Great to see this, my uncle, deceased, flew with the Royal Canadian Air Force from here and met my auntie. The runway was where my dad took me as a sixteen year old to drive his car for the first time. Thank you for posting.

My Grandfather was the 'F.W.B' who had the sign commisioned that you show in the start of your video. He served at Waltham and used to tell me stories about the war and the bomber crews and some of the terribly sad things that happened. Thank you for sharing this.

Brilliant video. My Grandad was based at Waltham in 1944. They wrecked their first aircraft hitting a barn at the north end of the airfield (just out of shot in the video @4:10). They were subsequently shot down over France in a raid on the Vierzon Railyards. My Grandad survived and was taken PoW, but the Mid-Upper Gunner was killed. I visited Waltham in 2015. Very moving. Many thanks for this video. A great tribute.

The only time I have ever driven a car was on that runway, about 25 years ago. My friend, whose car it was, has since died. All things considered, it was lucky that we didn't both die in that car, all those years ago. Good memories, although I don't think he enjoyed the experience much - telling me afterwards that I would never be allowed to drive that car again! And I never did.

Hey. It is a fantastic place. Better seeing it from the air. No permission required, just common sense flying lol.

This could have been Humberside airport instead of Kirmington air base becoming so after the RAF vacated the site and Grimsby Borough Council were approached by the Government at the time to allow this to happen.
But as usual and a trend that continues to the present day the short sited councillors voted for this not to happen as they didn’t want it in their backyard so that great opportunity was lost for ever to a growing population with an airport which would have attracted even more industry to the town that time has forgot.
