channels I saw them on were pretty reputable as responsible and 'safe'.
Established titles was “exposed” a few years ago. All it took was a little research and many creators would of known. And now it’s happening all over again with better help. It sucks to think that most creators don’t even consider researching when it comes to lining their pockets.

@@Kkmzji I'd push back slightly on the idea creators are just doing this to line their pockets. I'm sure some are, but we are in the middle of an economic crisis where everybody not well off to rich is fighting among the wolves. If a creator hocked a sham product to audiences, that's obviously bad, but I wonder how annoyed I'm allowed to be if I knew that sponsor was their rent that month or food on the table.

I was surprised/disappointed when the creators that I watch started doing better help sponsorships. It's like everybody forgot about a few years ago when they were exposed for being terrible. And now I'm seeing the same videos by people talking about how shitty, abusive, and unqualified their therapists on better help were. It's like deja vu
It's so crazy remembering it being exposed by PewDiePie, then everyone else apologising for advertising it without researching what it actually was... And now it's back everywhere.
yeah i had it for a few months but recently stopped paying for it because my therapists never showed up. And they'd go on vacation for weeks/months randomly without letting me know, so I wouldn't get my money back since I had already paid. It was terrible
They also treat their therapists terribly/don't pay them fairly, to the point that many quit. Plus things like not allowing therapists to tell their clients when they were quitting better help, so in some cases people would be ghosted by their therapists and *it wasn't even the fault of the therapist* (if it weren't for their exploitative contract, they may be able to give clients a way to continue working with them through telehealth). That may be why mostly bad ones are left.
Mickey Atkins, a great creator who's a therapist herself, made a video about it and had to take it down because they threatened her with legal action 🙃

Ugh yea this one really bothers me! A podcast I watch has better help as a sponsor every video and then the one creator always talks about her in person therapy sessions so she doesn't even use it herself!
I cringe when creators who criticize companies that treat their workers poorly (which is good that they do that) promote companies that are doing that. One example is HelloFresh, they were in the news during the pandemic for not taking proper steps and later for union busting.

Can't believe you work with a company like Lemonade Third Box.
I ordered from them, and after opening the plastic box, removing the plastic wrap from the plastic cup, the plastic wrap from the sugar, the plastic wrap of the grape and the plastic vacuum seal off the lemonade, I was shocked to find out that it was more like 1/2 a glass!
I wouldn't stand for this kind of waste, so I threw it all away.

General rule is that most advertisers in youtube are borderline scams. They either have poorly made expensive products, they tie you up with monthly fees which are uncessarily difficult to get rid of or they just lie about what they are advertising about.
i enjoy his videos but i can't help but feel disappointed everytime Anthony Padilla does an ad for better help, especially since most of his content revolves around people who've dealt with trauma or mental health issues, only to then turn around and support a company who took advantage of that very demographic.
Yup. Worse than that is when actual healthcare providers do it. Like, it makes the people doing the ad look bad to me and I've found myself watching some people less over it

I mostly ignore sponsored segments - I know UA-camrs need to make money in order to do this full-time, so most of the time, I just think, "Get your bag, pay your bills, etc."

According to Andy Wightman, former Scottish MSP (parilment member) and land rights activist, they ... only actually own 55.7 acres, which they only paid 37k for. So, the mass land ownershop was actually a scam also probably.
Enjoyed Lady of the Library's rant on this in a recent video on myths, and how it's historically and currently problematic, because (tmk; as I have learnt from this) most of the land in Scotland is owned by the King, and so hard for people in Scotland to own land, so these foreign companies coming in and 'selling' land is extra problematic. (which I'm guessing from your comment you know, but adding for others reference)

@@hefoxed This is what annoys me most - land ownership is a HUGE issue in Scotland, but most influencers and creators are just reacting to the title scam part of it. Would be a great opportunity to learn and teach more about a country, but hey ho.

@@stoferb876 It's not always a scam. Royalties are passive in the sense that the work has been competed and doesn't have to be done a gain to receive money. Stock/Shares dividend are also passive.
On the other hand, I got drawn into an MLM scheme, and there was not any passive income there despite the claims. One had to be active to get the rewards.
I'm so glad to hear you mention better help. when they started coming back recently, I thought I was going insane. like, haven't we already dealt with this? and a lot of the times, people in the comments will be praising the creator for their support of mental health. and I'll be wondering if I just imagined the whole better help scandal a few years ago. it's so surreal.
The scandal itself was strange. I didn’t fully comprehend that a mental health company was using profiles of therapists that were no longer on the platform.

