    Very informative Chris, and Beats trawling through the manual , and as they say, pictures are worth a thousand words , for those that just happen to come across this article by chance and who are contemplating a move over to E-bikes or about to get a newer model , for sure the Rohloff E-14 gear hub is in a class of its own, i have used Rohloff hubs for years when long distance touring and was so glad when i switched to E-bikes to have come across the advanced E-14 , and the smooth and effortless speed in which it changes up or down when negotiating big hills with a fully loaded R&M Supercharger GX

      I have owned two previous bicycles with the Rohloff hub. The pinion is so much better because it is easier to change the rear wheel. I see that the newer SuperCharger 2 has the pinion gears. In my opinion, this is the perfect setup with a carbon belt especially while touring.

    Excellent video! I learned a lot about my new Rohloff E14 hub and how to resolve many common problems. Unfortunately, after having completed all of the steps you mentioned, I still have a problem, (I think it's a problem), that wasn't covered. Specifically, I've noticed that while riding under load, in 8th gear, the hub makes a grinding, or chattering sound. I'm aware of the 7/8 gear shifting issue, but this is different. This noise occurs continuously, only while riding in 8th gear, under a moderate to heavy load (say anything over 200-250 watts). The higher the load, the greater the noise. I'm trying to figure out if this normal, or something that requires service. I've done a lot of on-line searching and talked to several shop mechanics, but no one seems to have a clear answer. A couple people I've talked to mention that they've heard of this happening, but never experienced it themselves, or were certain what caused it. I don't want to damage the hub, or worse find myself stranded far from home! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

      @@holyfox94 Well, it happen, and had to change the tires very easily replaced. Turn the bike upside down. When the tension is removed off the belt when you remove the wheel there is a good chance one of the hooks on the spring tension will come out of one of the holes, something your not looking for. This is the exterior spring beside your foot. Look at how the spring is installed before removing the wheel. Spring is very stiff. When you put the wheel back on it looks as if everything is good, but there is no tension on that belt. There is a youtube video showing you how to remove and reinstall.

    We love our Rohloff E-14's. I do calibrate the shifting occasionally. I do notice after calibration, it can take 10 or 15 minutes for the bike to be able to boot up again.
    I'm currently at 2,500 miles on my Rohloff and the next maintenance is an oil change, at 3,000 miles. I've done that on an Alfine 11-speed before, and it was not too hard. I'll look forward to a video on the Rohloff hub oil change.

    At times, my SuperCharger2 power to the motor does not activate. I find that if I turn off the controller and turn it back on, power is restored to the motor. What causes this error? For example, I am riding my e-bike without any power to the motor when I am riding on level ground. When I go to turn on the motor, I do not receive any power to the motor to help me up hills. This can be somewhat annoying since I have to stop, turn off, and then turn on the controller. I purchased my SuperCharger 2 from Propel.
    BTW, this is a great instructional video. I hope that many more will follow. I have ridden my SuperCharger 2 for about 3,000 miles now. I like long tours on it. My style of riding my e-bike is to use the power only when necessary. Thus, depending on the terrain, I can ride about 150 miles on dual batteries. What a wonderful e-bike! And now, they have the pinion gears too!!!!!

    Any suggestions for an E-14 that seems to take its time when down-shifting? Maybe it's coming from a 500/14 where I could get from 14 to 4 in less than half a second, when the electronic shifter seems to take half a second per gear, maybe more, it's super annoying. Going up the range seems quicker, but it could be because I usually have less of a need to get from 4 to 14 in a hurry, whereas if a motorist waves you through a junction and you're there waiting for your bike to shift into a gear you can use, you look a bit of a plonker. Also, it does like to get stuck in the special 14th gear that exists between some shifts. I know the manual version also did that, but this one, with its slow down-shifts, seems particularly keen to do that at inopportune moments.

    Hi Chris,
    I was climbing a steep hill the other day under a high load and changed down the gears - I thought I'd given the hub it's 'breathing space' at the top of the pedal revolution but on putting power back through the pedals it felt like the hub was 'slipping' gears. This carried on in all gears and only stopped when I reduced power through the pedals considerably. I tried the recalibration option and checked the tightness of the axle, however I am still getting the gear slip (a loud clunk sound and it definitely feels like it's 'missed' for a split second). If I don't put too much power through the pedals and stay in Eco mode it is fine, but the moment I go to Sport or Turbo and put any kind of power through the pedals, in just about any gear, it 'slips' with the same loud clunk and the feeling that it's missed or jumped a gear - and it keeps doing that (so it doesn't settle down after the first 'clunk'). Is there anything else I can try - I'm on a Supercharger 2 and have only got about 250 miles on it....many thanks, Bruce

      These hubs have a learning curve and all the non Ebike reviews said DON"T shift under load. Sounds like the Electronics shifted and the gears didn't. MAYBE YOUR HUB IS TO TIGHT.

