96 Was the best year of gen 5. It had OBD2 first year it came out. I have a 96 5.0 and 5 speed . 4 inch lift done right. New leaf springs no blocks. Cut and turned D44 with coil overs in the front. Extended radius arms, brake lines etc.
Very nice. Interior is better than mine. I think I have aftermarket door panels. And possibly an aftermarket dash. They don't fit quite perfectly but look nice. Anyways, get a soft top and wider wheels, or space the wheels out to the fenders and rock n' roll. If you remove the center cup holder bin, a JL AUDIO HO 12W6 box fits perfectly between the front seats. Aim it forward and it will be the best sounding bass you've ever heard. I had the box re-covered to match the seats, and bonus it also acts as a table and/or wider armrest. The top of the box is level with the armrests and just wedges between them.
The pre emission ones before 96 are where it’s at. 95 is great. 5.8 with the e40d is a pretty good combo. Has decent power, nothing crazy but enough. The engine;phenomenal. The transmission.. well sometimes you get a good one, sometimes you get a bad one. They aren’t too rocket science to change. Not easy but not too difficult. everything on the truck is replaceable, if it’s not destroyed by rust anyways. Great trucks. They can take a real beating

I have a 96... didn't like the new ones at first, but now I am thinking about getting a new full-size one... though TBH, the Bronco Sport sucks.