Drama and controversy moves so fast online that I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised if the commenters giving praise have either genuinely forgotten or weren’t around when the scandal first broke out. Only a couple of years until something is old news, that’s the age of the internet.

@Tabitha Cakes while unfortunately i don't have any specific recommendations, I will warn you there are other meal kits out there that are also run by hellofresh and seem to try and hide it, so make sure to avoid those
Is this western/usa thing? No offense but as an asian i don't get the appeal of meal kit subscription. Maybe because i live with a lot families so its cheaper to just buy in bulk to local market.
A lot of people in the US live in apartments alone or with roommates who they aren't eating with, so it can be hard to cook for one without food going bad. Also, I think a lot of us weren't raised to learn how to cook much and we feel too busy with work or other things to take the time to both shop and prepare meals
@@kuroroedamame same here as a European lol, when I cook I google the receipt and look up how much of each ingredient I need for 2 people (I cook more even when I'm alone, so I can still eat a portion later or the next day) and get the groceries myself

It's insane that we're seeing more and more ads for them STILL

The "therapy on demand" drama barely registered with me at first, but that's mostly because my mom is a therapist and has been ranting about them for years from a professional standpoint. Like, ethical issues aside, you can't just treat mental health like doordash.
In person is best but I think the concept is good. There are under served areas where there are not local therapist, remote may be the only option. There are many rural and poor areas where u are just not going to find an office
@@ttrev007 Remote service is a great option for people who can't attend in-person sessions, but therapy on demand is a recipe for a horrible experience. That particular idea isn't good even on paper. Professional remote service yes, "on-demand" no.
Honestly I don't think the idea itself is bad - it could be good for people like me who due to being in a toxic family situation I can't freely leave the house or ask for therapy without being yelled at or threatened to "give me a reason to need a therapist", and while I can find some therapists who do online video sessions, my family could definitely hear me talking with them, so I'd much prefer an option that deals with chat, like BetterHelp offers. Unfortunately there are no services like this in my country and I've been at a loss at times. I almost used betterhelp if not the pricing, I'm from a poor country so US pricing was just too much to swallow for my paycheck.
If therapy on demand wasn't a scam, I'd be doing it right now.
If it were actually implemented as it was pitched, that kind of therapy would be ideal for me because they offer text-chat based sessions. I have many issues, but my nuerodevelopmental disorders (autism and adhd) are the main things that need to be addressed and they amplify, counteract, and interact with each other in many nuanced ways
Due to my impulsivity and the sheer amount of masking habits I've been forced to learn in order to survive irl human contact, I am unable to fully organize my thoughts verbally in real time. In person therapy for me is good, but because I almost always end up talking in circles about stuff that doesn't matter or can't get too deep because I'm unable to do that in front of other people at all; it's not nearly as effective as it could be in my specific case if I were to receive counseling on an asynchronous time frame.

I feel like we should inherently distrust ads to be honest. In my experience, even with physical stuff there are a lot of situations where you can get a better product for cheaper than the ones advertised all over the place. Raycons and kamikoto are great examples of that. I often find just searching reviews of those types of products yields much better and cheaper alternatives you never hear about
Kamikoto is owned by the same parent company as the land deed + "lordship" one. Speaking of distrusting I don't trust the late night knife related infomercials. Frying pans however the coatings that are being used for the informercial pans are being improved by better trusted companies. (I think the Kirkland pans are a good example for the able to use metal cooking utensils while being non-stick finish being improved upon)

I've gotten to the point where I'm trying to stop trusting ads from even UA-camrs I trust. Even well intentioned YT creators aren't going to give no biased reviews of their sponsors
The OneClick Podcast did an episode with another youtuber, and they burned bridges by roasting their worst sponsors. It's notva very active podcast so it's the episode just before the most recent one.

Anyone doing a sponsorship for Raycons saying the audio quality is good, they're lying, or if they're not lying, they have no sense of quality and still can't be trusted.
Its a good idea not to trust anybody because even well intentioned people can be fooled or miss something.

