  • For Corpus Christi / Pentecost 2
‘Tantum ergo sacramentum’ (Therefore, the great Sacrament let us reverence) marks the start of the last two verses of the medieval Latin hymn ‘Pange lingua’ (Sing, my tongue, the mystery of the glorious Body), attributed to St Thomas Aquinas and written for the feast of Corpus Christi. The first of these two settings was written by César Franck for bass soloist, choir and organ in 1865; the second was composed by fellow Parisian organist/composer Louis Vierne in 1891, scored for soloist or choir. Both settings convey the reverence of the text, but in contrasting musical language. Both are arranged by myself for solo organ in this performance.
