I like the parallel of Ruby’s first conversation with Blake when Ruby was telling her that she wanted to be like the hero’s and huntresses that she read about in books, for Blake to say life isn’t like a fairytale. Ruby’s response was “Well that’s why we’re here to make it better. Only for her to utter those same hopeless words that Blake said to her all the way back in the first season when confronted by her past self. It’s heartbreaking to see Ruby’s warm hopeful spirit crumble little by little like this.
And don't forget when she was talking to Jaune and he was down on himself. She responded that he was the leader and if he fails he is bringing the team down with him so he has to give it his all. I am wondering if after they manage to get him back he might be the one to finally be able to help her accept that what happened was not her fault.
The fact that the whole last sequence is a parallel to their conversation in 2x10 while they were camping out at Mountain Glenn and trying to figure out what drives them. And to take it a step further, Ruby’s part was full of callbacks to her conversation with Blake back in 1x03. Really shows how far WBY have come and how far Ruby has been beaten down and repressed. WBY know what they are now, Ruby doesn’t. Honestly, bravo.
The cat asking the question about Ciel is almost certainly a reference to the reactor MurderOfBirds, who is constantly asking whatever happened to her.
I love this episode so much xD - Love Herb from the voice to the look to the "done with all the bull-" attitude xD - LOVE the girl's responses back on their pre-series selves (as pointed out by others to details like Weiss not having her scar). Yang's not feeling like she's missing anything because of her arm; Blake's talking about being herself and her culture; Weiss's entire thing is just chef's kiss. - Also Ruby's really lays out the weight that's been on her shoulders the whole time.
Robbie Daymond as the Cat has gotta be one of my favorite parts of this season so far; mainly because the other role I know him from is so incredibly different and both performances are amazing.
I'm getting Babylon 5 vibes from this volume. A whole lot of "Who are you?" and "What do you want?" of the existential variety. Ruby is the only one who hasn't had to already deal with the specific question their past selves asked them. It's interesting that the other three get a challenge to their identity that they've already dealt with. This implies that while the events in Atlas may have hurt them, it didn't make them question who they are or what they're doing.
I love everything about that scene in the smoke. The callbacks to their time at beacon, of course, but also the writing of them asserting who they are always brings tears to my eyes ("A simple life wouldn't be my life" resonates with me very strongly). I also love how the models of their V1-3 appearances aren't just the old outfits on their current models, but actually look younger and closer to the old Poser models, and the body language is completely different. Huge props to the VAs, too, because the way they deliver their lines is different between the two, and it all comes together to show how much the characters have changed and grown. And Lindsay managed to make upbeat eternally-optimistic Ruby sound sinister and condescending at the same time. Everything about that scene is absolutely phenomenal. It's one of my favorite scenes in the whole show.
I love the return of Witty Weiss "Losing their head" was more like losing their mind. Ruby is not in a good "head space" if you know what I mean. I need to get on the patreon.

First, an important point everyone might be glossing over: Blake has known every character in the story up until now, or at least who they should be (red king is red prince). She is out of her element in this episode and is very nervous, because the caterpillar is NEW. She did not name him, and stayed wary of him throughout this episode (though everyone was, to be fair). So this occurred to me while watching (and since people have mentioned the possibility that Jaune somehow landed first in prior video comments, personally I think he just landed elsewhere), Jaune has never felt he's fully developed into the hero he wanted to be, like his forefathers and ancestors. The Caterpillar's spirit journey spell I believe allows you to come to terms with what you are, and become who you want to be, a la metamorphosis. The reason we haven't seen Jaune yet is because he's undergoing his necessary changes off-camera, so to speak... He was already here. The Caterpillar may not have put together that a huntsman and a huntress are the same thing due to gender, but he did acknowledge needing to go to the tree, and that everyone needs help. Perhaps this is how Jaune could 'be' the rusted knight. His weaponry choice has always made him seem like a hero of old... He may don the Knight's armor as the knight is far too old now, maybe as a further means to protect himself since his sword is broken... Or perhaps to disguise himself in this world of nonsense. We won't know for sure until we see what happens, but we know that Weiss' description of the Rusted Knight being handsome will be thrown off completely when she finds Jaune underneath the helmet.
It think its way too obvious that we are supposed to think Juane is the Rusted Knight. Im feeling like his armour is a red herring and instead the Knight will play a similar role to the smoke mirages, confonting Juane and mirroring what he believes he should be.