I don't expect youtubers to deep dive into every sponsor who contacts them I do however expect it for the ones you plan accept. Idc how much work y'all perceive it to be. People are being scamed and robbed by business being promoted people trust in them because of the person advertising them. Especially with better help it is so dangerous to promote such a bogus app. So unless you don't care about your audience or your reputation it is entirely on you to understand who you are aligning your name too

honestly, if i stopped watching every youtuber that promoted these sponsorships, I'd have no one left to watch LOL. people like to act all moral and such, but as many others have said, ethical consumption doesn't exist, even if you think it does. also i don't think it's fair to _completely_ place this responsibility on creators-you, the consumer, the audience, it's also your responsibility to be skeptical about these sponsorships and do your own research. in fact, I'd say you _should_ inherently distrust these UA-cam ads in general. it's a two way street, even if people like to say otherwise. every time one of these sponsors comes on, i just roll my eyes and continue watching the video. at the end of the day, i would just move on from this. this isn't really worth getting riled up.
@@weissrose1081 There's only like, four you tubers I watch that I don't tune out when they do a sponsorship because they actually make their ads entertaining. Even if I don't buy the product that they're advertising, at least they don't make it seem like a chore.
Fact fiend I feel is the pinnacle of sponsorships. They have a very picky way of choosing sponsors and refuse to do the classic ad read. This is to the point that as far as I know the only returning sponsorship is a guy who sells wool.

But yes it is completely the creator's responsibility to vet the people who they promote. The whole reason they have sponsorship is because of the trust and influence they have over their audience. The reason these companies promote through youtubers is for the personal level they have with their audience. Regardless if people buy because of them or not doesn't negate the fact that it is irresponsible and deceptive to promote shitty companies and scams. People desperate for therapy and help hearing someone they trust talk about a resource isn't going to think "maybe this is a scam and they are pointing me in the direction of a headache" Therapy resources usually aren't like better help no one is expecting to be suspicious of therapist. Bffr. I'm not saying youtubers shouldn't take sponsorships but it's their responsibility to pick good companies (cause if they lie to the youtuber's audience 9/10 the contract with the you tuber is shitty too so everyone's getting screwed). It matters because if this isn't shunned it will become the standard and it will completely change the dynamic of youtubers and audience
The thing about established titles though is that they did run commercials where they said you would legally become a lord or lady. LegalEagle showed them in his video (which is a good listen imo)

I for one did not see any creator say or have the fine print say you can not legally change youre name. Guys like Muta never till they got caught said that it waa a gag. Kind of reminds me when a bully gets caught and goes its just a prank bro. Not a good look and what these youtubrs failed to see is how much it hurt their image. I for one will never trust Muta. For a channel like his who called out scams in the past is kind of a head scratcher.

There are certain scams you can only spot from inside the industry. For me, mattress companies are a big one, not that they're a scam, but they aren't actually a "good deal" and they take advantage of people's general ignorance of the industry

I hate it when youtubers make videos on unethical businesses ans shit, and their biggest sponsor is Hello Fresh, which BTW, is trying to monopolise the business by buying up its competitors. I have a special space in my heart for hello fresh and I hate it.

Why do you think both scam and legit advertisers like going for growing channels? I doubt it's JUST for views. I think they prey on upcoming channels because small creators are more desperate for money sometimes.
Librarian here, this is such a great video to show teens about how UA-cam actually operates (right now) with limitations and an accurate way to show how much that money is in context of things like rent on a moderately successful channel.
How are libraries doing these days? I used to go to them all the time as a kid and I’m sure a lot of people still do, but I imagine they’re kind of going down the same paths as CD stores now that a) books are so easy to order online for free b) films and UA-cam are so popular c) kindles and audiobooks have evolved the medium for a lot of younger people?
@@Evanz111 libraries are more than books and aren’t a business but a public service. They provide meeting places, a shelter from weather, provide information and resources to the community and many offer digital services. You can take a class, find a quiet place to study, get free children’s social time, access materials that can be expensive, offer internet access, get eBooks and some libraries offer voter registration and tax preparation. While the popular image of a library may be “books” that’s just our core!
@@Evanz111 Digital books haven’t knocked out physical books as heavily as you might think. Even for young book lovers, many true book lovers love physical books. Also, you can get free audiobook and ebook rentals through library apps.
Also, physical library books are free and do not take up space as you buy more. Unlike borrowing library books.
There are still financially compromised people (adults and school aged kids) who don’t have the internet at home. Maybe they have a cellphone (cause everyone does and cheap cellphones are far more accessible now). But for some things you need an actual sit down computer. And this is one of many services many find useful at the library.