    • @TheBrucehetherington
      @TheBrucehetherington 4 роки тому +1

      @@briananderson6142 Thanks Brian - Chris actually got back to me directly and I did both things - took a bit of pressure off the hub and got the tension of the belt right using the Gates Carbon Drive app and since then the gears have been working smoothly, even when I'm putting a lot of pressure through them with heavy loads (though I am still super careful about changing down with a heavy load - try and work out in advance of the hill what gear is going to be best). It's been a real learning curve moving from old derailer pedal bike to Rohloff ebike - particularly as regards riding style. I found with the ebike if I'm not careful I get the cadence wrong and too much power ends up going through my knees! Have had to adjust the way I ride with the pedelec assist to make sure I'm looking after my own joints! That said, I'd never go back. Have done almost a thousand miles on the bike now on the forest trails around where I live, and being able to go anywhere and for as long as I like is a total game changer. On Sundays I ride with friends on their road bikes and by and large I can stay with them, certainly we complete our 'circuit' (about 25 miles on tar) in the same amount of time, so the bike is improving my social life too (I never used to be able to stay anywhere near the roadies on my mtb).

    Hi Chris. Love your work, as always. I’m just wondering: how often do these issues come up in daily use? As for video suggestions, could you do some overviews of what it’s like actually living with each drivetrain option available on the Riese & Müller bikes (e.g., when riding faster than the assistance limit, or getting home if power runs out, etc.), and maybe a final overview of the three options side-by-side (e.g., differences in their rates of battery drain)? I’m curious because I live in a sprawling city near both mountains and the coast, so I have fairly long commutes through hills and into head winds (hence my interest in getting an e-bike). I also tend to ride my non-electric bike faster than the 25km/h (approx. 15mi/h) limit for e-bikes here in Australia, making drivetrain drag a concern. I’m currently leaning towards the internal hub gears with belt drives due to their promise of lower maintenance requirements; the Rohloff is appealing because of its supposedly lower drag and wider gear range, while the Enviolo offers the reassurance of being able to shift even if the battery dies en-route. Then there’s the higher-maintenance but trusty and user-repairable touring setup... oh the questions that could be answered if I had access to some Load 60s with each of the three options. Just some suggestions for videos while we’re all locked down. Thanks for the the great content, and keep safe.

      Hi Arne, agree that'd be a great video to do that drive-train comparison Chris :-). In the meantime, this might be a good resource: www.cyclingabout.com/drivetrain-efficiency-difference-speed-between-1x-2x/ From our own riding experience (on the Load as well as other R&M e-bikes) the difference in drag between Rohloff and Enviolo is noticeable, and the Rohloff being quite close to derailleur gears, although the belt adds a little extra resistance compared to a (new/clean) chain. The durability though is unrivalled and so convenient. If you are in Melbourne we do have Load vario and rohloff models to test by appointment.

    • @arnesoderstrom
      @arnesoderstrom 4 роки тому +1

      E-stralian thanks, interesting article. Not sure how the Gates carbon belt compares with those setups though, since it tracks straight between front and rear cogs with no lateral deviation. That said, I suppose there must be at least some efficiency losses arising from the nifty guide/tensioner that allows the belt drive to work with the Load’s rear suspension, but am guessing that any such contribution to drivetrain drag would likely be overshadowed by internal friction within the competing hub gear options(?). Thanks for the heads-up about the variants you have available, and for sharing insights from your experiences with them! I’ll definitely book in for some test rides of both the Vario and Rohloff Loads when that becomes possible again. In the meantime, please buckle down and keep safe everyone.

    • @sparque_au
      @sparque_au 4 роки тому

      @@arnesoderstrom yes the additional bends due to the tensioner add a bit more friction to the belt set up, although we've never measured how much. With a chain the friction is dependent on the state of cleanliness of the chain as well as its wear, whereas the friction for the belt is pretty much constant.
      We're still open for business and test rides by appointment at the moment until further notice.

    • @Propelbikes

      It could happen because the rider shifted under a very high load like climbing a large hill in a high gear. It’s not often, but it can happen and it’s simple to resolve.
      I don’t feel they are particularly prone to problems. I think the main thing is to shift it under an extreme load of you can avoid it. Outside of that it’s pretty bulletproof.

      I've only run out of battery a couple of times on my R&M to the point that the motor stops assisting. I think it's about 5% capacity at that point. With 5%, that's still thousands of gear shifts and quite a long time with the lights operating before the battery is dead. Also, at that point, you're unlikely to be shifting into a high gear because you're dragging a 35kg lump of an e-bike with no motor assistance.

Why would Rohloff (undoubtedly the best in Internal Gear Hubs) limit it's self to such a small portion of the ebike market.. Bosch is very expensive for the power / range they offer.. No serious ebiker would go with their system because it lacks torque and range.. So disappointed with Rohloff making the decision to limit it's place in the high end Ebike market..