The answer back then was because she already knew all those things - she knew exactly who she wanted to be. But now with everything that’s happened it feels like they’ve switched places - all of team RWBY know what they are as huntresses ACCEPT Ruby?? BRO MY HEART

I suspect it's more like the cat is the steward of Ever After (which is why he can come and go from the tree as desired, etc.), and when a person can no longer fulfill their "Proper Function" they need to be changed into something/someone else who can. Thus, the Red King couldn't win against Alix, and had to be changed-into the Red Prince. (They never said he was dead, just that he was gone.) And now that the Red Prince couldn't fulfill his function, HE has to be changed into something else. And now the same with Herb: he can't fulfill his function with Ruby, so he has to be changed as well. And the cat is the one who makes these things happen... somehow. "We all change when it's our time... don't you?"

Part of me wants to see Ruby lose her mind and become a dark or berserk version of herself. Ruby is the only one who hasn't had to face direct challenges. Blake had to face her past and everything in it, Yang had to face coping with loss and humiliating defeat and her fear of failing, Weiss had to face herself and become better than who she was. Ruby has had the least growth and that's why she's not as strong as the other 3 in this chapter. I hope this Volume is her finding her own inner strength as the other 3 have.
It is not that Ruby has not faced the darkness of the events around her, she just keeps it inside. When she does loose it all the trauma comes out at once like when she witnessed Pyrhaa and Penny's deaths and recently when the news of human Penny dieing was revealed. At some point she will break, when she recovers she will be stronger but it will be a hard fall.
I dont think Cat is controlling fate per se. He said "Take a piece of my heart" to Herb, and "It must hurt your heart, let me help" to the Prince. Seeing as he is the only creature who willingly travels between the acres (other than little and the Jabberwock, which has interesting implications of its own), and Herb said "How a king becomes a prince", I think the Ever After is dying or regressing in some way. The inhabitants are losing their heart and becomeing cynical and bitter. The Prince "was put on the acre" to play games, but he cheats and quits when he isnt winning. Herb "Helps others on their journeys", but sows doubt in their minds about their real purpose. I think Cat is trying to help the inhabitants of the Ever After, literally giving pieces of himself to help them, even putting himself in the line of fire between Herb and Ruby to defend her. I think ulike the Chechire Cat, whos purpose was to be chaotic, Curious Cat's purpose is to bring harmony, to basically be a living memoir of the Ever After, always learning and helping others stay true to their purposes if they've forgotten.
Now that you mention it I do believe Ruby was the only once who didnt seriously reflect on her reason for wanting to be a huntress she just kind of said an answer and kept going I guess now she is being forced to think about it after all the trauma instead of before like the rest so she has to find her "why"

I love the episode and it's implications, if the volume 1 versions of the characters said stuff that made sense to say to the present characters. Other then that Ruby's part in this section is beautiful, and I really love the herbalist and how he is trying to help them but all of them are in a negative mental state. So he tries the leaves method.

Ever since the first episode that characters in this world tend to reffer to their existence as a purpose or a way of being. So their existence is not defined by their soul, but by their role? It's interesting that the herbalist said that he was THE herbalist, which leads to believe there is no other being with that role, but only "until he's not anymore". Are the beings repurposed in this world? The acid trip that the herbalist performed, was that an incantation of actual, physical and destiny change? Do all the unsatisfied beings from this realm undergo this ritual to be converted to something else? Is that... what happened to the king? Maybe he visited the herbalist, and was tired of being adult, and asked to change to a child version of himself. The cat seems to appeal to maintain the order in the acres. He stopped the king from going out of his purpose, which was to play his game and win at any cost (as the cat reffered "the one purpose you were put on this acre to do"). And now, he appeals to the herbalist to go back to his actual purpose of helping travelers and beings in the realm... The cat sure is the wild card in my analysis atm. Great reaction as always btw, not many ppl pick up on the fact that the girls moment with their past selves is a complete mirrored situation of Oobleck's inquiry during Mount Gen's "intership". You should react to the Toaru series op 1-15 it's like the MCU of anime with characters bridging in between each other's intros and is a really funny and action packed series to watch plus the openings are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING music-wise.
Whenever they want to hurt Ruby's feelings they throw a Yo Mama at this poor girl And I feel so bad for laughing every time they do Also I think I know the symbolism of the butterfly. You said it yourself, they symbolize change. And in this land, it's implied that when something dies, they don't necessarily die in the traditional sense, but they change instead. And with the cat continuously giving pieces of himself (his heart), and the cat chasing after the butterfly symbolizing change, I think by the end of this the cat is going to die/change after giving up too much of himself. So yeah, I think we'll lose the cat too. And I don't think we've seen the last of Ruby's identity crisis, as seen in the trailers.

And I know that my mental illnesses poison a majority of my thoughts, even when my medications are at their therapeutic levels. I pray for my demise constantly, but refuse to take an active role in such an event. Besides, I have helped to guide other diabetics to take better care of themselves. His ability to give part of his heart to sooth others makes me think of how Oz gave some of his magic to the maidens, Qrow and Raven.
The guard in Chapter 3 said "Your kind" in reference to humans were responsible for what happened to the King so I doubt it was the cat.