UA-camrs need to get together and create a list of legit brands/companies to work with and maybe even share reviews of how it was working with the brand or company.
Then there's the grey area, like Raycons. It's a legitimate product, and they don't scam you like certain other companies. However, their product is so low quality that it's kinda like the knife scam. People saying the audio quality is good is just lying. So not a scam, but a low quality product that you shouldn't advertise if you have good morals.

BetterHelp specifically had the assistance of Phil Defranco to have their services shared with other UA-camrs, and then there's the whole impartiality issue where large UA-camrs who have used BetterHelp like Phil and Anthony Padilla have claimed they used the service personally and benefitted from it, whilst likely getting special treatment from a scumbag organisation.
As an illustrator whose trying to be more active on promoting commissions online, but first and foremost someone who studied art history in university, I fully support the idea that creators have responsibility fully for what companies they allow to sponsor the content. Your community trusts you, you have to handle that responsibility incredibly carefully especially if you have a vulnerable audience. That sort of influence should not be taken lightly, especially in a time where parasocial relationships are making up more of folks emotional bandwidth.
I'm curious, how has your background in art history influenced how you think about this responsibility?
@@yuuri9064 This is definitely something I'm going to reply to more once I get done eating supper, but for now my short response is yes. I took in my final year a wonderful Women & Gender in art seminar whose last section focused on what do we do when an iconic artist who is known to be bigoted towards others/abusive towards a spouse/etc is going to have some of their work shown, that helped me better solidify my views.
Their fault for blindly trusting a sponsor like a fool. Like, learn to use your fucking research
I feel like the parasocial issue is a different issue. Creators should be pretty insistent they aren't any one viewer's friend.
If I care about my audience and am willing to take hundreds to thousands of dollars for a 60-second ad, I would definitely feel responsible to research companies who I was making ads for. If you feel responsible for the information you put in your video outside of the sponsorship, for the purpose of doing the best by your audience, why is the sponsorship any different?

With BetterHelp, I'm disappointed when a youtuber accepts the sponsorship. The ''I didn't know'' excuse doesn't work anymore, because it's been years and the comment section of every video sponsored by BH is flooded with people critisizing the company. One of the channels I really like explained that ''they discussed it with the company and after a long conversation, they realized BetterHelp has improved so they will continue accepting sponsorship''. Other channel said that ''well my therapist was excellent, so was my girlfriend's, therefore BH is great'' and I was baffled. Obviously BH will tell youtubers what they want to hear and of course the therapist will treat them well because they're famous and have a fanbase. It's not the same for your average Joe who doesn't have a platform and their opinion won't have the same impact as influencer with millions of followers.
The thing with established titles is, that it does not take a deep dive to find out that it is a scam. It takes at max three google searches.
They wanted easy money. They did not care. And they are fully responsible for there actions. You take the money, you take the blame, too.

Established Titles seems more to be a charity that gives you a title for a gag gift since they partner with a charity that plants trees and so when you purchase a title your “land” is a tree planted “in your name” now it is misleading how creators do their ad read for it not fully explaining how establish titles works but I don’t think it’s a scam per say just like how u can buy a star, buy a piece of the moon, buy a constellation.

@@rejoice37 The charity says on there website that planting a tree costs 1 dollar. The cheapest package (with a digital certificat) costs 50 dollars. They also charge you a monthly fee of 8 dollars for tree planting (again max 1 dollar per tree, some services charge even less) automatically. That's not charity, that is greenwashing.
And they also have/had many ads on facebook where they claim you are legally and officially a lord. They were dishonest from the start.

