In 1986, an Armenian exile (Ara Dinkjian) writes a lovely tune of longing, heavily influenced by the folk music of his homeland. A couple of years later, a great Kurdish-Turkish singer (Ahmet Kaya) turns it into one of Turkey's most popular songs ever. A year later, a great Greek singer (Eleftheria Arvanitaki) turns it, with different lyrics, into one of the most beloved Greek songs since. And in the meantime, an Israeli version sung originally by Yoav Itzhak, with lyrics focused on the theme of forgiveness, becomes just as iconic and beloved there. If ever there was an argument about the power of music to cross the arbitrary boundaries that history and politics place on neighboring cultures and peoples, and to start healing the wounds of the violence and hatred that such boundaries bring, this song, and its sibling from the same Dinkjian / Night Ark album Homecoming (aka Sarışın [sung by Sezen Aksu] aka Dinata [also by Eleftheria]), are it.
The first person in the world was an Armenian, and everything in the world belongs to Armenians. What are you sick? Wherever you see, you say it belongs to Armenians. 😄🤭