Part of me wants to see Ruby lose her mind and become a dark or berserk version of herself. Ruby is the only one who hasn't had to face direct challenges. Blake had to face her past and everything in it, Yang had to face coping with loss and humiliating defeat and her fear of failing, Weiss had to face herself and become better than who she was. Ruby has had the least growth and that's why she's not as strong as the other 3 in this chapter. I hope this Volume is her finding her own inner strength as the other 3 have.

It is not that Ruby has not faced the darkness of the events around her, she just keeps it inside. When she does loose it all the trauma comes out at once like when she witnessed Pyrhaa and Penny's deaths and recently when the news of human Penny dieing was revealed. At some point she will break, when she recovers she will be stronger but it will be a hard fall.

I dont think Cat is controlling fate per se. He said "Take a piece of my heart" to Herb, and "It must hurt your heart, let me help" to the Prince. Seeing as he is the only creature who willingly travels between the acres (other than little and the Jabberwock, which has interesting implications of its own), and Herb said "How a king becomes a prince", I think the Ever After is dying or regressing in some way. The inhabitants are losing their heart and becomeing cynical and bitter. The Prince "was put on the acre" to play games, but he cheats and quits when he isnt winning. Herb "Helps others on their journeys", but sows doubt in their minds about their real purpose. I think Cat is trying to help the inhabitants of the Ever After, literally giving pieces of himself to help them, even putting himself in the line of fire between Herb and Ruby to defend her. I think ulike the Chechire Cat, whos purpose was to be chaotic, Curious Cat's purpose is to bring harmony, to basically be a living memoir of the Ever After, always learning and helping others stay true to their purposes if they've forgotten.

I love the episode and it's implications, if the volume 1 versions of the characters said stuff that made sense to say to the present characters. Other then that Ruby's part in this section is beautiful, and I really love the herbalist and how he is trying to help them but all of them are in a negative mental state. So he tries the leaves method.
The cat being a meta commentary stand in for the audience is hilarious

Ever since the first episode that characters in this world tend to reffer to their existence as a purpose or a way of being. So their existence is not defined by their soul, but by their role?
It's interesting that the herbalist said that he was THE herbalist, which leads to believe there is no other being with that role, but only "until he's not anymore". Are the beings repurposed in this world? The acid trip that the herbalist performed, was that an incantation of actual, physical and destiny change? Do all the unsatisfied beings from this realm undergo this ritual to be converted to something else?
Is that... what happened to the king? Maybe he visited the herbalist, and was tired of being adult, and asked to change to a child version of himself.
The cat seems to appeal to maintain the order in the acres. He stopped the king from going out of his purpose, which was to play his game and win at any cost (as the cat reffered "the one purpose you were put on this acre to do"). And now, he appeals to the herbalist to go back to his actual purpose of helping travelers and beings in the realm... The cat sure is the wild card in my analysis atm.

Also I think I know the symbolism of the butterfly. You said it yourself, they symbolize change. And in this land, it's implied that when something dies, they don't necessarily die in the traditional sense, but they change instead. And with the cat continuously giving pieces of himself (his heart), and the cat chasing after the butterfly symbolizing change, I think by the end of this the cat is going to die/change after giving up too much of himself. So yeah, I think we'll lose the cat too.
And I don't think we've seen the last of Ruby's identity crisis, as seen in the trailers.

Not the kind with depression woven in or rose-colored optimism that also taints reality. Seeing your true self is hard, and sometimes extremely painful.
I am a 55-year-old man who’s been a Type 1 diabetic since the age of seven. 56 is looming large on the horizon, and I am sorely disappointed with my life thus far. I’ve been engaged to be married three times, with all of those relationships crumbling. I’ve sired no children, much to my regret. Not only do I suffer with the complications of diabetes, but I also have severe recurrent depression and post traumatic stress disorder, (more commonly known as PTSD).
But these things aren’t what I am. They are pieces of the person I’ve become. Some of it’s very good. Some of it’s very bad. And I know that my mental illnesses poison a majority of my thoughts, even when my medications are at their therapeutic levels. I pray for my demise constantly, but refuse to take an active role in such an event. Besides, I have helped to guide other diabetics to take better care of themselves. And certain people - like Ghost - find my sense of humor entertaining.
Is all of this TRUE self-reflection? Because my opinion is completely biased, I can’t answer that. But is it an ATTEMPT at true self-reflection? Yes. And I will continue to try until I feel that I have my answers, or that the answers can never be obtained.