Distrusting corporations doesn't mean never buying anything ever - it means never assuming they have your best interests at heart. I want a thing and you provide it, and as long as that remains true you get the money. But you're not my friend and I owe you nothing more than the monetary value of the thing I got from you.
My favorite company is Raid Shadow Legends. They were shitty with word for word scripts, but now they've leaned into the fact that they're a joke and are a lot more lenient with their scripts. And creators have gone HARD on the fact that it's such an oversponsered brand, which I love

i agree with a lot of your points, except the idea that as an audience member, i *shouldn’t* be skeptical of all sponsorships. tbh, i’ve seen way more sketchy sponsors, deals and offers that seem way too good to be true than i’ve seen youtube sponsorships of reputable companies. the fact that a lot of the well known companies, like betterhelp or hellofresh, specifically target youtubers that are in their 20s and/or inexperienced with taking sponsors is a HUGE red flag to me, and at this point, i don’t think it’s a good idea to give a chance.
I think people should be skeptical of any advertised product to be honests.
Before youtube sponsorships, there were TV infomercials and radio advertising with catchy songs, and entire pages on popular magazines that promise you a happy marriage if you buy a certain brand of paper towels.
The other thing with Better Help is that it was/is going around taking therapist's personal information and adding them as a listing to their website without the therapists' knowledge. There's a therapist/UA-camr called Mickey Atkins who made a video called "I Guess We're Talking about Better Help Again" which goes over in a lot of detail this major problem with this site and also CareDash since they're basically thing.
On a side note, CallMeKevin has a hilarious video about dealing with the sponsor AppNana and making fun of them for their ridiculous demands with their sponsorship.

The thing with established titles and better help is they've been called out in the past. As soon as I knew about better help back when Gabi Hanna advertising for them. A whole bunch of youtubers apologized. With established titles, I saw a few different youtubers explain that they were dishonest and then not too long after I saw a boom in ads and I tried to warn people who did it but I'm just one person so often my comment was useless. But it really doesn't take extensive research to find video after video article after article discussing how toxic those two companies are in particular

About Lord Me Up!, i can almost guarantee the “officially” was part of their talking points. Not only have they used similar wondering in their own ads in the past, but every youtuber reads essentially the exact same script, including that specific wording.
I def have mixed feelings too. On one hand, as someone who struggles financially I don’t wanna judge others too harshly for taking the opportunity to secure a better income for themselves, especially smaller channels. In the case of betterhelp it’s harder to be sympathetic tho. Something like promoting a crappy mobile game or “becoming a lord” may be a scam, but the stakes are pretty low. Worst case scenario you waste a little money on a dumb scam and it sucks but your life is unchanged. Bad mental health service can have a lasting impact on someone’s health. Having mental illnesses/struggles and needing help puts you in a vulnerable, easily exploited position. As much as I want to give creators the benefit of the doubt, I think when it comes to promoting services related to mental and physical health, they have a way more significant responsibility to do extensive research as compared to like, promoting a tshirt company or whatever.
The problem, to me, is when you could have googled "is Lord me up! legit?" or "does buying a square foot of land make me a lord is Scotland?" For 2 seconds given the nature of the claim.
However you don't, because they are offering you USD 3500 (saw the value in another video).

If UA-camrs and influencers want to make content creation their business, then they have a responsibility to do their due diligence on companies they do agree to do business with. Companies probably think content creators are easy pickings because many of y’all don’t have the resources to demand more transparency and accountability from them before signing a contract, but I’m sure as an industry it could be leveraged with enough solidarity.
I agree somewhat. I think it’s not solely on the creator to be wary of scams. Rather their should be legal repercussions towards the companies that are scams themselves. Let’s not forget that the companies don’t exist in a void.

I’m not demanding perfection from creators in doing their research on potential sponsors, but it is unprofessional and unethical for creators to sign on with a sponsor without doing a reasonable amount of research. If you want to make a living off content creation, then you can’t afford to “not look hard as hard into it” - “it” is part of the very livelihood you’re trying to support.

I’m disappointed in Cinema Therapy for the way they handle sponsorships. They still do ads for BetterHelp, ET and Kamikoto Knives. Zero mention of the controversy. Considering one of the hosts is a therapist, you’d think they’d especially respond better to the whole BetterHelp stuff

i feel like betterhelp is especially predatory towards those who don’t have much experience with therapy. i’m severely mentally ill and have been seeing mental health professionals as long as i can remember, and i don’t have to do any research at all to know that seeing an online psychologist would not be enough to keep me safe. i think other people who don’t have that same experience might not think of that

Some companies also benefit people differently. It may not be bad but just not for you.
To me, it's reasonable to expect a medium-deep amount of research to be done on a sponsor first. It's a contract and business dealing. So even if the sponsorship didn't impact us as viewers, content creators owe it to themselves to be conscientious and read all fine print available.

