    I lived in the South Melbourne, Middle Park, St Kilda area in the 1970s and 80s. Thanks for the reminder of how nice it was✌️👏

      At sometime maybe the 1960s it was decided that at least the facades of some of the historic buildings in Collins Street should be preserved. Also noteworthy is Clarendon Street from Dorcas to Park Street. I was familiar with that, as it was the nearest shopping centre to my South Melbourne tram depot. On both sides of the road the buildings are noteworthy and well preserved.

      It was a good line to drive and even in the peak hours there were rarely any traffic problems and more importantly, always enough time at the terminus. The opposite was true on the 15 from Saint Kilda Beach to Moreland which was terrible. That was in the days of the W Class. I would also like to wish you a Happy New Year and thanks for watching my videos.

      Yes, adequate for the loadings. I drove it 1988-1994 using Ws and late at night a Z a couple of times.

    Remember the demolition of the rail bridge ran overtime, so people got off the train at Spencer St expecting to get the 96 or 111 to work. These trams went one stop then we all got thrown off and loaded on to buses. I wonder how many of us were late to work that day?

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  7 місяців тому +2

      I don’t know what Railbridge you are talking about, but certainly not the one over Clarendon Street. Trams were blocked at about 6 pm maybe 7 pm on a Friday, and the road was open for all traffic about midday SUNDAY. I know, because I was driving one of the first 96 trams past the worksite. I was so engrossed by the scene, I forgot to turn right onto the light rail reservation and was at least 100m past the junction when I remembered. I quickly changed ends and drove back to the bridge site, changed ends and did the right turn onto the light rail.

      @@tressteleg1 Perfect for me. I don't need to rent a car for the most time. Driving on the left side (we say here on the wrong side😉) is a little bit tricky for us on the continet of europe. And yes i know the little man from Austria with a big mouth (Hilter) changed this in many coutries.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  7 місяців тому

      I drove a little in Germany but a lot more in the US. The tricky part was to do a left turn and NOT stay on the left side of a road. Especially on a motor scooter in Hawaii! In Melbourne I have no need for a car. If public transport does not go there, I don’t need to go there.

    i looked hard for the mannequins at 13:00 but could not see them. can you provide more details. what car is parked out the front, if that might help me. i went to that school at the richardson/ mills st corner for a year. i couldnt see where the cake shop opposite it in mills st used to be. i watched one of your videos of the tram along the old st kilda railway. i was astounded by the amount of native birds i saw. there were only sparrows, starlings and mynahs around there when i was a kid.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  7 місяців тому +1

      Where the video is paused, they are in the extreme right hand side of the screen up on the balcony. But what you can do is use Google Earth and go to the street view of 16 Canterbury Road Middle Park, and you will clearly see them. Or Apple Maps. Similarly look for your cake shop. When were your school days? I drove the 12 and 96 1988 to 1994. Birds don’t seem to be worried by trams coming and going. One year right at the Fraser Street tram stop a bird built a nest on one of the supporting ears of the overhead wire. A rainstorm washed it away before I thought to take a photo.

      I don’t know when they first appeared, but probably noticed them soon after driving in 1988. Originally there was just one, a female,. Recently a passenger told me they had names. You may be able to find something about them on the Internet if you know what question to ask ha ha.

    Why are the stop numbers not in order? Also, what tram line do we pass under at 12:15? Love all the old photos though!

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  7 місяців тому +2

      With tram routes sometimes merging and diverging and maybe meeting up again, the numbers can only follow one direction. So the other direction may suddenly have several numbers missing. I noticed that at the end of Collins Street I think was number 1, but around in Spencer Street somewhat higher. Or numbers may have been following some more important route at the time. Also in recent years, tram stops have been removed here and there and rather than confuse everybody with renumbering, the old stop numbers become gaps in this numbering scheme. It much simpler when a route has a section of track all to itself.

    Pity Parks St tram do not turn right go to luna Park, then turn and go down beaconsfiels pd to Port melb line, what tourist attraction, Any another gr8 vid mate. Pity you dont drive any more!

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  7 місяців тому

      The place to turn right for Port Melbourne would be off the Albert Park Beach siding. You could not justify building another tramline just one block away all the way from Luna Park to that location I just mentioned. The days of building lines just for tourists ended before the last world war.

    • @TheLostProbe
      @TheLostProbe 2 місяці тому

      @@tressteleg1 I think it would be justifiable to extend route 12 to terminate on Acland St, the only new infrastructure that would be needed would be the duplication of the current terminus stop and the addition of another curve onto Fitzroy St from Park St
      apparently it used to turn down Mary St and then down Beaconsfield Pde, and it would then terminate sort of near where the current Jacka Blvd stop is. a few services would terminate at Luna Park but this was uncommon

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  2 місяці тому

      Firstly, I can’t say I have heard any calls for the 12 to be extended. The extra work would be a bit more than you stated, as the current curve into Fitzroy St goes left, not right. In Melbourne, I often eat at the end of Acland St and the current terminus often has a tram in each siding, so having the 12 down there would be too crowded. The old terminus arrangement is how you describe.

    • @TheLostProbe
      @TheLostProbe 2 місяці тому

      @@tressteleg1 I suppose I should've clarified that the new set of curves would indeed need to go right, towards the beach. as for the issue at the terminus, I think it could be solved with some timetable rejigging so that there is always one spot empty for a tram on either route to pull into. but of course, if a disruption occurs then that all goes to shit

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  2 місяці тому

      @TheLostProbe I think the 96 is considered to be Yarra’s prime route, so punctual departures from each terminus are important, and adequate recovery time at each terminus is thus essential. That is why often two 96s are at the terminus at the same time. Any 12s would simply be in the way when 2 96s are there together. Anyway the 12 is a lightly loaded line and not far from the 96 so the number of 12 passengers crossing Fitzroy St to join the 96 to the terminus is not many. A better suggestion was to extend the 96 down Carlisle St towards Elwood but there seems to be little heart for doing that either.