This is my view of it as well. The products are never good, because good products don't need that kind of advertising. If your product can't be sold with a banner ad or a sticker on a NASCAR, there's probably something wrong with it. NordVPN (who've overhauled their advertising substantially because they got called out before) are among the few sponsors I've seen who legitimately benefit from that kind of ad - nobody knew what a VPN was or what they might want one for until they started doing those ads, because it's just not a product people who weren't deeply invested in internet privacy knew about. But a product like Raid: Shadow Legends? If RSL were a good game, you'd have heard about it before they paid a gaming content creator to promote it, because you're clearly already someone interested in video games if you're watching that content creator.
I do believe that creators *must* research their sponsors as much as they can. The reason sponsored content is paid much more than just an ad that breaks up a video is because the creator is talking in their own voice, directly to the viewer. The trust and authenticity is what's being paid for. How many times have you heard a creator say "you guys know I wouldn't advertise anything to you that I don't actually like and use"? Who wants to bet that at least half of those are like, the first and last time they actually used the product?
I might be in the minority here, but I am very distrustful of any kind of advertising. I bought yt premium just so I don't have to see the prerolls, and I skip through 99% of sponsor sections on any video I watch. Some creators I really like get so creative with their ads and make genuinely funny sketches of them (Evan and Kaitlyn come to mind) but I always feel that creativity is ultimately wasted and insincere because the end goal is profit for someone else.
Yeah, Evan and Katelyn's sponsor sketches are so creative, but it feels wrong/a waste that they spent so much time making an ad for something like raycons :/
As a general rule, I distrust just about any product being advertised in a youtube video.
If it is trustworthy and something that actually interests me, I will hear about it through other means eventually.

i think the best example of a youtuber thoroughly vetting their sponsors is Tom Scott, in his video about how some of the claims VPN companies made in ad reads weren't significant or provable, and where he turned down a sponsorship for that video to avoid compromising on the information he was presenting.
And when he *was* sponsored by Nord, he only talked about his actual, genuine experience, and didn't parrot the whole "it keepz u saef!!!!" bs.

Honestly I had no issue with the UA-camrs that both apologized and were creators that didn't make content on scams and stuff that directly tied to the issues with those brands. I'm not going to name names but the Netflix's series Mune can be a clue. Seriously though it's more disappointing to see that certain channels refuse to engage with their mistakes then them making a mistake. At least those are my feelings on this.
I find it really interesting how demanding Brands are about how they want you to represent their branding with their sponsorship. Considering how much risk a UA-cam creator takes into their OWN hands by taking on a potentially unknown or controversial sponsorship, their OWN brand is more at risk if that company ends up making them look like a fool. I don’t really see many UA-camrs, as controversial as some can be, completely sink a brand with a bad video they did an ad spot in. But should a brand who was reliably sponsoring a video creator end up causing problems, the channel creator ends up screwed and having to do damage control amongst their viewers. That sucks!! One UA-camr I trust a lot recently did a Lord Me Up ad spot and apologized the next day after being dogpiled. That sucks!!!
You made it pretty clear with the preview of your business email that you have a lot of promotions coming in and trying to get through them feels like an uphill climb; some UA-camrs are probably RELIEVED to see a familiar name like Blue Apron or Skillshare in that huge long list because of how many unknown brands are in there. They need to get paid but they also don’t want to lose their audience by accident. This stuff is hard to navigate clearly.
I felt bad when that aforementioned UA-camr got dogpiled for doing a sponsorship with Lord Me Up, to be honest though I feel like most of the people angry at him weren’t upset that he was advertising a potential scam, but more just morally against what Lord Me Up was. Didn’t mesh well with the audience. It did make me uncomfortable a bit when I saw that he had done an Ad spot, but honestly it’s just how it is for UA-cam. Alphabet/google isn’t a search engine, or a video platform, or a GPS map: it’s an advertising company. And as long as Ads keep flowing through their services, anyone who takes part in the Alphabet/Google ecosystem ends up serving those Ads up or consuming them, one way or another.

I think you overestimate how much of a risk UA-camrs take. A majority of people either won't care or will keep watching the creator anyway, even if the sponsor ends up being really crappy.

I don't blame youtubers for taking on sponsorships that aren't great because at the end of the day they need to make money one way or another and vetting brands thoroughly is time consuming on top of the time to do their actual job.
It's too much work to do a Google search? It's too much work to make sure you're not exposing your audience - the people who make it possible for you to have a job - to scams and outright harmful experiences? If you take money from a company, it's your responsibility to make sure it's not a shady one, full stop. Doesn't matter how much "work" it is.

thank you for this video! i always felt really conflicted on fully blaming youtubers for promoting scams because it's obviously very harmful, but i also think it's kind of unrealistic to expect creators to not make mistakes like this especially since adsense is such an unreliable source of profit, 99% of sponsorship emails are even more blatantly scammy than the scams that do end up falling through the cracks, etc. like i can see creators getting desperate and i think that plays a huge role here. it's unreasonable to ignore those larger issues and then wholeheartedly expect this kind of thing to not happen. it's easy for us as audience members to say "just do xyz and it won't happen!" but i think that's sort of overlooking the fact that creators are people too and that there are things that drive their decisions aside from their audience. not saying it's okay, but we need to discuss these things if we ever plan on making it better.
It doesn't help that it just seems that nearly every single sponsor I've seen on this platform have been scummy to some degree. Like, the phrase "Just Google search the company and find out if they're a scam" kinda falls apart when virtually every company has either been a scam, make low quality products or been shitty to their workers. It gets to the point that content creators can't get sponsored by any company. And then content creators have to rely on the ever so inconsistent ad revenue and god forbid if another ad-pocalypse comes around. The prevailing narrative in the comments of "All content creators are evil for taking these sponsors" is a really narrow viewing of the situation that ignores years of background that shows why Sponsors became standard in videos in the first place.

I feel like that "therapy" on demand service is counting on the authenticity of the youtubers or podcaster to build back up their credibility. My other pet peeve is when creators talk about how their own therapy helped them (great!) but obviously that was not through BH. Moreover, with the discount code they financally benefit from their followers poor mental health.... and the creator gets praised in the comments for their vulnerability.
Yea, It's iffy for me too. Truly, selling fake "lord" title for 50 or so bucks is not great thing to do, but I think there is much more potential damage in pushing bad mental health services or bad financial products, NFTs etc. UA-camrs should diffrenciate between the products and do more research if the sponsorship is about thing that could potentially cause big problem to buyer.
Honestly, I think if a creator should be accountable is dependant on what the scam is. If it's something people only found out through long research I don't think the creator is to blame for not doing that research. But literally the first time I saw this "become a lord" ad in a video I thought "funny but I'm 90% sure it's fake and they just make it sound like it makes sense". And if something is that obvious I do believe that it's not too much to ask for a creator to research for an hour what it takes to become a lord in scotland.

I've installed a browser add-on that automatically skips sponsor spots in youtube videos. I realized that more than half of the sponsor spots were for products I knew the youtuber would never use. The amount of fantastic video game critics that do RAID sponsors is crazy. Frankly these sponsors cause me to lose a lot of respect for these youtubers, they are blatantly lying to their audience and convincing the more naive in their audience to buy a product they know is awful. Installing an add on at least lets me live with a cognitive dissonance and enjoy these videos more because I (wrongly) feel I can trust them.
Also for what its worth I do use patreon to support some creators, I don't want to mooch off of others watching the ads and buying things from sponsors. I think financially supporting creators and art is important, and we don't do enough of it in just about any space it exists. I just don't want that money to be coming from people getting manipulated into paying money into crappy mobile games and sports gambling.
I remember when everyone hated when UA-camrs first took sponsorships. They were called, "Shills". It feels like that opinion is coming up again.

There are content creators out there that make research based content, and when they take sponsorships from sketchy brands or companies that have been in trouble for union busting or taking advantage of vulnerable people, it really taints the rest of their work and puts into question whether they actually put that much effort and research in their videos. Lord knows how many creators I've unsubscribed from who advocated for leftist ideas but take sponsorships from Audible (owned by Amazon), Hello Fresh (union busting and worker discrimination), and BetterHelp (sells your patient data to third parties and poor quality service).
My thoughts are, if the company wasn’t outed as a scam before the youtuber was sponsored, then it’s fine, they didn’t know, and a simple tweet or community post explaining why the sponsor isn’t good anymore is fine. But if UA-camrs still promote a business when it has been known they are shifty that’s when my trust in them shifts.
I think what's missing from a lot of this conversation is this: if you are willing to accept that you create UA-cam content as a full-time job, it is your responsibility to manage your income streams. UA-camrs are independent creators and (largely) wish to be treated as such. This means that you are managing where your money comes from, and that it's your responsibility. I see far too many UA-camrs play victim when they advertise something that's KNOWN to be sketchy or predatory because "they're just trying to make it as a creator." That's not an excuse for selling something harmful to your audience. If you accept sponsors as an income stream, it's solely your job to screen them, and it is on you if the company ends up being sketchy because you're the one who accepted the sponsorship in the first place.
I know the appeal to make more money is there, and to some creators they will do this at any cost including cost to their audience. You have to grapple with whether or not you want to behave that way, and face the consequences if you do.

I avoided taking sponsorships because I was always afraid I would end up in a situation like ones described in this video. It can be really tough in times when other money is not coming in.
I am always getting DM on IG for stuff that is clearly scams. I have 113 followers, and they are all family and friends or friends of friends. So, I'm like why did you need me to sell jewelry or clothes. The pages are always from sketchy places. I just block them and forget it.
For the lord/lady thing it is so expensive for such a little piece of land. 50 bucks for one square footage is insane. Even it it was real and is based on a 200 year old it's not worth it. I would rather donate a tree some other way.

I usually find myself to be a savvy consumer, but LordMeUp almost clapped me, I was gonna get it for my parents. Yeah it is a gag gift, but it did make me think that the loophole could make you a "dollar lord" if you will. None of the connections or prestige or peerage, but hey you could sign stuff with Lord if you want, kind of like an honorary doctorate.
Also the environmental factor I felt was quite cute, but yeah that part felt apart after more scrutiny. I feel bad because look, UA-camrs aren't lawyers and can barely afford one, when something is more than obviously a scam (like those brushes a few years back) you should hold them accountable, but these are less obvious if you don't have that expertise.
Here's the thing: the is not a matter of if UA-camrs are responsable for company's action but rather UA-camrs are actively selling things that might harm others (ie scam, lying about affordability of a service and so on)

This just sounded like how people could buy someone their "own star", "tree in the rainforest" or "symbolically adopt an endangered animal" back in the 90's. As far as shady internet "products" it seems fairly harmless, just a one time charge kinda deal. The lord/lady thing seems like something I've seen as an option to use on a credit card without certification though.

Honestly I'm surprised at how poorly written those sponsorship emails you showed were. I don't know if those were just the worst examples, but they almost all felt like scams or some small group with a dream in way over their heads lol

when you promote something you have a duty to research what and who it is exactly you are promoting, otherwise it just sends the message that you see your audience as sheep on who you can make a quick buck and not much more

I've been using an adblocker since starting out with Firefox 2.0 in my early teens (still a Zillian, even got a promo plushie) so I get a heart attack everytime I use something without adblock.
From that perspective sponsorships (that are also easily auto skippable, but the money is already paid to the uploader, so it's no issue vs missed tracked ad impressions) make sense - but man, there's so much trash! And the regular ads are even worse, when I occasionally see them on a different PC, or casting to someone's TV that doesn't have adblock - even with straight up scams and weird sexual anime stuff.
It's honestly gotten to the point where I assume all mainline UA-cam Sponsors are poor quality products compensating with a massive marketing budget
If you get the name out enough, it sticks in people's heads and most will assume it's reputable
My go-to is Raycon Earbuds - They relentlessly sponsor channels, but multiple independent reviewers have said that the product is equivalent to $30 earbuds being sold for $80
it's so nice and refreshing to see how transparent you are, it's also very interesting (to me at least) to see how UA-cam, sponsorships and all that jazz actually work!
